Crazy or great idea, turning bathroom into a bedroom

We currently live in a 3 bed property, have 4 children.
We have a very small study room (which we use for junk) and ironing.
We have a downstairs toilet.

Currently thinking of turning our upstairs bathroom into a bedroom and converting the study room into a compact shower room.

Any ideas?

That makes more sense

Yes @titchy - with an opaque glass door into the bathroom so you don’t lose the light into the hallway

What titchy says.

I have three teens. Depending on the dimensions (which sound small) there’s no way I would willingly create a small bathroom. I say this having lived with a ‘family’ bathroom (our only bathroom at the time) that was 1.6m x 1.8m for 7 years. It was hellish. However the suggestions to move a wall are very good. There’s a lot that can be done with spotlights and high, horizontal, opaque glass windows to add more light.

@titchy has it

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just move the study wall into the 3rd bedroom a bit? Change the direction the door hangs on bedroom 3 and the small bit of empty space created by the new wall could be narrow built in shelves or some coat and bag hooks.

I thought of the purple and blue idea too. Get prices to work out which is best. Bath in blue or bath in purple? Moving plumbing and setting waterproofing into floors etc is often expensive.

Thank you all, I'm glad I posted- some interesting points to consider

@MsCunk idea is probably the most affordable, especially if you have stud walls rather than brick.

if you’re thinking of moving at some point - I’d be very put off a house with the bathroom downstairs.

But it won't be downstairs. The floor plan has been posted numerous times.

I would capture the wasted landing space like this. the corner bedroom would still be on the small side but would be lovely and light with two windows and would be big enough for a single bed at least. the bathroom only needs to be 170cm long for a shower-bath so might be able to give a bit more space to the bedroom.

family homes without a proper bathroom are difficult to sell and you would be destroying a significant amount of value.

The feasible option is going to depend where the soil pipe is. Is it next to the study or at the other side of the room?

I'd keep the bathroom a decent size. It needs space for getting dressed. If you have girls it's so so so handy to wash their hair over the bath. Or get in and shave you legs with the shower attachment etc.
A right pain to lose that. Boys only, you might get away with compact shower room...6 people and one bathroom is tight regardless.
If you had space in a utility room for another shower that'd be great too.

If you can post the dimensions of each room.

Brunelofbrio · 20/03/2023 09:18

Some good ideas here. If you are going to extend the bathroom space onto the landing then can you think about a light chimney? Assuming that these rooms are below the roof. I’ve known people put them in and they are really effective

I like @titchy idea the best. You would also get to keep at least some of the bathroom fixtures and features where they are.

LlynTegid · 20/03/2023 09:46

You are keeping two toilets which I think is important. Ensure enough room/shelves etc for no doubtless all the various shampoos/shower gels etc that your family will have.

Mirabai · 20/03/2023 09:47

1 tiny shower room for 6 people?

Where would you store toiletries, towels, medication, sanitary pads?
