Crazy or great idea, turning bathroom into a bedroom

EyeC · 19/03/2023 21:57

We currently live in a 3 bed property, have 4 children.
We have a very small study room (which we use for junk) and ironing.
We have a downstairs toilet.

Currently thinking of turning our upstairs bathroom into a bedroom and converting the study room into a compact shower room.

Any ideas?

Is the study upstairs or downstairs?

Plumbing issues aside, do what works for you. I’d box in some of the fundamental plumbing services in the room you are turning into a bedroom though. Less costly if you need to swap back later to sell.

Also, are you planning on having a loo in the shower room? You can squeeze a wet room with toilet into a very small space, but it has to be properly water tight and is fairly specialist or you’ll get leaks.

FlounderingFruitcake · 19/03/2023 22:08

A compact shower room is not a substitute for a full family bathroom unless you live in a studio flat. Fine if it works for you but I’d be prepared for it to cause problems if (when?) you come to sell.

minipie · 19/03/2023 22:10

Why wouldn’t you use the study as a bedroom? Is it not big enough to fit a single bed?

WinterMusings · 19/03/2023 22:11

Sounds like (expensive) madness to me.

how much does the study get used?

can you convert a garage or the dining room into a bedroom?

QuillBill · 19/03/2023 22:15

With no toilet? It sounds like an absolutely terrible plan to me. Moving plumbing so that someone can have a bedroom when there is already an unused room.

EyeC · 19/03/2023 22:16

To answer some questions
-Study room is upstairs
-it won't fit a single bed

  • it will fit a compact shower, toilet and sink but not much room for anything else
  • the study room has a small window

It will have a toilet, sink and shower, just no bath.

What is next to the study? If a larger bedroom, move the wall across to make the study larger and leave the bathroom alone.

We did this in a property with a tiny box room and very large room next door. You'd never know that the wall had been moved now.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/03/2023 22:22

Is the study near the existing plumbing, or above the kitchen or downstairs loo?
sounds like a good plan if the plumbing isn’t too far away, or @CC4712 idea to move a wall is good.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/03/2023 22:23

Also, diagram?

RogueRedSock · 19/03/2023 22:27

How far off fitting a bed is the study? Any clever custom bed options? Might be cheaper And that person can have access to clothes storage elsewhere?

minipie · 19/03/2023 22:31

Ok that’s a very small room. I wouldn’t have that as your only bathroom. With 4 kids it will be a nightmare as they get older.

If you post a floorplan there might be some other ideas ?

EyeC · 19/03/2023 22:34

Here's the floor plan

What are the dimensions of both rooms? Plumbing should be okay as they're next to each other.

EyeC · 19/03/2023 22:37

@Twoshoesnewshoes I've attached the floor plan, luckily the study is next to the bathroom.

@SwedishEdith No idea on dimensions but will measure tomorrow

given that floor plan, yes this is a sensible plan. it will give you an extra bedroom and you don't lose out much in terms of bathroom.

if you don't mind losing the landing window, you could even add a bit of the landing in to make it a decent size bedroom with two windows. but that would make the centre of the house dark.

Looks like it might work well- if you used the current bathroom as a bedroom could you also nick a bit of the landing to add to the new bedroom, the bit outside bedroom 2 up to the door opening?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/03/2023 22:40

Oh snap @parietal

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/03/2023 22:42

You could put a door with a frosted window on the new bathroom to let light on the landing

Mykingdomforanap · 19/03/2023 22:46

What’s cheaper? Re plumbing the study or keeping the bathroom where it is but moving the wall to pinch a foot to give to the study?

Whatisthisanyidea · 19/03/2023 22:49

Bedroom to take up landing - move the wall.

Add a skylight window at the top of the bedroom door or similar above the bathroom - can fit in a bath then

No. Rearrange like on attached - purple is enlarged bedroom, blue is bathroom with bit of hallway.
