Just browsing rightmove to pass time, no intentions to move but would you look at this house!

So many lovely features. It could be an amazing house if you had a bit of cash and love 30s style.

Looks like it has potential from the outside- pretty shape, good size site but the inside is surprisingly small, without many attractive features and needs a lot of money spent on it.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 05/03/2023 01:20

Not many period details left, sadly.

We viewed some houses close to this last year - I think it's priced with last year's market still in mind. There were 3 beds needing work (although this wasn't apparent from the photos as they looked immaculate!) that sold v quickly for £600-650k. We didn't even get to view some others as they were already booked solidly for viewings and sold quickly.

It's a nice area, easy access to ring road and bus/bike to the centre, much bigger gardens than further in, good parking and schools.

We bought further in in the end with a much smaller garden.

We had those bathroom tiles in our kitchen in the early 80s. The pattern kind of looks like a chick depending what way up you have the tiles.

interesting someone says they like the quarry tiles, we have the same ones on our kitchen floor and I dislike them, am thinking of covering them over. My house is Victorian, no idea if my quarry tiles are original or not.

YorkHouse · 05/03/2023 09:04

This is one nearby we viewed - it looks lovely in the pictures but was in desperate need of a rewire, the kitchen was elderly and chipped, the thing that looks like a conservatory is more like a lean-to shack with the back door and a washing machine in it. The EA was trying to market that as a third reception room!

I recognise that! It's only a couple of doors away, isn't it? I love this style of house (I live round the corner).

Eek the EPC

YorkHouse · 05/03/2023 12:16

Yes @JoanThursday it's quite close to that one. It was a beautiful house - light flooding into it, how the windows were placed. But dated and needing work inside. It apparently went for £595k and has much less space than this one that's currently on.

And a very different market now!

Nannyfannybanny · 05/03/2023 12:30

Our last house was 1930,a semi cottage much smaller than that one. Original panel doors underneath the hardboard.bakolite handles,a walk in pantry. Range fireplace, when we removed the lino, there was terracotta tiles,DH used the bread oven to put in the extractor fan. We had the original wooden cupboards, kept the big ones and pantry. The bath was all rusty, original black/white tiles, high level cistern.

I don't know why, but it has a sinister look to me. I don't think I'd be happy there even with renovations.

NevieSticks · 05/03/2023 12:38

Oh god those fireplaces are ugly. Grew up with those as the only source of heating.

It's the weird rocking horse 😂

I thought that even before I saw the rocking horse, but that clinched it😁

JustLikeAStatue · 05/03/2023 12:40

I don’t think is that special either. I’ve renovated five old houses, reinstalling period features. I’m not seeing anything ‘wow’ about this at all.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/03/2023 12:43

Given the work it would need, the price seems too high.

I love quarry tiles. I'd definitely keep them if in good nick.

I would change very little cosmetically. Heating for sure love the kitchen and bathrooms

really???

I really like the house & the grounds. But for me, it would need a LOT of money spent on it. Including new (sympathetic to the house, not ultra modern) kitchen & bathrooms.

sadly don't have the £700, let alone another £150 to sort it out.

@JoanThursday it would be interesting to see the survey!

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/03/2023 22:28

I've looked really hard and can't see any desirable period features. Someone please point out any I've missed!

For me it's not so much 'features' as liking the look of the house, being a 'proper' house, bay windows, having actual working fireplaces and the garden & land with the cute summer hut etc.

There is a very high water table in this part of York. Many houses have damp unless there have been interventions / treatment (and I speak from experience!). Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case here.

Madcats · 06/03/2023 13:56

That house has to be a probate sale, where they have tried to smarten up the some anaglypta in the bedroom with a pot of grey paint (I suspect that is disguising mould or damp).

I grew up in a similar style house and we installed central heating in the 70's. Structurally it was very solid. That house must have been jolly cold to live in if the heating was mainly coal fires.

I suspect the whole lots needs a rewire and replumb. I imagine that a lot of the brickwork would benefit from repointing (the roof has hopefully had some attention of the past few decades).
