Extendable dining table for around £1k

Just had a bit of a disappointing look for a extendable table. I recently came into a bit of money and our dining table and chairs are falling to pieces. Looking to pay 800-1000 for table, 1-1.2k for 4-6 chairs.

John Lewis seemed to have stuff that fit the bill and there is one that might be a goer but it's not in stock right now and the extra leaves can't be stored under it so there's nowhere super convenient to put them. Others either didn't seem to be very sturdy extended and one had review that suggested the surface scratched easily, which is not good for us as a household!

Looking for a well-made 6-8 or ideally 6-10 table, at least wood-finished (so not mdf looking) for around the 1k mark, we prefer a simple or scandi style (not farmhouse or shiny), but I'm not sure where other than JL we should be looking at that price bracket, so would welcome any suggestions. Has to be somewhere with a physical shop, I don't think DH would be happy to order anything we can't see physically and he's probably right.

Have a look at second hand. There's some good quality stuff out there.

My Mum.has got a nice extending table from M&S.

We have an Oak table that we bought from somewhere like Furniture Village in a sale, I know people sneer at them but our table is 10 years old, used daily and looks as good as new.

Yeah, think I looked at M&S and wasn't anything quite right. I've seen one potential at Next and another at West Elm, where we might go tomorrow.

I've asked to be emailed when the John Lewis one comes back in stock as would probably get it if we haven't seen anything else by the time it's available, but want to look over long weekend in case of special offers.

What about searching for a specific style/maker? eg. Mouse man, or Ercol,

JimmyJimmyJimmy · 07/04/2023 18:51

We have this one

I’d look at IKEA. You’d be able to see them prior to purchase. I have a lovely one from IKEA, very simple but not extendable, and when we’re able to replace it with a bigger extendable one IKEA is probably the first place I’d look. We’ve had our current one 15 years and it’s worn very, very well against one cat (11 years) and 2 DCs (7 years).

Try Oak furniture land. We have dressers and cupboards from there, and like them.

We have an Oak Furnitureland extending table and it's lovely.

I got a Victorian pine farmhouse table for £700 on loveantiques.com. It's been restored and is so beautiful and sturdy. I'd really recommend looking at vintage/antique/secondhand furniture as well as new stuff.

Echobelly · 07/04/2023 19:22

As I'd got the extra money honestly I wanted something a bit fancier than IKEA. We did look after JL today as we were nearby but they were all too narrow and finishes very mdf.

Looked at oak furniture land- what we have now is a 2nd hand set from there (was my brother's) but the only style that was ok was the exact one we have. I don't think they update their designs very often!

Will take a look at second hand though not sure there'll be much that's out style and in budget.

I got a gorgeous extending dining table in October from dwell.co.uk (the Ore in light grey - £999 but cheaper in other colours) and paired it with chairs from Next as the legs matched

NotMeNoNo · 07/04/2023 19:42

Are you near a Trade Secret warehouse (Oxfordshire/Cheshire)

Also it's worth looking at local independent/posh Scandi furniture shop, may be out of budget but they might have a sale and you will get an idea of design.

Radi06 · 07/04/2023 19:55

You sound like you're after exactly what I've been looking for for years!

I want solid wood, oak, 100cm wide, 6-10 extendable.

Baker and Stonehouse have some but they are expensive.

thatsn0tmyname · 07/04/2023 19:57

We have a g -plan oval extendable table. The drop leaf folds inside, it's 1970s and was a bargain from Etsy.

swansease · 07/04/2023 19:58

I saw some nice tables in this shop in Cardiff

So, we went to Tottenham Court Road today - somewhat to our surprise we got one at Bo Concept (our old sofa is from there) that was nearer £2k, but having looked around it was just the right one, and the right size (a bit bigger than current, but expands loads, so a generous 6-10 people) and we still have budget for chairs. Got the largest version of this:

There was a smaller one in my original budget, but I figured it was worth getting the one that would sit another 4 people, rather than 2, once extended. Meaning we don't have to get out trestle tables when we have another household over.

It's light oak, so there are various chair styles we could buy that would go with it. Plus it was 15% off in sale this weekend.

Go to an auction op. Loads of high quality tables at low prices.

Mumwithbaggage · 13/01/2026 06:21

I've sworn that I'll buy future dining tables from auctions - so many bargains to be had! Mind you, I'm going through a bit of a mid century phase at the moment.

throwaway20262025 · 13/01/2026 10:45

OP posted this three years ago, and bought a table then.

Quagmireschin · 13/01/2026 11:15

Look on Facebook marketplace.

Not for second hand, but for people who buy end of ranges, or just ranges in bulk.

I found one place adverting the exact same tables that next and M&S and online retailers buy to sell on (they all come from the same places but different shops have different mark ups).

6 seater oak table for £150, same “brand” that next sell for £800.
