gas hob not igniting - who to call ???

Dumdidums · 07/02/2023 07:20

I have a basic question. When i press the ignition button on my gas hob none of the rings are lighting. Should i be calling a gas registered engineer or an electrician to fix it
Im assuming the ignition button has nothing to do with the gas but im wondering if only a gas safe registered person can do work o a gas hob ??

Before calling anyone, try the hob manual (yes, they’re all on the internet) and/or YouTube.

ReignBeauDash · 07/02/2023 07:23

Is the ignition button actually creating a spark?

ReignBeauDash · 07/02/2023 07:24

Can you light a hob ring with a lighter?

ProbablyRomanticised · 07/02/2023 07:24

I'd buy a box of matches as a first port of call

Before calling anyone, try the hob manual (yes, they’re all on the internet) and/or YouTube.

You could just ignore it and use a cooker lighter.

It's probably the battery in the ignition unit needs replacing. They last for years. Find out where it is and replace it. Until then use matches or a lighter. If there's no gas coming through and it won't light then you need an engineer.

Worldgonecrazy · 07/02/2023 07:27

Probably cheaper to buy a hob lighter if it’s just one ring not lighting. If it’s all of them check power source - there may be a wall fuse spur near the hob if your hob is a stand alone hob, check this too by swapping with a new fuse.

Gas hobs have a safety feature meaning they won't ignite when the glass top is down. There should be a button (or similar) which pushes down when the glass top is raised. Check this, because mine was a bit dodgy and I had to fiddle about with it.

I realise the above may not make sense. I've just woken up and probably gibbering Blush

takemebacktothe1990s · 07/02/2023 07:28

Just to add to the above, the spark was lighting on my cooker. If yours isn't working then ignore my advice!

Dumdidums · 07/02/2023 07:58

Hello thanks for the messages

i. There is no spark at all in any of the four rings
ii. I am going to buy a lighter today but im not sure if this is a safe long term solution
iii. It is a debut my new world hob but i dont have the instruction manual for it
iv. I dont have a glass top on it at all

I would just buy a lighter (actually I have, because my hob sometimes does this).;

LastOfTheChristmasWine · 07/02/2023 08:03

Using a lighter is perfectly safe long term. It's really no different to pressing the separate lighter ignition button (unless you have one which automatically ignites when you turn it on, in which case it's just a return to the older types).

The only real danger is leaving the gas on and not ignited, but that's easy to do on most fully functioning gas hobs anyway

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/02/2023 08:03

Btw it is not a safety issue at all.

ShellsOnTheBeach · 07/02/2023 08:03

Most manuals can be found online

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2023 08:07

Get a clicker rather than a lighter. It just creates the spark so it never runs out, unlike a lighter. Also the handle is long, keeps your fingers out of the way!

Does the job click when you try to light it?
If not then it's a fuse or a battery. Mine plugged in behind the cupboard- I didn't even realise.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/02/2023 08:08

Give the bit where the flames normally come out a quick vacuum to remove any soot from the jets.

PieonaBarm · 07/02/2023 08:09

My Dad has used a lighter on his for about 25 years. My Grandma even used one on her gas fire (she did have it serviced so we knew it was safe). Wouldn't advise lighting a fag off the fire like she used to though..... (she did live until well into her 80's - and it wasn't her gas fire antics that finished her off!)

larchforest · 07/02/2023 08:10

If there is no spark at all and the cooker isn't wired into the mains, then it is the battery. Our last cooker had a clip thing holding the battery underneath, between the bottom of the oven and the floor at the front. You should be able to look it up online.

SantaBakula · 07/02/2023 08:19

Do you know if it has a battery to power the ignition , my very old cooker uses a C battery located in the bottom bit of the oven where you store your roasting tins food warmer . mine packed in a while ago , the wires became damaged probably due to me shoving things in willy nilly .

I now use a cooker lighter ( about £1 from wilkos ) and have been doing for years with no safety issues at all

Dumdidums · 07/02/2023 08:34

Im very rubbish at this, i have been looking for the manual online but havent been able to find it. There are two plugs. I assume one is the hob and one is the oven but both are switched on and there is no spark at all to any of the 4 rings. Would i somehow have to remove the front panel to get to the battery or are you suggesting the fuse in the plug may have blown ?

can you send me a link to a clicker ? i have ordered a lighter from click and collect which i will go get soon but the clicker sounds better long term

@Dumdidums one of these things is what you need: www.amazon.co.uk/gas-lighters-cookers/s?k=gas+lighters+for+cookers

Ducksurprise · 07/02/2023 08:50

It the other plug (that is turned off) the oven? Does the oven work? If so can you plug the hob into the oven plug

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 07/02/2023 08:53

Change the fuse in the plug - this happened to mine and it is the easiest and cheapest fix you could wish to come across.

LoveMAFS · 07/02/2023 08:58

Try a box of matches rather than forking out for a clicker. Next, give the spark heads a good clean. If they've had a build-up of grease/fat around them they stop working. Clean them thoroughly, let them dry thoroughly and you'll find they start sparking again.
