Bad neighbours

Pulled out of a house sale today. Feeling glum. Please tell me I did the right thing.

Got the final paperwork though and noted a disagreement between previous tenant and neighbour.

Turns out the police were called several times for the neighbour (still lives next door to the house I wanted) due to alcohol/ noise and drugs miss use.

It was a lovely wee place, nice and close to family in the north.

I don't want to risk living next to this idiot though do i? He won't change.

100% done the right thing , another house will come up that you’ll love

BumWad · 31/03/2023 21:26

Dodged a bullet there!!! Phew

SmigeonPigeon · 31/03/2023 21:26

You have absolutely done the right thing. Poor neighbours are a nightmare and can wreck your sanity.
Poor vendors though, they must have been thrilled at the prospect of getting away from them.

housesarehard · 31/03/2023 21:31

Thanks all! This is helping! I've never actually had bad neighbours before, but read threads on here all the time about how bad it is.

The estate agent made me feel a bit shitty about it. I get he is after the sale, so I should just ignore him.

Buying by myself so having a wobble.

You did the right thing x 100. You've just saved yourself from a miserable situation.
Your new home will come along soon I'm sure.

💯

mrsfennel · 31/03/2023 22:30

If it was my dream house and I had paid for survey and solicitors I would probably have gone ahead, but I know my level of tolerance, as long as you have done right by you thats all that matters.

Over what time period were the police called out? Was he a Tennant or owner?
I think there is always a risk of bad neighbours unless you buying a large detached house.

SophiaSW1 · 31/03/2023 22:31

You'd be crazy to buy that house

SilentHedges · 01/04/2023 16:47

I viewed a perfect house, I loved it, but I could tell by looking at next door (and their light blocking lelandi style trees) that they could be trouble. I bought another house, but kept kicking myself I might have over reacted. The people who bought it instead of me, sold it again 18 months later. Trust your instinct, you've dodged a major problem. You'll find, and love, somewhere else.

user1471538283 · 01/04/2023 17:05

Oh thank goodness you found out! Honestly my ex neighbors were so bad it made me sick and it took me 2 years to recover!

Well done! I'm so pleased for you!

Ventingtura · 01/04/2023 20:13

Well done!

Of course the estate agent is annoyed. Now has got to find some other poor unsuspecting soul to buy it.

You made a brilliant decision.

housesarehard · 01/04/2023 20:15

@user1471538283 thank you! This is what I need to hear!

Thank you all!

I bought my perfect house five years ago. Brilliant neighbours all round. Last summer an utter ARSE moved in opposite - sits on his front step smoking weed day and night bellowing in his huge man's voice about how farkin done in he is from last night; he yells and bullies his children who visit fortnightly, and does the same to their mum when she drops them off. His reefer-ends, beer cans, energy drink cans, now litter what was a tidy lane in the countryside. He's vile vile vile.

And it's RUINED my joy in my perfect house. OP, you did the Right Thing.

100%. My sister had to move back in with our parents six months ago because of some ASBOs living next door in her block of flats.
(They have been evicted now thank god!)

BlueMongoose · 03/04/2023 15:34

You were right to pull uot if you had doubts about that. One of my friends had a hell of a time in a flat she bought because a neighbour who then moved in above was totally anti-social (his landlord, a housing association, did nothing, the LA did what they could, but it took a long time to get it sorted, it didn't stop until he and his family moved IIRC) but I think it harmed her health very badly.

KievLoverTwo · 03/04/2023 16:33

How awful. You absolutely did the right thing. Can I just ask, are people generally not aware of this crime rate tool?

https://www.adt.co.uk/crime-in-my-area

I've used it for every house I've thought of buying. At one viewing, I asked the vendors 'why am I seeing six incidents of violence and sexual offences listed on your [very small] road over the last 8 months on ADT's crime tool?'

They looked really baffled for a minute, looked at each, then said 'that's probably next door but one, they argue a lot and I think he beats her up sometimes.'

Noped the heck right out of there. Absolutely invaluable tool if this sort of thing matters to you.

Thanks so much for this! I'm a little nervous to begin my house search again now. I will definitely be using this! Thank you

You've done the right thing.

I was looking in a really small search area (village) an amazing opportunity came up for sale backing onto a friend of a friend. My friend linked us up for me to ask questions and the FOAF said absolutely don't touch it with a barge pole. The NDN is a nightmare for kids.

A retired couple, one with a disability moved in and the NDN gave them horrendous grief from day one. FOAF could hear it from their garden!

So I dodged a bullet and so have you.

Mine is also a very small search area, in a village. I think I will have to widen it to include the nearest town.

Well done for avoiding the awful neighbours!

Buying a house is hard isn’t it, I had to buy in Covid so it was tricky, ended up buying on a main road which I don’t love, but all my neighbours are lovely, I can live with the noise but bad neighbours can really make your life hell.

You did the right thing.

You're welcome. Out of interest, how did you find out about the neighbour dispute? We discovered one about a house we were thinking of buying by looking at a complaint on a planning application, but our vendors simply lied and said there had been no disputes on the standard forms conveyancers get them to fill out.

housesarehard · 04/04/2023 12:30

Hi @KievLoverTwo there was one comment on the TA6 form. Everyone tried to play it down, but it just felt wrong so I went and knocked on the neighbour the other side of the bad neighbour - he told me all the details re weed and the police being called.
