Clear glass splashback over tiles?

NotMyFIrstTIme · 17/01/2023 00:24

Has anyone had a clear glass splashback fitted over tiles and if so, did you have any problems with it or regret it?

This will be new tiling (new kitchen) and I'm thinking of doing this so I can have the look of tiles all around and yet still have the easy-cleaning convenience of glass behind the hob.

I am interested to hear about this too. I am hoping to do the same because I love the tiles we've chosen.

TizerorFizz · 17/01/2023 08:12

Hmm. Not for me. Why can’t you just clean the tiles? Personally I prefer the worktop extended up behind the hob. Have an upstand all around, a bigger section behind the hob, and then paint the walls above the upstand with washable paint. Lots cheaper, better looking, and you don’t need tiles at all.

Tiles/grout is dated in my view in a kitchen. Glass over isn’t attractive. How do you clean the edge of the glass and how do you hide it’s raw edges on top of the tiles? That’s not a sleek look.

I hate our glass splash back with a passion

I really dislike the black one I inherited when we moved to this house!

Love mine because I'm lazy however don't like grouting behind the hob. I don't think you'll notice it to be honest. Life's too short to be scrubbing grouting

LibertyLily · 17/01/2023 11:54

I've never heard of glass over tiles.

We have tempered glass over a favourite wallpaper behind our hob and sink - it gives us the injection of pattern we wanted but is easy to wipe clean. If we ever get tired of the pattern it's much easier - and far less expensive - to change than tiles!

PaulRobinsonsSeventhWife · 17/01/2023 11:56

Tiles behind mean you'll be scrubbing cooking stains out of the grout regularly, glass is much easier to clean but I've not seen the glass over tiles before.

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/01/2023 11:58

@LibertyLily I’ve never heard of this but will be storing in my brain for when I get to do the kitchen! What a great idea. Where did you have to go to get the right glass?

Why couldn't I just clean the tiles? Because I'd much rather not have to add frequent grout-cleaning to my list of things to do given how much I hate housework ;) I enjoy the results, not the process!
I've lived with a kitchen with an upstand for over 5 years now, and I wouldn't have one again: I prefer the look of a single surface.
As for cleaning the edges of the glass? Exactly the same way you clean the edges of any other other glass splashback if you have an upstand, where the splashback will be proud of the wall above the upstand.

I had white tiles behind my job and the grout didn't get any dirtier than the tiles. I'm in the middle of a kitchen refurb and am going with tiles again, I'm useless at cleaning glass !
I don't see why you can't have glass over tiles though.

TizerorFizz · 17/01/2023 12:27

@NotMyFIrstTIme
Have you ever heard of large format tiles? Hardly any grout as they are huge! You need to understand a bit more about modern tiles! I’ve not cleaned grout for decades. Don’t have any in the kitchen.

Defiantlynot41 · 17/01/2023 12:33

I had the clear glass one replaced by tiles. Better a bit of grout cleaning than the sight of horrid teeny tiny flies which found their way behind the glass and couldn't be removed ConfusedEnvy

LynneBenfield · 17/01/2023 12:37

Large format tiles look weird on kitchen walls. Like you’ve got confused between walls and floors or kitchens and bathrooms. Though I’m not a lover of the upstand and paint thing either. It looks smart but it’s not practical in a working kitchen, no matter how ‘scrubbable’ the paint.

spotddog · 17/01/2023 12:43

There is coloured glass that is designed for splash-backs. It comes in white, raspberry, green, blue and yellow. May be available in other colours. It is really easy to maintain and looks sleek. Don't know name but any good kitchen shop should know about it.

Yes, you can get tempered glass for splashbacks in a huge range of colours - you can even get it printed with a design or a photo.

I was going to rhis but someonenom here posted a photo of the problem they had with flies craling behind the glass and dying. So I didn’t do it. Slightly regret it though as our splashback clashes with our tiles 🤦‍♀️

LibertyLily · 17/01/2023 13:21

@NotMyFIrstTIme and @BuffaloCauliflower we ordered the glass from a local glass supplier - think the larger bit (behind a 90cm hob) was around £65 pre covid price rises....

BungleandGeorge · 17/01/2023 13:29

I think it might look a bit odd personally. Tiles are there to protect the area behind the hob and then you put another covering over them?! Glass smears so easily too, I’d probably just go for the tiles unless you’re a very messy cook!

I'll take the fifth on that question 😊

Steam and smears
I’d sooner clean tiles bleach on grout polishing glass to stream free would be harder

minipie · 17/01/2023 14:03

This would be my worry, dust and flies getting behind. You’d need to seal the gap between the tiles and glass very very well. Also the glass will be further forward as sitting on top of tiles, so there will be an edge each side of the glass that will catch dirt a lot I’d have thought.

I think I would have just the tiles and then paint over the grout in some kind of sealant/varnish that makes it super easy to clean.

Slowgrowingelm · 17/01/2023 14:10

I have a copper splash back, with blue tiles on the sides and white grout. Despite having three teens who cook, messily, the tiles don’t seem to attract any food splashes. The copper is really easy to wipe clean.

I think glass would be quite reflective and hide or distort whatever it is you like about the tiles. Why not just get a flat splash back, for the hob, and extend it a bit further on either side of the hob if you’re worried about food?

Roseey · 17/01/2023 14:15

Glass is fine behind a cooker as long as it’s heat proof. I have mirror. It’s very easy to clean.
