Around Teesside recommendations

We have currently lived in Devon for 20 years but the job opportunities are awful and we would love to move back to the NE. Having just spent the week at Saltburn and absolutely loved it. (I even went surfing and ate a pasty)

We looked at jobs and there are literally hundreds for DH on higher salaries and the absolute job of my dreams is currently in Teesside.

Can anyone recommend an area within 20 miles of Teesside that would be lovely to move to?

Housing budget is £350k and I'd love a train station nearby.

We know there are issues with Teesside so posts "North East Bashing" will be pointless as there's no need to state the obvious 😂 we are from Newcastle...

I think Newcastle is too far (traffic, fuel etc!)

Sedgefield is a great little town, no trains though in your budget you would probably need to go for a new build rather than one of the period properties. Yarm is decent, and there is a train station in Eaglescliffe, or go for Saltburn since you have already seen it and liked it.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/04/2023 08:56

For prettiness Robin Hoods Bay or Helmsley

For amenities loads of the bigger towns are fine

wonkylegs · 04/04/2023 09:04

The villages surrounding Darlington are good for being on the edge of Teesside but well connected to the main roads and rail connections and only a short distance to the coast.
We live in this area and DH works in Middlesbrough and I work across the NE (from newcastle to North Yorkshire)
We are close to Yarm but house prices are more reasonable than being in Yarm (and we avoid the awful morning traffic in the town) and we have a train station connecting us to darlington and the coast
We came down from Newcastle and I was initially concerned about leaving the city but actually where we are is very well connected and gives access to loads of facilities across the region quite easily by road and rail.
Schools are ok but could be better at secondary level, although primary and 6th form are good.

CatOnTheChair · 04/04/2023 09:28

Best schools are around Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Ingleby Barwick, imo. Ingleby doesn't have a train station.
Should get a 4 bed detached for 350k.
But if you love Saltburn, why not there? Or Marske?

HinnyInDevon · 04/04/2023 09:46

Such amazing replies thank you. Absolutely hooting at the "move to Saltburn" idea because we didn't even think of it, yes its amusingly obvious 😂

The NE is so well connected compared to the SW. It feels so overwhelming to have decent transport links!

Going to look at houses in all these suggestions! Thank you 😊

Guisborough is lovely

Bearpawk · 04/04/2023 11:19

I'd look at sedgefield/ sadberge/ aycliffe village/ hurworth and Croft on tees/ Durham

twistyizzy · 04/04/2023 11:24

Guisborough, Saltburn, Eaglescliffe, Yarm, Croft, Sedgefield are the best that side of the A1. Would personally avoid anywhere around Stockton/Middlesbrough area including Wynyard although the budget probably wouldn't stretch to Wynyard anyway. Thorpe Thewles is near Wynyard but is quite a nice little village.
No idea about secondary schools in those areas as we are Durham side but generally secondaries aren't as good as the primaries.

HappyJellyBaby · 04/04/2023 11:48

Yes Saltburn! And as others suggested, Guisborough. Maybe Marske if you like the sea (not sure about schools). Maybe Nunthorpe.

Sedgefield never feels very well connected to me.

Not sure about property prices and travel time but Northallerton is lovely and good schools.

Just watch out for travel time along the N Yorks coast, it looks handy but lots of the roads are actually windy, hilly, slow. (Although you will be used to this coming from Devon).

QuintanaRoo · 04/04/2023 11:49

Yarm
guisborough
great ayton and surrounding villages

FourTeaFallOut · 04/04/2023 11:54

You won't get a garden with a £350k home in Saltburn, would that bother you?

For that money, and a nearby train station I'd head to Nunthorpe if you are not too worried about a busy village vibe or to Yarm (or Yarm end of Eaglescliffe) if you are.

Actually, I take that back, you might. I always have my rightmove settings set to 4 beds so that skews the results.

I think we're going to look a little but further south on the A19 towards York. More and more jobs are popping up.

We recently moved to Yarm and love it. Such a lovely town.
Eaglescliffe, Nunthorpe, Marton and Acklam near Hall Drive are also nice (I grew up there, schools not as good though).
Stokesley, Great Ayton, Hutton Rudby are good areas.
Saltburn is also gorgeous, of course! We go every couple of weeks.

my home turf

Crikeyalmighty · 05/04/2023 15:32

How about Durham ? Still in budget

Lou670 · 05/04/2023 15:34

I was born in Saltburn but live in the south now. Saltburn is lovely and a good train link to Middlesbrough and Darlington. There are some lovely little villages around Saltburn but avoid Brotton (I grew up in Brotton), Loftus, Lingdale, Boosbeck. Guisborough is a lovely market town. Great Ayton is lovely as is Yarm. Middlesbrough has some rough areas. It depends how rural you want to be as there as some little places on the Moors. Whitby is lovely but gets very busy during the seasonal times with holiday makers. Moving more inland and slightly out of Teesside is York which is also lovely. Good Luck in deciding. Go up for a few days and explore the area.

I own a property in hutton rudby
£350k isnt realistic for anything other than a small terrace with a tiny yard
similarly stokesley and great ayton

Hobbesmanc · 05/04/2023 15:35

My home area. The villages around the A66 have some good options although no public transport. Yarm is the jewel of the area but traffic is horrid. Eaglescliffe may be better. Great schools. Guisborough. Hutton Rudby. Stokesley. Great Ayton.

North towards Teesdale is so pretty. Bernard Castle for example. Or down the A19 towards Osmotherly or Northallerton.

WestminsterAbbey · 05/04/2023 15:37

Ingleby barwick (barrack for old locals) is one if the largest housing estates in Europe with very limited facilities

£350 k budget though
all those villages pretty much out of reach for anything other than a 2 bed terrace

QforCucumber · 05/04/2023 15:40

@WestminsterAbbey We've just (2 years ago) moved to Ingleby with 2 small kids and absolutely love it - wouldn't say its limited at all tbf (however, 9 years ago when we bought our first house it really was and we chose Marton over it then)

OP where are the jobs you're looking at ?

Northallerton is quite central to both York and Saltburn/the coast.

Thank you!! I've seen the perfect house in Stokesley. I phoned up the estate agent and gave them my budget. They said quite a few properties will be going on this week with nice gardens and in my budget. 😊
