Light/white quartz worktop - will it stain?

user9989820190 · 16/02/2023 10:17

We're renovating our kitchen and thinking about worktops. I would like a white (or light) marble effect quartz but am concerned that spilling red wine, turmeric etc. and not wiping it up immediately will permanently stain the worktop.

Anyone with a light quartz worktop care to comment? Or anyone with another type of worktop as we are open to other types (probably not wooden though).

I suppose the thing to do is buy some samples and spill things all over them, leave them for a bit and see what happens.

We have white quartz. A month in I nearly killed my DH for leaving tumeric on them... But it did come out - the internet has various suggestions but the best was alcohol (vodka/gin/clear spirits) which gets it off really well.

Red wine/tomato sauce etc comes out really easily, it's only been tumeric that has caused any issue

Magic eraser sponge and a bit of cream cleaner sorts any stains out.

NamiSwan · 16/02/2023 10:38

I've got white quartz. A couple of times we've had stains from curry powder/turmeric..easiest way to get it out is whitening toothpaste, leave on for five minutes then scrub off. Other than that most things just wipe off.

Personally I wanted white as we have quite a low light kitchen and our previous side was black and it was too heavy. The white looks much nicer. In general quartz is pretty hard going so lasts, and is pretty easy to keep clean/looking nice.

Had ours for 7 years, 2 young kids and keen cookers.

Managed to get every stain out without much hassle; tomato, spices, coffee, paint, you name it.

Lemon cleaner stuff seems to go the trick for us.

Pegsmum · 16/02/2023 10:43

Certain things can stain it but don’t let that put you off. Barkeeper’s Friend is really good for shifting stains.

lilacclementine · 16/02/2023 10:47

Quartz is very tough. We've got white marble and I cook a lot. Nothing has ever not come out. I use a bit of diluted bleach for red wine/ curry but normal surface cleaners are usually enough

lilacclementine · 16/02/2023 10:49

Forgot to add- our kitchen fitter said that they were the toughest things available as quartz is basically non porus.

bellsbuss · 16/02/2023 10:51

Bar keepers friend will take out any stain. My youngest left a half eaten solero ice lolly on our quartz island last summer. I don't know what they put in them and it left a massive stain. Sprayed it with cleaner , wiped it , nothing. Poured near BKF on it , left it a few minutes , came back and wiped it and it went. It's good for curry stains as well

Thank you all so much. I am a big fan of Barkeeper's Friend, it hadn't occurred to me that we could use that. Am also taking notes about other cleaning methods, all very useful. It sounds as though quartz is pretty hardy stuff.

@NamiSwan yes low light on the kitchen is the reason we want the worktop as light as possible

I have Blanco Orion by Silestone (so not completely white) and the only thing that has stained it properly is the rusty feet of the dish drainer.

Anything else I have managed to get off with a spray kitchen bleach and a wipe.

Never experience tumeric though.

BarrelOfOtters · 16/02/2023 11:15

Barkeepers friend for turmeric or tea stains. A bit of washing up liquid seems to get anything else off. Really like the quartz and it bounces light around.

We've got a couple of silicone expandable pot stands we put stuff on when they come out the oven or off the hob, but it seems to withstand the odd time something hot has been put straight on it. pot stand

LucyWhipple · 16/02/2023 11:17

It’s the easiest thing ever to keep clean. Barkeeper’s friend is all you need.

Get something with a bit of fleck in it so you aren’t constantly noticing every crumb / speck of dust.

MrsRoyCropper · 16/02/2023 11:17

Bar keepers friend has removed any stain on our white quartz counter top. It’s still pristine after years of all sorts of spills, curry stains etc

HanSB · 16/02/2023 11:18

Get a small sample of any you are contemplating and test them out. This is what our kitchen designer recommended. Some were better than others. We use some pink stuff cream cleaner which always gets stains out

outnumbered77 · 16/02/2023 11:18

We have white quartz and tea stains all the time which is quite annoying. Bar keepers friend does get it out but it does seem that there's always a tea stain somewhere.

LancreWowhawk · 16/02/2023 11:23

DH is (to my ever lasting frustration) very, very messy- tea drips, minor spills and splashes, never cleared up. We have a light coloured quartz worktop - not white, but a pale beige (silestone stellar blanco), and it has never stained. I don't even need to scrub. Even tumeric just fades out within 24 hours, I just wipe up and leave it. It has been in for 4 years and there are no marks at all.

smileylottie87 · 16/02/2023 11:46

Agree with all the above, I was really worried about getting a cream coloured quartz (not block cream) due to the potential stains. I ordered samples from the company we were purchasing from and left, turmeric, red wine, coffee, a tea bag and ketchup on the samples for two days before cleaning off. Turmeric was the most stubborn but still came off easily.

My husband left a cast iron skillet wet on our two week old light quartz worktop when I was away on business for a few days. Despite his frantic attempts at getting rid of the rust stain, I saw it immediately when I got home.

I got it off with Hob Brite, (designed for ceramic hobs) and it’s been my go to quartz worktop stain remover ever since.

fabricstash · 16/02/2023 11:56

Not all engineered quartz surfaces are equal. I use them for work and Silestone is much better than other

toastofthetown · 16/02/2023 12:00

The only things I’ve had stain my white quartz worktops is an enamelled cast iron pot left to drain. I but I feel like it has lessened considerably and now I can only find it if I’m looking for it. No issues with red wine or turmeric.

May I ask if you still like/love your Stellar Blanco quartz worktop? Thinking of getting it myself.

LancreWowhawk · 23/09/2023 19:44

@LindaDawn yep! Still love it, still no marks. If I was choosing again tomorrow, I would still pick it, without hesitation.

LoveLabradors · 24/09/2023 10:18

As well as barkeepers friend (which is great) I highly recommend the solid pink stuff in a tub. It is brilliant at removing staining on white quartz.

Bellyblueboy · 24/09/2023 10:53

I lifted a bottle of wine this morning that had been sitting for two days on white quartz. Big red stain.

it came out with nano cream and a slightly rough cloth.

nano cream is amazing - the installer left it and there hasn’t been a stain yet it hasn’t lifted.

the builder left teabags on it all day - was raging. But it came out after about three days.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. What colour units do you have with your Stellar Blanco worktop please. I have dove grey (a pale grey). Do you think the Stellar Blanco worktop will go with the dove grey units please.
