What's the double kitchen all about?

DoubleKitchenMan · 12/04/2023 20:23

Name changed because this is clearly identifiable to my friend who I'm puzzling over this with but WTH is going on with the second kitchen???

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/133529630

I know some cultures where spices are heavily used have spice kitchens but they don't kit them out like a whole second kitchen! Do they?

And the description says

The current owners have recently converted the garage to provide a second kitchen which the agents consider could easily be converted for a variety of uses if required. But why did they convert it to a second kitchen? And then move!

Think I thought I'd seen all the pics when I got to the back garden!

CrystalCoco · 12/04/2023 20:56

This would be my ideal house, separate kitchen for DH to make an unholy mess in and I wouldn't have to see it / be bothered by it.

I thought this at first, and looking at the floor plan you could easily turn that side of the ground floor into a granny flat. But there’s only one bathroom in the house. I’d have thought most people would put in an extra bathroom before an extra kitchen.

There’s actually two bathrooms - family bathroom and an en-suite next to it.

DoubleKitchenMan · 12/04/2023 20:58

DoubleKitchenMansMate · 12/04/2023 20:33

See, I thought this but the rest of the house really doesn’t seem set up for it

Also 👋 😁

The kitchen in the garage may well be for smelly cooking as the other one is in an open plan area. I read it was an increasing trend in the UK. Other cultures have this as standard but they would have staff in the second kitchen and one for the owner with show off appliances etc. A severe allergy would also be easier to handle this way, the allergen to be kept to the garage kitchen, there is a table in there to eat it as well.

WillowintheUK · 12/04/2023 20:59

And I just spotted a downstairs toilet!

xnyl · 12/04/2023 20:59

A baking business?

DoubleKitchenMan · 12/04/2023 21:03

I hadn't thought about kosher so I would love to learn more about how that influences house layout/design/kitchens.

My first thought was annex but as a committed Rightmove fan the layout just isn't typical for that.

Catering business is also a good shout but I'd expect more gadgets on the surfaces. Or maybe they're better at hiding their kitchen crap than me!

It's odd that it was put in as their most recent kitchen, having done the big open plan extension kitchen. Still curious!

Very common is larger sub continent families (I am from Pakistan heritage). The cooking tends to have stronger smells so open plan doesn't work too well.
So the back kitchens or desi kitchens are used for the main cooking and the big kitchen for lighter duties such as baking and for display!!

neonjumper · 12/04/2023 21:11

I thought kosher kitchen .

For preparation of foods as certain combinations of food are not mixed or eaten together .

Quite common to have separate sets of cutlery /plates for eating and prep of foods/meals .

Quite common in a number of kosher homes but maybe not so big as this one .

dreamersdown · 12/04/2023 20:51

Keeping Kosher is one thing, but cleaning for Passover is a whole other thing! The cleaning rules are so stringent that many of us DREAM of having a separate kitchen to just open up and use at Passover.

Ah, thanks @dreamersdown - that's interesting. I do remember Jewish neighbours cleaning for Passover, but didn't realise it was so tricky.

YunaBalloon · 12/04/2023 21:16

I'd assumed kosher kitchen, but those who go to the expense of having a second kitchen usually have other signs that they're Jewish about the place - for example lights on timers, the Torah and Jewish law books displayed, mezuzah etc and I don't see any of it. So I think granny flat is more likely.

BelindaMelinda · 12/04/2023 21:22

I thought Social Media chef.

There's one I follow who did a behind the scenes video and they'd done a garage conversion to a full second kitchen. Just kind of like a home office I suppose, if your work is anything to do with cooking or food.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 12/04/2023 20:45

Apologies if this is an insensitive question, but why do you need a separate Kosher kitchen? If you keep Kosher, don't you do it all the time? I know you use separate dishes during Passover, but wouldn't you have to do that anyway, whether you were using the same kitchen or a different one?

Orthodox Jews lucky enough to have a second kitchen will have one for meat and one for milk, as to keep kosher milk and meat shouldn't be consumed together - there should be a 6 (I think) hour gap between the two. And if there isn't a second kitchen, most Jews that keep Kosher will user separate bowls, pans, utensils, plates, cutlery, storage containers and where possible sinks, ovens and fridges for meat and milk. Like with most religions, there's a spectrum of how Kosher a person keeps - for some it's simply not eating non-kosher meat and seafood, for other it's more strict.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 12/04/2023 21:27

I was going to suggest that it might be an Asian thing. DH's family who live in the far East all have a wet kitchen and a dry kitchen. The wet kitchen is outdoors and under cover and used for anything messy or smelly. It's too cold here to have an outside wet kitchen but I guess you could have a room set up for messy cooking plus a regular kitchen that is more open plan to your living area.

Showing my age and interests to confess this never crossed my mind! But it's white and shiny so a strong possibility!

My first husband was first generation Canadian Italian (I say this because I don’t know it’s an Italian living in Italy thing) but his family, immediate family and other Italians I knew, all had second kitchens. Usually in the basements. The ground floor kitchen was the ‘show’ kitchen, whilst the downstairs kitchen was where the cannolis, lasagne and sauces were made. They also had cellars where wine was aging and meat covered in salt was hanging.

It was all very normal to have mama run up the stairs with a steaming tray of lasagne 🤷‍♀️. The show kitchen was for making coffee and serving biscottis. It’s a mad world.

Dd had a friend who built a house and put two kitchens in (Pakistani family). Was a beautiful house.

sst1234 · 12/04/2023 22:03

Isn’t it obvious? It’s a dirty kitchen.

Look it up. They are becoming more and more common because of open plan living.

RedEyeBaby · 12/04/2023 22:10

They read that a kitchen adds thousands to the value of your home. The house probably also has another bathroom in the attic.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/04/2023 22:13

A kosher kitchen
A House of Multiple Occupation
A business kitchen

Tryingtokeepgoing · 12/04/2023 22:17

Wasn’t it the second kitchen that put the kibosh of Ed Miliband’s career? So the house is at least unlikely to be a politicians 😂

CuteCillian · 12/04/2023 22:19

"A work-in pantry, or “prep kitchen,” is a second, usually smaller kitchen that's hidden away around the corner from or behind the main kitchen. This second kitchen is sometimes called a “butler's pantry.” The main kitchen has cupboards, counters, a sink and all or most of the major kitchen appliances."
This is very common in palatial homes, then you can give the impression of laid back open plan entertaining.

gluenotsoup · 12/04/2023 22:20

Random… maybe they had separated but still living in the same house for whatever reason and it was a way of living separate lives under one roof ?

bluebeardswife7 · 12/04/2023 22:30

It would be awesome if the homeowners found this thread and filled us in.
