Kitchen island seating hob, prep sink - island size?

Unsure whether we want to go down this route but want to exhaust all possibilities and not regret decisions!

We are going to be doing a mini renovation with new kitchen and can have an island up to 3.5 X 1.2m (possibly longer).

We would like to have seating for 4 around the corner at one far end: 2 along the short and 2 along the length in an L-shape.

We can fit an induction hob at the other end so those sitting at the island are a couple of metres from the hob.

Where, if at all possible, could we put a small prep sink? I can’t see how it would work if it is by the hob? Would it need to be somewhere in the middle of the island? If the latter is the only possibility then we will scrap the idea.

If anyone has a picture (either their own or found from the internet) then please do post it or DM me - I have trouble visualising the space.
TIA!

We have a large island but I think you're far better off not having anything on it. I wouldn't waste my time with a small prep sink. It's far more aesthetically pleasing to have one seamless surface. I'd also think carefully about seating at an angle, it doesn't feel right to me. The most useful thing on my island that I love is the socket on one end. The designer was against it because he thought it'd look ugly but I use it all the time.

Baxdream · 16/02/2023 07:52

Personally I think you would be cramming too much in.

Firstly, it costs more to get electric and plumbing to the island.

Ours is about 2.5m by 1.5 . We don't have anything on it and it will have 3 stools. We had a hob on our old island (similar size) and only had 2 stools on the corner.

I've never had a prep sink though and don't really see the point personally

Meandfour · 16/02/2023 07:58

I wouldn’t bother with a prep sink, it’ll look too busy.

Ours is 4.5m and we have the sink on one side of it and 4 seats along the other side.

Depending on what worktop you want, many quartz and stone slabs can do a max length of about 3.2m, sometimes 3.3m in a single piece.

Hobs on an island look good but where do all the spits and splashes land?

BarrelOfOtters · 16/02/2023 08:11

Our island is 90 wide and 3m long.

the hob is on it and nothing else. think about venting the hob. We can’t have anything above it due to roof lantern so had to have ducting put in below for a downward venting induction hob.

I think a prep sink isn’t a bad shout. Our sink is just behind so no point for us….

BarrelOfOtters · 16/02/2023 08:12

What I wish I’d put in was a little pull out cupboard under hob for bottles of oil, salt and pepper, spices etc…..

My hob is set centrally over two sets of drawer units where the top drawers are shallow. Cooking utensils in one, herbs and spices in the other. It's so handy.

iwantabreakfastpantry · 16/02/2023 11:13

Thanks everyone - really useful bit of advice there.
@LovelyDaaling - if the hob is over two drawers, where does the electrical parts of the hob hide? Are top two drawers that it straddles over fake drawers?
Re: splashes - we have currently pale tiles as a splashback and rarely ever have to wipe them down, at the most there is an occasional splatter.

@BarrelOfOtters - thank you for sharing that, yes we plan to have some sort of pull-out easy access oil, seasoning etc. Yes to venting hob - planning to get something similar to a Bora.

The induction hob is very shallow and the working parts are less than the depth of our work top so do not hang down below it. That's something to consider if you are going for a slimline worktop.

We have what @LovelyDaaling has, induction hob over shallow drawers. The units are the same. The floor is the same. The worktop is the same... in fact I'm kind of wondering if she is a) me or b) has been taking photos in my kitchen! Assuming neither of those are true, clearly she has excellent taste😀

Anyway, the drawers are fully functional with no space lost. I was sure our kitchen fitters would say no, but it works beautifully.

iwantabreakfastpantry · 16/02/2023 11:37

Ahgood to know , @LovelyDaaling - thanks very much.

Yes, to many plug points including around the island @LoveMAFS - that seems to be recurring piece of advice on the kitchen threads

Here is rough, but to scale, idea for the island - each square is 60 X 60cm (gaps between the island and kitchen run/dining table are not to scale).

There is a 30cm overhang (shaded area) for legs where the breakfast counter is.
The seating is snug around the corner but it will only be used for breakfast, homework (2 DCs) and that sort of occasional use - unlikely that all for of us will sit there together, as we will have a separate dining table.
The two sitting at the short end of the island will have a view of the garden.

I have been put off the idea of a prep sink and your comments have all been helpful in that regard.
We have an sink behind and to the left of the hob so that should be fine. Dishwasher will be next to the sink.

It might be worth laying out the seating arrangement at the corner at a table and seeing if it's workable. While 60cm is probably ok for the width for one person, if you have two people sitting right angles to each other only one is going to have a plate (but maybe that's not what you were planning or how you'll use it). You might want the overhanging worksurface to exten further towards the hob?

Good idea - I’ll do that. Looking online it suggested 30-45cm for the overhang. I think we will have enough cabinet space that we can afford to extend the depth of the overhang.

The venting hob we went for was a Neff one and had to be factored into the design of the Island and is takes up about a slim drawer's worth of space underneath the worktop. So we went for a cupboard under the hob. It also vents out the back so that had to be factored into the design so there's a slim cupboard at the back of it. The duct for it was put in under the floor before the screed was put down and the underfloor heating put in so we had to coordinate the kitchen fitters and builders on that and get a special flat bit made to fit it all together. It works fine now though but I'm glad we weren't thinking about it at the last minute.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 16/02/2023 12:17

Sorry OP I wasn't very clear - I meant you might want to move the fourth person (counting from the top left) one cabinet to the right in your diagram and hence the overhang would need to carry on one more unit right (not necessarily deeper)

Ah I see - thank you!

@iwantabreakfastpantry you're welcome (the chairs/stools for person 2 and 3 will hit each other even if it's just going to be a coffee bar not a sit down and eat bar)

iwantabreakfastpantry · 16/02/2023 13:16

On the photo attached, the pencil is at 120cm. The depth of the worktop is 60cm, so will be double this on the island. The plates are proper size dinner plates, so I think there is space for the person on the right of the pair to shuffle to left slightly to give the person on the far right a little more room. Our current bar stools are 40cm width so they should all fit under the counter.

That would be too cramped for me unless it was just sitting with a drink....I'm all elbows when I eat...

Haha, what a coincidence. I've seen those programmes where someone is living secretly in another person's home!

I agree - that would be way too cramped for me too. I hate worrying about jostling the person next to me if we're all jammed in. And the kids are a nightmare for banging into each other if they're sat too close at the table.

Sorry OP, I'd say you need more space.

iwantabreakfastpantry · 16/02/2023 15:54

Oh drat and and double drat!
