Cost to remove gas fire and install wood burner

I'm buying a house which used to have a coal fire (it has a chimney). There's currently an ugly gas fire there - I'd love to get rid of it and replace it with a wood burner. Assuming the chimney still works, how much do you think it will cost?

The house is from the 1960s so any suggestions on how to do it sympathetically with the house are also gratefully received!
Thanks

Shop around. We had a first quote for supply and install of a cylinder stove with a slate hearth in corner of room with flue going through attic of our bungalow. Quote was £5500. Went with another installer of the same stove but just had to purchase the stove and flue system ourselves (installer told us what to get) and installer sourced granite hearth. £2600 all in. Was due to be installed 10 days ago, but stove supply issues mean it’s not due to arrive for a couple of weeks yet….can’t wait!!!

inloveandmarried · 22/01/2023 00:15

Ours was a similar 1960's set up. The opening had to be widened as 1960's are often small openings, but this wasn't a hard job.

Stove £1,200
Fitting £800 including building works, new lintel and plastering the chimney breast.

Liner and brick slip cladding approx £600

Surround and hearth £900

About £3,500 all in plus VAT

Yes please reconsider - wood burners produce more pollution than cars, even the new eco stoves still produce PM2.5 emissions and are more polluting than a HGV.

kitcat15 · 22/01/2023 00:48

£4k

Changingmynameyetagain · 22/01/2023 01:01

We paid about £2500 for ours including the stove, slate hearth, oak beam lintel, linings and labour.
We had a local gas safe engineer out to remove the old fire and cap it off, I think he charged us £75.
I love ours, it’s very efficient and warms nearly our whole downstairs.

CallieQ · 22/01/2023 01:11

I'm having a similar job done and it's costing 2k plus

Mossball · 22/01/2023 08:20

We paid £2k but gas fire had already been removed. We didn't need any building works done but due to the size of the fireplace have ended up with a small wood burner which made it cheaper. To be fair the little wood burner kicks out some heat and makes a real difference in our living room which is a fair size at 18 x 22 feet.

Beach1983 · 22/01/2023 08:24

We’ve just had one installed and was £3k for stove, liner, hearth and wooden beam however there was no fireplace to remove as it had already been removed and boxed out so that saved some £.

Really bad idea - they're terrible for your health and the environment.

It will be in 4 figures. You will need a corgi person to decommission the gas fire, then a builder to rebuild/make good/plaster the hole in the chimney breast. You will probably need to install a full hearth too. A hetas engineer to line your chimney with the right flue and install the stove. Then some painting and decorating.

Most places that sell wood burners do all the work as part of the installation.
We had a gas fire and marble fireplace removed, the opening enlarged and lined, all plaster work done, a new hearth laid, oak mantle installed and of course a wood burner. Paid about £4K 6 years ago. (i think the fire was about 1K)
Before and after photo - a bit blurry 😂

This. Ours also gave me a terrible headache. Severely regret getting it and it was unused for years until we sold .

So are gas fires.

TiredandLate · 22/01/2023 08:37

I've had a quote of £900 to sweep and line the chimney, and install the burner. He advised don't pay less than £750 for the burner and said good refurbished second hand ones are worth a look. Just need a quote for removal of the gas fire so around £2-2500 depending which burner we buy.

As the write of that article said at the beginning, they were burning unseasoned wood. Unsubstantiated biased articles like this do people who are agains wood burners no favours.

Perhaps this is a more reliable source

amp.theguardian.com/environment/2022/feb/15/wood-burners-emit-more-particle-pollution-than-traffic-uk-data-shows

Wood burning fires are adding pollution

Homes with log burner have much more pollution indoors than those without

Uk wood burners emit more particulates than all the traffic in the uk

Wood burners are causing cancers

RidingMyBike · 22/01/2023 08:54

Exactly. My household includes a child and someone with a lung condition. There is no way we're living with a wood burning stove and it put us off buying several houses which had them as 'features'.

cashmerecardigans · 22/01/2023 08:55

We did exactly this last year. Cost us 3.5k, including chimney lining and new hearth. We could have done it a bit cheaper, we had cheaper stove options, so probably could have come in at 3k. It's been a blessing this winter

cashmerecardigans · 22/01/2023 08:56

Just to add, we kept existing mantle and didn't change the size of the opening, so that probably helped keep it below some of those mentioned above

purpledalmation · 22/01/2023 08:59

There's talk of banning them as they are now proven to contribute to air pollution, inside and outside the home. So look into this aspect before spending all this money.

CoffeeInTheClouds · 22/01/2023 09:00

We had our second wood burner fitted just before Christmas. Removal of gas fire, burner, flue and fitting cost £2,500. We also had to get the chimney swept before installation...£75 for two chimneys.

Our wood burners are game changers for us, especially when it is so cold (and our central heating bills reach £25 per day)!

It is worth mentioning that there is currently a supply issue. We ordered ours in September, and installation was December.

justasking111 · 21/01/2023 23:40

Not the new ones which are so efficient. Our old one at last house on the other hand freestanding was a dirty beast

This is not true. All the wood burners in the UK create more pollution than all the cars.

purpledalmation · 22/01/2023 09:01

Look at a heat pump instead.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 22/01/2023 09:03

Unless you have a large room, a stove takes up a lot of space. They get very hot ( yes, I realise that is the point) which can be quite dangerous to children and pets if they touch them.

We have an ‘ insert’ instead, which fits into the space where the gas fire was. It uses the existing hearth and didn’t need a liner. It isn’t quite as hot as a stove ( we have had three) but it gives a very nice warmth and is much better in the room, especially in the summer when you are not using it.

the one below is the sort of thing, ignore the surround, it is just the stove you buy

Another vote for please reconsider, terrible for environment and air quality inside the home. There are other ways to heat your home. Perhaps it'd be different if you were in a forest in Sweden, unconnected to gas and electricity.

Girlintheframe · 22/01/2023 09:06

We took our our gas fire and got a stove fitted in October last year.
