should I wedge a non-integrated dryer in here (pic)

The integrated dryer has died, it's Hoover and apparently 2 years old (we moved in in November). There's no choice when it comes to integrated dryers unless I basically buy the same model and I frankly thought it was rubbish! There's much more choice when it comes to freestanding dryers and they are a good bit cheaper. I've measured and I can get a freestanding dryer in, it will stick out from under the worktop by about 3cm and I'll need to cut the kick board. The dryer would go next to the drawers. DH thinks I'm nuts but I think it will look ok, opinions??

No way would I . No. Will make your kitchen look a mess.

Gwen82 · 23/02/2023 10:28

Get yourself a kick ass dehumidifier instead. My washing dries in record time

AstroPete · 23/02/2023 10:32

@Gwen82 yes that's what he said! We've got a dehumidifier, I tend to use both. I put towels and sheets in the dryer and everything else on a the clothes horse.

Is it a peculiar size then as there are hundreds of integrated dryers out there . Having a tumble dryer would be a necessity for us .

Grumpybutfunny · 23/02/2023 10:39

What size is it? Loads of integrated dryers on offer try ao (you have to type it into the search to get them to come up)

whereeverilaymycat · 23/02/2023 10:40

Is it a kitchen or utility room? Utility room it wouldn't matter to me, but kitchen I'd want integrated again.

fatforty · 23/02/2023 10:44

I'd always go for integrated to replace integrated anything else will ruin the look of your very nice kitchen.
Is this the only place in the house you could put a tumble dryer?
Do you have a garage, a large cupboard it could go instead and change to unit to a normal cupboard.

AstroPete · 23/02/2023 10:52

It's a utility room, so not in constant view, but that's a good point I could put it in the garage! I could only see a few choices on AO, I've discounted hoover and candy, I'll have another look! It's not an unusual size

Go for miele

And either get one that does fit and doesn’t stick out

or put in garage

but your initial suggestion would make this room look very scrappy

MaybeSmaller · 23/02/2023 11:16

Your utility room looks nicer than my kitchen lol.

My Mum has a freestanding dryer wedged into a space like this, and it sticks out a mile and looks like rubbish, but it gets the job done TBH. It's only a utility room after all. Or stick it into the garage if it's connected to the house (mine isn't) and is convenient.

You're right about the lack of choice of integrated dryers. I'm puzzled by people who seem to think there are hundreds available. There are multiple models and brands, but they all seem to be Hoover/Candy or look like identical clones of the same thing, all made to the same specs in the same factory I bet.

Mosaic123 · 23/02/2023 11:51

If your washing machine is integrated why not get an integrated washer dryer and free up a cupboard?

Mosaic123 · 23/02/2023 11:51

Sell the washing machine

BlueSeaWave · 23/02/2023 11:53

As it’s a utility room doesn’t really matter if it sticks out as will be bigger and therefor hold a bigger load?

Caspianberg · 23/02/2023 11:53

No. Almost all models of integrated should fit, it’s not an unusual size

Try John Lewis, curry’s

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/02/2023 11:54

You can't be washing one load whilst another dries if you do that.

Mosaic123 · 23/02/2023 11:55

That's true but OP doesn't use it for everything

theresnolimits · 23/02/2023 12:00

You are me! I had the Hoover integrated tumble dryer in my new kitchen. It never worked well and died after about 18 months. Although it had a 10 year ‘parts warranty’ ( I stupidly ignored it until it was out of the two year warranty as it was summer), Hoover declared it was ‘beyond economic repair’ and offered me the same model at a discounted price ( about £400 I think). As I’d never buy one again, I declined.

There are not loads of integrated tumble dryers out there! When I had the kitchen done I was told the choice was really limited.

Eventually I had it removed, gained a storage cupboard and put a condenser dryer in the garage. It’s wonderful! Super quick and efficient taking about a third of the time of the integrated dryer when it was actually working. I assume so few models are available because they don’t work.

mumof31968 · 23/02/2023 12:02

My dryer is intergrated but cupboard door is broken at the mo needs some fitting to put it back on.

mondaytosunday · 23/02/2023 12:16

Non integrated white goods in kitchens is a pet peeve of mine (as is having laundry in the kitchen at all, but I know needs must). So search more - I can't believe there isn't another machine that would fit.

mummymummymummummum · 23/02/2023 12:49

I got the offer of a practically new freezer at a time when the old one was on its last legs. I took off the kick board and cupboard and shoved it in. Win!

Finally came to replace it 6 years later last year, and went back to integrated. Wished I'd done it much sooner! It just looked messy, and was difficult to clean around. The whole room just feels much nicer now.

WhoopItUp · 23/02/2023 12:50

I wouldn’t, you’ve got a lovely kitchen and this will really spoil the aesthetic.
I think you can only get integrated heat pump dryers now and they are much more expensive, and take forever to dry.

whereeverilaymycat · 23/02/2023 13:02

As it's a utility room then I'd go with what is the most practical / cost effective option. My tumble has been in the garage, but unless it's attached I wouldn't recommend it. Massive hassle going outside, especially in bad weather when you're more likely to use it.
It's a very nice looking utility, but given the point of it is to be functional and get stuff out of the kitchen, I'd be less precious about the look.

AstroPete · 23/02/2023 14:54

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go for freestanding and keep it in the garage for now. The garage is attached and you get into it through the utility but it's freezing in there! I'll have a think about whether I put it in the utility or keep it in the garage and gain a cupboard. I've got 3 DCs and two constantly muddy dogs so I need to get one ordered asap, the garage is a good stop gap solution

Your husband will be relieved!

Caspianberg · 23/02/2023 14:59

Recommend a heat pump dryer if in garage. They are the most energy saving nowadays and don’t have to be vented
