Shower behind bath - any disadvantages?

Like the attached photo.

We have a long, narrow bit of roof space and we’re thinking of installing a bathroom. Initially thought we could either have just a shower or shower over bath but what about a shower behind the bath? Bath will be for occasional use but would be very nice to have.
A shower extending the length of the bath (170 x 100 cm) would we be a lovely size and would be used daily.

I assume you mean a shower In front of the bath? Otherwise you would have to climb over the bath to get the shower.

Assuming that is the case, I think the bath is going to get soapy/dirty water splashed into when you have shower, so you would have to clean/rinse it as well as the shower after use. So it's not good from my perspective.

(And it looks odd!)

whatthebejesus · 18/01/2023 20:01

I really like it! Agree with a PP about having to wipe the bath out often but it that's the only bathroom you have which could have a bath in it then I'd definitely do it. It makes great use of that room

iwantabreakfastpantry · 18/01/2023 20:37

Yes, I meant shower in front of bath

Agree, the appearance is novel but have had look on insta and there are some very nice ones on there so I am coming round to the idea, plus it would just be my husband and me using it.

I did think about the bath getting splashed but it should be possible to put a shower screen (not full length obvs) between the shower and the tub.

If you have a similarly sized space to that picture I think I’d prefer the shower and bath to be end on and next to each other rather than side on and one in front.

Honeyroar · 18/01/2023 20:56

That’s been normal in quite a few hotels that I’ve stayed in. Works well, apart from you end up cleaning the bath out after a shower too.

AdelaideRo · 18/01/2023 20:58

i've been thinking about doing something similar. I like to have a lazy bath but then I tend to shower afterwards. The layout would help make that work!

That’s how I started out initially but it uses a lot more of the length of the room, IYSWIM and it seemed a shame to eat into the length of the room for a bath I only use occasionally.
We want to have the loo in a separate room to the main bathroom so it’s more flexible to use in the morning (my husband take a long time on the loo and in the shower!)

That’s good to know re: hotels. Do you think. Short shower screen between the bath and shower would have worked we?

Here’s nice one I saw on insta with a more open shower but I think it could be screened off more to not flood the rest of the bathroom

It might look best if you had no shower tray but a seemless tiled wet room floor. I wouldn't mind the bath getting a bit wet if you shower, I'd be more worried about the window if the shower was right in front of it next to the bath so I prefer op's plan.

Yes possibly, although it would kind of destroy the “openness”. Most hotels had a glass screen between the loo/shower area as it was (and a glass wall into the bedroom too, so there were already two glass screens as it was. We think it’s not a big deal to swill the tub
out.

The second one you’ve posted looks like it needs a normal shower enclosure IMO.

Happydays321 · 18/01/2023 22:09

I'd get a water softener so if you dont wipe the bath it doesn't get hard water stains on it.

iwantabreakfastpantry · 18/01/2023 22:11

I agree @NellyBarney and @Honeyroar about the second pic needing to have either a larger shower tray or more of a wet room area with same tiles throughout the bath shower section. Should have said it was an example of how it can look quite nice with the right tiles/fixtures/colour combo.

Good suggestion, thanks, will note that!

I like the first picture, it’s what I wanted until I measured the bathroom and realised it’s impossible unless I knocked into next door’s house..

I think it would look odd with a bath screen though, but the bath getting wet wouldn’t bother me too much. Having to wipe down an additional screen and clean around the corners/fixings would be more annoying.

SophieLaGeroff · 18/01/2023 23:03

I think it looks silly and crammed in. Either is like in the first picture where the bathroom would have a much nicer, spacious feel to just have a shower above the bath, or if you have a big bathroom just have them more separate.

What's the advantage unless you've got mobility issues stepping into a bath?

Why not just get a nice big bath with the shower over?

C4tastrophe · 19/01/2023 07:19

If you already have an existing bathroom, and this is a second bathroom, I’d go for a shower only.
You don’t need 2 rarely used baths. What are the chances they’d both be in use at once?

This.

I really don't see the advantage of semi-separating them.

EyesOnThePies · 19/01/2023 07:43

As someone who always showers and never baths, a shower over a bath is never as good. More cramped and awkward.

Looks a good solution to me OP.

QueenOfWeeds · 19/01/2023 07:47

Also stayed in a hotel with this set up, and DH and I really liked it - definitely considering it when we redo our bathroom. Think carefully about towel storage/placement though - the hotel had a deep windowsill far enough away from shower spray, but where you could reach towels from the shower or bath.

Feelingmehmehmeh · 19/01/2023 07:55

i love this! If our bathroom had been bigger I’d have done this.

iwantabreakfastpantry · 19/01/2023 09:34

Good to hear from those that have had experience of this type of layout!

To PPs who suggested shower over the bath - I would much rather have them separate and have a very large walk-in shower, which is too much of a compromise. I am not keen on the combined version unless it really is the only way, it would feel I like I have regressed back to the time I lived in a flat.

Re: bath getting splashed - I suppose it wouldn’t be arduous to give it a 2 second rinse down with the shower before getting out. We would have definitely have a detachable shower hose not just one fixed to to wall/ceiling.

We will have another bath in the main family bathroom, which would be on the floor below ours (we have a three storey house), but would like our master bathroom to be a sanctuary (even if small), rather than having to use the teenagers’ bath that will no doubt be state and not remotely relaxing!

OP posts:
iwantabreakfastpantry · 19/01/2023 09:55

My first para doesn’t make sense! The too much of a compromise is in reference to the combined shower-bath, not the large walk-in shower

We had one and had loads of problems with leaks. It’s “worse” than a normal wet room because there is just that extra factor of the bath panel being properly sealed in. It obviously does work though if done properly and I liked that we still had a bath and that it was all very easy to clean.

MaggieFS · 19/01/2023 11:39

I think your first picture looks like a really good use of space to still have a large shower and a bath.

So what if the bath gets wet? As pp said, have a water softener, give it a hose off, and you'll be fine.

One thing though, we had a screen like that when we moved in and SO MUCH water came past it. You need a deeper screen.
