What F&B for creamy off white?

All-white looks too bright.

Wimborne White (my fave in theory) is showing up a bizarre lemony colour?

Wevet is the nicest, but is described as a grey and I am definitely sick of grey!

Have painters coming as a team to do a builder's paint (two mist coats and one last finish plus woodwork) on entire house, ceilings walls woodwork, they are priced in to get in, get round and get out, so I would like a nice off white that will look bright and fresh for us to move in to, then I can go round painting or wallpapering with more adventurous choices. Been a long and unbelievably expensive reno and I'm just dying to get it finished tbh.

Had Cornforth White, Ammonite, Elephant's Breath, Oval Room Blue, Hague Blue, Treron, Stiffkey Blue, Inchyra Blue, De Nimes, Slipper Satin, and Strong White in various rooms in my life (yes I have moved and painted a lot, inc furniture) how can this be so hard?!

I’ve used Pointing in 3 different spaces facing 3 different directions and I think it’s a good all round off white for all of them without being too yellow or too grey.

PuppaDontPreach · 22/01/2023 22:12

Wimbourne white is the main white in my house. It’s not lemon at all. Have you got a tester?

cashmerecardigans · 22/01/2023 22:13

Second vote for Pointing, it's lovely

LemonSwan · 22/01/2023 22:16

Ooo I just bought the full book and spent the last few hours staring at it.

Go to the weird column, the one with cord, matchstick etc.

These whites look super weird in the chart but when you have a big sample of them they are actually lovely.

New white is very lovely.

Sparklingblah · 22/01/2023 22:19

Yes to the Wimborne White, I have a tester. I can't paint the tester on the newly plastered wall, needs mist coated etc. I had painted it on the wall previously (before all the old plaster was hacked off) and used the remnants of that on paper today but it is now quite an old tester so it might have been a bit discoloured.

Going to go to B&Q tomorrow to get ALL the testers, a new WW, pointing, new white and also a bit of plasterboard to paint it on.

Yes and if the whole house must buy the book!

I too had to do a whole house and been making mistakes room by room for the last six months. Recently just decided sick of it, getting both the book and the archive fan. Best I have ever made.

LemonSwan · 22/01/2023 22:20

Should say best decision ever made 🤣

And so good because you can take the big swatches and layer them, combine them, play with them to make schemes. Add your fabrics etc.

Sparklingblah · 22/01/2023 22:21

I also really love Treron, it's both a colour and super neutral (I have cabinets and a coffee table painted with it, seems to go with everything and everywhere) and will use that to paint the tongue and groove panelling in two bathrooms.

Which book is it? I have the big heavy fan of all the colours, is that what you mean?

I know you only mentioned F&B but my other favourite on par with Pointing is Dulux Almond White. If you can’t find a F&B shade that suits.

AnnaBegins · 22/01/2023 22:22

Pointing definitely! It's surprisingly warm!

Its a5 painted in a ring binder so you can take the swatches out and layer them/ isolate them/ stick to wall with double side masking etc.

Sparklingblah · 22/01/2023 22:23

God no I am grateful for all recommendations apart from Dulux Timeless because I have used the latter in two houses and once it was gorgeous and the other hideous, so it is off my list now.

OMG!

That is to the ringbinder! Wow, 99 quid though!

Why was it hideous ? Before I make a mistake!

LemonSwan · 22/01/2023 22:25

My mistakes were getting very expensive so investment well made for me.

Used to live east/west facing and had my colour palettes down.

Here is north south with double aspect and lot of green, purple filtered light from different trees, plus blue from north, warm from south and it’s blown my mind!

Really feel confidence now in moving forward.

Helloits2023 · 22/01/2023 22:28

Have you tried Dimity? Maybe more creamy that you’re looking for but I think it’s gorgeous

GardensandGrandDesigns · 22/01/2023 22:28

School house white!

paintitallover · 22/01/2023 22:33

Pointing looks very much like modern magnolia to me.

LemonSwan · 22/01/2023 22:33

School house white is what my bedroom is painted in! Problem is the ceiling is still builders white so it’s looking really grungy green. Is a look but not the one I was going for.

That’s what I have been starring at for the last few hours. Put it against James white and it almost starts to become pink. Next to a bright sharp blue like Ground Blue and it’s becomes light grey.

It’s super interesting (well for me anyway 🤓)

So yes look also at the ceiling!

pelargoniums · 22/01/2023 22:35

Yes, I had Pointing in a north facing room and it was indistinguishable from landlord magnolia.

Sparklingblah · 22/01/2023 22:40

Oh God.

This is my final move and is a detached house (first EVER) and thus has north south east west ALL the aspects.

Timeless worked for me in North facing house, very bad in south facing looked almost magnolia.

Def here to avoid magnolia.

Okay come at me with your continued Thoughts, I am going to bed but very grateful for this, my most successful thread ever I should think.

I will report back!

Our last house was Pointing throughout, and it looked wonderful as a warm white backdrop for a lot of art on the walls. Nothing like magnolia. Wouldn’t work at all in this house.

UWhatNow · 22/01/2023 22:41

We’ve got Winbourne White in a very large lounge. I know what you mean about the lemon hue but on a grand scale, and especially in twilight, it’s a beautiful creamy white.
