Around Teesside recommendations

We have currently lived in Devon for 20 years but the job opportunities are awful and we would love to move back to the NE. Having just spent the week at Saltburn and absolutely loved it. (I even went surfing and ate a pasty)

We looked at jobs and there are literally hundreds for DH on higher salaries and the absolute job of my dreams is currently in Teesside.

Can anyone recommend an area within 20 miles of Teesside that would be lovely to move to?

Housing budget is £350k and I'd love a train station nearby.

We know there are issues with Teesside so posts "North East Bashing" will be pointless as there's no need to state the obvious 😂 we are from Newcastle...

I think Newcastle is too far (traffic, fuel etc!)

How about Durham ? Still in budget

for a former pit village not the town

budget is going to be the driver here

@WestminsterAbbey We've just (2 years ago) moved to Ingleby with 2 small kids and absolutely love it - wouldn't say its limited at all tbf (however, 9 years ago when we bought our first house it really was and we chose Marton over it then)

OP where are the jobs you're looking at ?

Northallerton is quite central to both York and Saltburn/the coast.

There's so many jobs (it's like a little hub!) I don't have to focus on one particular area anymore

The roles are either in York or Teesside (which I know well and am happy to commute to) and there's some in Durham too.

Thank you!! I've seen the perfect house in Stokesley. I phoned up the estate agent and gave them my budget. They said quite a few properties will be going on this week with nice gardens and in my budget. 😊

Brilliant! We were in Stokesley yesterday and go often for the swimming pool and to get horse feed. It is a lovely high street with nice cafes etc and beautiful walks up the hills that are very close by.

No train
no real bus service

a town definitely divided by road

have lived there as well
lots of rural deprivation

where is the house?

EvelynKatie · 05/04/2023 15:51

Durham won't get too much for 350k you'd need to branch further out.

HinnyInDevon · 05/04/2023 15:52

@WestminsterAbbey you seem pretty down on the whole thing :/

@CormoranStrikeIsBloodyLovely I've just phoned another 2 estate agents and they've all said house prices are falling in that area. Just a little bit but enough to make a difference. Good to know!

Ingleby barwick (barrack for old locals) is one if the largest housing estates in Europe with very limited facilities

😂 it isn't that bad. Geez

It isn't far off, you couldn't pay me to live there 😊

QforCucumber · 05/04/2023 15:57

@WestminsterAbbey you really don't like the area do you?

for balance, I grew up in Great Ayton - went through both schools in Stokesley, FIL still lives there and I'd move back again in a heartbeat if our budget stretched to it

HinnyInDevon · 05/04/2023 16:23

DH is adamant on a train station and swimming pool nearby 😂 I wish I had a huge map to unfold on the floor....

OP posts:
QforCucumber · 05/04/2023 16:26

How nearby?

for example Ingleby has a pool but station is a 10 min drive
Stokesley has a pool but no local station.

Yarm has 2 station (or 3) but no pool, but there is a pool a 10 min drive away.

Northallerton has both but at different sides of the town.

Darlington has a pool and a big station, but the pool has been declared closed for the next 6 months I think it is

HinnyInDevon · 05/04/2023 16:30

Oh my goodness @QforCucumber your local knowledge is amazing.

Short drive to pool and train station is fine!

(God, we don't even have swimming pools here, they all got closed down or they're seasonal only! I can't wait to move!)

Thirsk. Train station, main line East Coast, 15 minutes into York. Station is a little out of the centre.
Easy access to A19 for York or Teeside.
A swimming pool!

QforCucumber · 05/04/2023 16:35

Those I've listed are council pools, there are private gyms with pools too - just depends what you're looking to spend.

Ds1 is in an outstanding Ofsted primary 0.25 miles from our house, DS2 in an outstanding nursery a similar distance and I work 2 miles the other way, Gym is a 5 min walk (with pool) DH and I both have short commutes (salaries not amazing but work life balance more than makes up for it - that plus our 4 bed dethatched house for which we paid under £250k) - I'd never leave the area (also spent the weekend in Saltburn so likely saw you hah)

HinnyInDevon · 05/04/2023 16:36

Thank you @Lovanna - is Thirsk alright for kids? Ours are pre teens.

They aren't into sports but do love cycling and swimming.

HinnyInDevon · 05/04/2023 16:38

@QforCucumber haha how funny! Do you have a dog? I saw so many cute little dogs at Saltburn especially spaniels 😍

There's so much to think about!

CatOnTheChair · 05/04/2023 16:42

Hmm, pool and train station limits things.
Saltburn has both......

hattymattie · 05/04/2023 16:43

I love Stokesley - used to swim in the pool when I was a child - so pretty. Many pretty villages around there too but no train station. Good road links though.

Roundaboutabee · 05/04/2023 17:00

It’s suburbia and Middlesbrough but every time I visit my inlaws in Nunthorpe I’m wowed by the quality and choice of family housing. Loads of big solid 4/5 beds, decent secondary catchment, several primary schools. And easy out to York/A66
etc. Saltburn is lovely but it’s another 20 minutes to get anywhere.

WhiteFire · 05/04/2023 18:31

Fingers crossed for Stokesley. A budget of 350k gives you a good range of properties.

How old are you?
I probably know you!

I don't mind the area but £350k doesn't really get you much and the rural deprivation is initially hidden but very real. Very little for teenagers to do which is why we moved. Much less vibrant communities than when I was growing up as schools close, post office close, shops close, pubs close etc. 2nd home owners to blame!

I have lived in Stokesley. It is a long drive to a functioning train service. Darlington really as the rest have a poor service, Northallerton and Thirsk are patchy, Middlesbrough on a poor line.

QforCucumber · 05/04/2023 19:00

@WestminsterAbbey Hah 37.

I do agree there, we get the train to London direct from eaglescliffe a few times a year though, and to York, Manchester and Newcastle from Middlesbrough.

kids here are under 10 and yes definitely aware that in the smaller areas we’d have become their taxis as they grow but since moving out of the villages we’re much happier with facilities

Id definitely not want to raise teens in Great Ayton or the smaller villages - and was shocked as their suggestions (hence those not being in my options) they’re all just too cliquey and everyone knowing everyone’s business.

I am much older
I left Stokesley School in 1985

Darlington has the best rail connections just because it's on the mainline but yes the main public pool at the Dolphin centre is closed for 6mths for a refurb however the training pool, toddler pool and diving pool are still open and there are various other pools in the area that do swimming lessons or swimming.

wonkylegs · 05/04/2023 19:15

We have used the railway station for granny today including her getting a train from Darlington to our village and will be at the dolphin centre for swimming lessons tomorrow
Our village is definitely one of the less picturesque (although it does have nice bits and views there are more modern rather than period properties) but as it's quite big there is more housing available than some places so the prices aren't as high as some of the prettier villages
