Just browsing rightmove to pass time, no intentions to move but would you look at this house!

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/130448189#/?channel=RES_BUY

So many lovely features. It could be an amazing house if you had a bit of cash and love 30s style.

I know York is expensive, but that price is crazy.

Northernlurker · 04/03/2023 21:20

It's in a very pleasant area, decent primary schools and it's a big plot. You can cycle into the city in 10 mins and to the station in 15 I would say. In the context of property prices now I wouldn't say it's overpriced though I do wonder what they first put it on at.

Oh gosh, it's my dream house 😭 Those fireplaces are just everything 😍

Northernlurker · 04/03/2023 22:00

I know! Just need the paint stripping off. Did you see the quarry tiles? Look in good nick. So annoyed there's not a pic of the hall!

I live just around the corner from this house!

It did sell but fell through recently due to the survey apparently. It needs an awful lot doing to it: has never had central heating for a start.

I think the price is ambitious given it needs so much doing to it.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 04/03/2023 22:10

I would change very little cosmetically. Heating for sure love the kitchen and bathrooms

Northernlurker · 04/03/2023 22:12

Ah that's interesting @JoanThursday I don't live too far away either. It looks quite solid but is clearly untouched. So heating, rewire, woodworm, roof.....

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/03/2023 22:15

The bathroom tiles are 1970s. I can remember my parents doing the family bathroom with the same design.

Northernlurker · 04/03/2023 22:18

Yes the bathrooms do look dire. I was wondering whether you should turn the current bathroom in to en-suite for bed 1 and turn smallest room in to family bath and go up in loft for fourth room plus bath or turn current bath in to en suite and use current loo plus landing space and cupboard to make family bath + or- loft. Not that I'm buying it!

A beautiful house and I would certainly buy it for the listed price without a second thought if it was in the southeast (where it would be priced around the £1m mark at least).

Viviennemary · 04/03/2023 22:22

It looks quite a big house from the outside but the rooms are quite small going by the measurements.

The first time it was on the market, the agent held an 'open house' and it sold very, very quickly. It's hanging around a bit longer this time - I think it was on for £725k originally (nuts!).

There's a big detached house round the corner on Stockton Lane which has been on for ages now - looks more to be a quick 'polish' than a full on refurb and it's on for £900k+. Now that is bonkers money for York.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/03/2023 22:28

I've looked really hard and can't see any desirable period features. Someone please point out any I've missed!

JoanThursday · 04/03/2023 22:29

Mumsanetta · 04/03/2023 22:22

Yep, of course a big difference between North and south house prices.

But bear in mind you can buy a 3 bed semi 3/4 a mile down the road for about £325k!

This area is considered to be rather noce, but still .... unless someone is relocating from the south, I can't see how many can jump to this.

JoanThursday · 04/03/2023 22:30

*nice!

Madcats · 04/03/2023 22:31

Just popping on to mention that we definitely had that particular linoleum in the bathroom in my parents house (so if I can remember it, as a small child, it must be from about 1970-75).

Just the fireplaces I think!

It may have panelling in the hall, but if it does I would have thought there would be a pic of it.

Bunnyfuller · 04/03/2023 22:33

So expensive for what needs doing, and doubt you’d get it back. Apart from the fireplaces and room sizes, it is just outdated.

MrsWojadobakowsky · 04/03/2023 22:43

I was brought up in a house that was newly built around 1950 and it had those fireplaces. I still have one of the grates and the stones but the fireplaces were knocked out.

MrsWojadobakowsky · 04/03/2023 22:46

Also had the same style bath with the black side, but there was a little soapdish made into a tile in the wall. Black & white were popular for bathrooms then.

Northernlurker · 05/03/2023 00:05

Period features - Panelling is described but not pictured. A lot of York houses of that period do have beautiful panelled halls. The fireplaces, three downstairs and two upstairs at least. Picture rails and I think possibly the ceiling rose and lights downstairs. Some of the doors.
Maybe the light switches too (not a good thing!Hmm)

Northernlurker · 05/03/2023 00:06

Oh and the quarry tiles. A pantry is mentioned.

Got to ditch the sunroom though.

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 05/03/2023 00:07

And I think the wall at the front. If you took the hedges out, sorry birds! You'd be able to see it properly.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 05/03/2023 00:17

The outside is lovely, it’s a very attractive house and certainly has kerb appeal, the inside is surprisingly small and the features are just fairly standard for the period, nothing particularly remarkable, it will make a pleasant family home once renovated.
