How high is your TV on media wall

Hello all,

So I've bought a 65 inch TV and was going to go a media wall with an electric fireplace below but now having second thoughts about how high the TV will feel.

Anybody got a 65 inch with a fireplace below and can guide me to how high your TV sits and if it bothers your neck!!

My dimensions I've worked out are:

25cm off floor until fireplace
540cm for fireplace
20cm clearance until TV
81cm TV height

Which makes me crane my neck!!

Thanks in advance

I've got a 55" and there's 110cm from the floor to the bottom of the tv. I find it fine at that height, no issues.

DustyMaiden · 23/01/2023 19:59

Bottom of tv 1m from floor. But my sofa is very low. Sit down see how it feels.

RewildingAmbridge · 23/01/2023 19:59

How far away is the sofa? Friends of ours have a giant TV at that height on the wall in a relatively small room if we go there and watch a film etc I always end up with neck ache, which I don't think I would if it wasn't so close.
I can't really compare it though as we have a bigger room but a 32 inch TV on a unit so it sits roughly at eye level from the sofa.

RewildingAmbridge · 23/01/2023 20:00

Also are you sure your fireplace is only 54cm?

kegofcoffee · 23/01/2023 20:02

540cm fireplace? Should that be 140? Or 54cm?

It'll also depend on how far away from the TV you're sitting. Further way less it'll strain your neck.

Our TV is 80cm off the floor, there are 2.8 meters from the tv to the edge of the sofa.

And I wouldn't want it to me much higher, definitely not any higher than 1 meter.

parietal · 23/01/2023 22:32

on a low stand about 40 cm from the floor. wouldn't want it any higher.

can you put the TV beside the fireplace? Or even scrap the fireplace and just have 'fire mode' on the TV that shows a nice glowing fire?

Glasgowgal2 · 24/01/2023 10:11

Hi sorry that should have read 54cm for the fireplace height. Sofa is about 280cm away from where the TV wall will go, armchair slightly closer. Something like these images for more clarity

@kegofcoffee I think 80cm seems about right. My eye level is around the 91cm mark. So anything above 80 and I start to feel I'm looking up. Can I ask to see a pic of yours up plz thanks

Ours is very high, people on DIYnot kept saying we would get achy necks. No problems so far, don't even notice it, but we're quite far away from the tv (3.5 m). I did check acceptable guidelines and this just fits within the 15 degree rule, so as long as you're there I don't think you would have any problems.

Sit on your sofa and find a place where your eyes rest and then mark it. That's what we did. We coudn't possibly have a TV over the fireplace as it would be far to high and not only that - it looks chavvy

Furries · 24/01/2023 12:39

My tv is 55”, but the frame adds to the dimensions. It’s 160cm from floor to the bottom of the frame. My sofa is around 3 metres away. No problem at all with viewing, never get a strained neck, have never thought about it really until seeing this thread.

Excuse the mirror reflection, am partway through decorating.

And I’ll embrace being “chavvy”, am fully aware of the MN hate for tv and fireplace in the same sentence 🤣

Furries · 24/01/2023 12:43

Wrong photo, apologies. That one was taken when I was sitting on the floor, makes it look higher than it is when viewing. Meant to attach this one.

I'm with you there! Personally I like a big TV, and certainly in my lounge it would look ridiculous on a stand/unit. I furnish my house in a way that's practical for me, seeing as you know, I'm the one that will be using it! Plus it's safer up there with young children about... and no handprints!

weemouse · 24/01/2023 14:02

So it's on a normal wall, above a normal fireplace.

Not an insta "media wall"

sorry, that term makes me squirm when it's applied in a normal suburban house

LibertyLily · 24/01/2023 14:29

Our TV is a 65". It's on a vintage sideboard that is 78cm high. We have our sofa (where DH sits about 2.3m away from the screen) on the longer wall at right angles to it, whilst I have a love seat/large armchair opposite the TV that's approximately 3.5m away - see attached pic.

Neither of us have any issues with the height or distance - it's a huge improvement on our previous (40") TV.

Our fireplace is at the other end of the room and has a very tall (original) surround, so it would be impossible to put the TV above it....although I'm not a fan of TVs over fireplaces anyway.

Did I miss your point other than you don't like the term media wall? That's what it's called, whether one likes it or not. So yes. A normal wall. With a linear electric fireplace. And a TV above it. A media wall.

Thought my post was pretty clear in looking for advice on TV height rather than opinions on whether one thinks it's chavvy or likes the term 🤷🏾‍♀️

Thanks to those responding with productive and helpful replies.

Hi OP- mine is v similar to your second picture. Will measure it later for you. However, angle and distance from TV are as important as just height, so the further away you are, the higher it can be.

one word of warning- you may need to heat proof the wall around the fire because otherwise the fire can make the wall very hot and it doesn’t do the tv much good. That said, ours is gas so has a chimney going up behind the tv so possibly that’s why it’s an issue. Just flagging it.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 24/01/2023 15:44

What is a media wall? I'm guessing more than a walk with a tv on it as that's only one thing

Ooh thanks illiterato any measurements and/or pics would be great. I've purchased a TV bracket that apparently does the following:

'This universal TV wall bracket comes with a -15°/+5° tilt, +/-60°swivel (max. swivel angle depends on TV size) and +/-3°level adjust for maximum viewing flexibility and customize your special viewing experience.'

So hopefully some leeway with that!

Hey it's when there is a wooden frame built out to accomodate a fire, TV, soundbar, your bits and bobs (router/sky box etc). Some people have alcoves built in as part of the frame also.

Been there done that. Just moved house so aiming for a streamlined look. See how long it lasts! May be streamlined but with a neck brace 🙈

I have a large footstool, so generally always watch TV with my feet up and slouched back. My head is then generally tilted upwards anyway, perhaps that's why I've never noticed a problem? I don't sit bolt upright like I would at the cinema, so my sight line is angled.

illiterato · 25/01/2023 11:04

Right- so its 22cm from the floor to the bottom of the fire and then the fire is 46cm high and then there's another 35cm to the bottom of the TV. I think the swing bracket is a good idea. Ours is flush to the wall (slight recess that it sits in) but I'm not sure the wall will hold it if we swung it out because it's an actual chimney breast rather than a custom designed media wall. Basically, ours is probably not an optimal design in terms of fire vs TV. Also if we wanted a smaller TV it would be annoying because of the recess.
