I am losing my mind trying to find a bloody shed. Please help.

We have a new garden layout and need shed storage at one side of the house. It needs to house a gas barbecue (not a megalith one - about 1 x 0.5m) and lawnmower (standard variety? But handle does fold over on it so can be relatively compact).

Theoretically this is all fine as the side passageways both just tip 3’0 but this doesn’t allow any tolerance on width. All. I. Can. See. Is sheds that are described as 3’0 wide but then of course there’s extra for roof overhang and tolerance. We really don’t have the width available.

Ideally I need 2’6 or 2’9 in width but these seemingly don’t exist. Length up to 7’0, height is complete bloody immaterial at this point, budget really ideally no more than £500, does not need to sing or dance. I am being driven insane by this quest. Currently at the stage where I wonder if I could just tip a Keter box on its side.

Can anyone offer steers or ideas?

I'm not sure you'll find a shed that narrow so you are in storage box territory, one thing I would say though is that the keter boxes rely on bits just slotting into other bits, there no fixings so if you tip one on their side the sides and bottom are likely to pop off. If you end up using a storage box metal or wood might be the better option as it will be screwed/bolted together.

OneArepa · 14/02/2023 14:44

Good point. Metal or wood might be a good shout if it comes to that, thanks. We’ve got a Keter bin cupboard but definitely not sure the sides could take being used as a floor.

Annoying that so many sites advertising ‘custom/bespoke’ solutions actually are just a list of preset sizes. We can’t be the only ones with this issue.

Very brief search shows that 2ft wide sheds/greenhouses exist but the door is in the wrong place, you need to door on the narrow Ned so you can get in.

Have you contacted a couple of local garden/handymen type services to see if they can just build you something?

cushionfiend · 14/02/2023 14:50

Just get in touch with some local shed companies, when we needed a slightly different size it was not a problem.

KimMG · 14/02/2023 14:53

A shed company we used in Cheshire custom built our shed for us - maybe similar companies exist near you?

BlueHexagon · 14/02/2023 14:55

Is this kind of thing too shallow? www.argos.co.uk/product/8032001

OneArepa · 14/02/2023 14:55

FatAgain yes, so many frustrating searches throwing up those ones.
Cushion will start ringing round. Just annoying it can’t be simpler.

@KimMG if you’ve got their details, I’d love to take a look?

@BlueHexagon the problem with those ones is there’s not enough room left to open/access the doors as they’d be facing the fence.

We had one built for us to the size and design we wanted from a local company.

This was the one we used

OneArepa · 14/02/2023 15:02

@Crazymadchickenlady brill, thanks. Will take a look. Do you mind me asking what sort of size and cost you were looking at?

These people do a 2'8" option: shedsdirect.net/garden-sheds/narrow-sheds/

SirVixofVixHall · 14/02/2023 15:04

Would a bike storage shed work OP ?

MyfavouriteisA · 14/02/2023 15:07

We’ve got a pair of narrow metal sheds from here:
www.yardmasterstore.com/size/small-metal-sheds
We assembled them ourselves - it is a 2 ”man” job, in other words it would be difficult to construct with nobody else there to hold bits together while screws are inserted - but they do the job and don’t require any maintenance.

OneArepa · 14/02/2023 15:12

@BlueHexagon that looks wonderful and well made, too. Thank you! I’ve been tearing my hair out. Price is higher than we’re hoping for but we may not end up with much choice.

OneArepa · 14/02/2023 15:12

@MyfavouriteisA I saw those but sadly too wide still!

OneArepa · 14/02/2023 15:13

@SirVixofVixHall no reason why not but I’ve not managed to find any with the access being on the short side and still narrow enough.

Just buy the wood and build one.

Crazymadchickenlady · 14/02/2023 15:18

Think ours was about £900 but was bigger than you want and had a window and double door

Loveskipping · 14/02/2023 15:21

How about this one

Loveskipping · 14/02/2023 15:23

This is 3ft but the door is on the short side

KimMG · 15/02/2023 08:28

Here's the company who custom designed our shed -

Hope that helps !

Did they need to be attached to the ground in some way?

MyfavouriteisA · 15/02/2023 09:36

BatsPigeonsRatsSquirrels no, they just sit on the ground - ours are on block paving. They are sturdy enough with padlocks on the doors, but are almost light enough to move (if empty) to deal with fence repairs behind, or weed removal, for example. We’ve deliberately hemmed ours in between a wall, greenhouse and fence panels so a burglar could not simply lift them up over the contents to steal our bikes and other contents.
