Fridge freezer in dining room

Plantmoretrees86 · 05/02/2023 07:21

Our flat only has a small under counter fridge in the kitchen and we desperately need more fridge space and a freezer. No garage. I was thinking of getting a tall, nice looking (ie not plain white) one and putting it in the corner of the dining room - which is right next to the kitchen. DH thinks this will look terrible and put off buyers when we come to sell, probably in the next couple of years.

He definitely has a point but short of a full kitchen remodel, which we can't afford, I don't know what else to do. I'm heading back to work soon after mat leave and really want more fridge space and especially a freezer to be able to batch cook meals.

Would this massively put you off? While it's not going to win any interior awards, I honestly don't think it would look terrible... But maybe I'm just biased in my desperation!

It would probably put me off because it would highlight the lack of space in the kitchen.

PotKettel · 05/02/2023 07:25

Yes it would put me off a house too. Do you have a garage? We have a second fridge freezer in the garage.

If you’re not planning to sell for a couple of years, get a fairly cheap one. It’ll make your life so much easier now. When you come to sell get rid of it - because it does say this house has a tiny kitchen.

Lemmeparticipate · 05/02/2023 07:26

Buy it and use it. When you go to sell, empty it and put it in storage for the few weeks the house is on show for.

If you had concrete plans to sell in the next 6 MTHS that would be different, but a few years is quite a long time to be inconvenienced.

Keepyourmummysboys · 05/02/2023 07:26

Yes, of course, but you can remove it if you wish to sell.

Frenchfancy · 05/02/2023 07:26

It's not fitted in, so just remove it when it is time to sell.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/02/2023 07:26

Get it.
Then remove it when you are actually trying to sell.

Really... wants the point of living your life now with inconvenience fir a maybe in a couple of years?

This. I'd just buy a cheap one and get rid when it's time to sell.

I once did something similar but the dining area was an offshoot from the kitchen - so still all within one large room really.

FenghuangHoyan · 05/02/2023 07:29

What others have said. Bear in mind though that it's going to be a bit noisy at times and will probably mark your carpet.

SnarkyBag · 05/02/2023 07:30

I would buy one for now and then ask someone to store it should the time come to put your house on the market. You need to be able function in your home for the next couple of years not worry about how it would look to buyers that don’t exist yet!

Lcb123 · 05/02/2023 07:32

as a buyer it wouldn’t put me off but it would reinforce that the kitchen is small. As others said, buy one then get rid of you do sell

SaltnPeppaPig · 05/02/2023 07:36

I'd much prefer it in the dining room than the garage as a buyer!

My chest freezer is in my dining room now and it works really well. In my old house, it had to be in the garage and it was so inconvenient, even with access directly from the kitchen back door.

lowclouds · 05/02/2023 07:36

As PP have said... fridges aren't fixed in place. You're not actually changing any fixtures/ fittings here. Just get rid of it before you sell!

cigarettesNalcohol · 05/02/2023 07:36

What about building a built in storage system in the dining room that you can hide the fridge in ?

TrinnySmith · 05/02/2023 07:42

Can you get a cheap reconditioned one and chuck it when you move.

Plantmoretrees86 · 05/02/2023 07:59

Thank you - you're right, it could definitely be removed when we come to sell. So that's probably the best solution. Wooden floors so no issue with marking carpets. No garage unfortunately!

Yes, get one now.

Remove it before you sell.

You can get lots of 'wraps' to disguise a fridge freezer.

Just get the fridge. It's not like you're making permanent changes to your home which would put buyers off. it's just an appliance which can be unplugged and moved around when you need to. Two years is a long time to go without.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/02/2023 13:23

we did this in our flat. When we came to sell, we ripped out a single cupboard in the kitchen to put an under counter freezer in and got rid of the tall one in the dining room.

They are not fixed in place. If you need one, get one. If you come to sell, just remove it, storage or sell or to a family members house until you've moved.

TwoMonthsOff · 05/02/2023 13:37

those wraps are hideous and would draw more attention to it, especially the phone box.

How does it keep working in winter? Mine goes off when it's too cold?

This. Simples.

The Beko one is very good value.

Do you want it to be a freezer only, or a combo fridge freezer. ?

CottonSock · 05/02/2023 14:49

I'd get a cheap or second hand one and get rid when you try to sell.
