Living 4 doors away from woods? Will this be a bit scary?!

We’ve seen a lovely house. It’s fourth from the end of the road then it goes into a narrow unmade road and woods for a good few miles. Lovely for dog walkers etc (we have cats but no dog). I can’t help wondering if I’d feel a bit unsafe, especially if I was on my own at night! There is only one house opposite, although there is a road of houses nearby. DH loves the idea and next door but one has horses in a nearby field. No through traffic except vehicles for the farm a mile or so up. Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience of this? Thanks

Gosh that sounds lovely! Think of all the wildlife you will get in your garden. I’m with dh on this. Plus you do have neighbours so I don’t think the isolation is really an issue.

mumarooni · 12/01/2023 22:51

Sounds much safer than a town to me, but that's gut instinct I know nothing about actual safety stats. You'd want good outdoor bins to prevent foxes etc I should think. And might get lovely wildlife, hedgehogs, deer, owls. Heavenly.

ArcheryAnnie · 12/01/2023 22:53

It sounds like bliss!

SilverCatStripes · 12/01/2023 22:53

My idea of heaven OP!

ChristmasBloomingChristmas · 12/01/2023 22:54

Lovely!

VeniVidiWeeWee · 12/01/2023 22:54

Just watch out for centaurs. And giant spiders.

justasking111 · 12/01/2023 22:55

Lived like this for 20 years, one burglary in the area in all that time. You might have cars parking up to take their dogs for a walk which can be problem if they can't reverse. Otherwise enjoy

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 12/01/2023 22:55

What scares you about living near….trees?

Axolot · 12/01/2023 22:56

Sounds a bit like our road. Only thing we get annoyed about is the dog walkers who drive to the end of the road and leave their car there to walk the dog in the woods. But I never feel unsafe. And we do indeed gets lots of lovely wildlife (and spiders - don't live near a wood if you hate spiders...).

BabyFour2023 · 12/01/2023 22:58

Sounds gorgeous! Our garden backs onto woods and they wrap around us to the left. It’s absolute bliss! A summer morning having a coffee on the garden with various wildlife coming through is lovely. Hearing nothing but the birds singing at night. My DC love seeing foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits & squirrels in the garden. We saw 3 deer last year!

RoseAndGeranium · 12/01/2023 22:58

It sounds like heaven. I still resent DH fir insisting we live in the middle of a village instead of right on the outskirts.

Rachaelrachael · 12/01/2023 22:58

Our last house backed onto woods (through a gate on the back garden) and I was worried before we moved. Once in the house I loved it! Never felt scared and it was lovely listening to all the birds and other wildlife, so peaceful

Honper · 12/01/2023 23:00

I live near an urban wood/nature reserve and we do get a lot of arseholes. Piss heads and junkies fighting, barking dogs, out of control dogs, dog shit and drug dealing mostly with the low level hassle/criminal damage associated. It might be different in the countryside but in a town ime it can be an area with no "eyes on" sort of thing

FeinCuroxiVooz · 12/01/2023 23:01

sounds lovely.
we had an airbnb long weekend in a location like this. it was bliss. didn't occur to me for a moment to be nervous of the woods, it was wonderful to be able to be in proper countryside so close to the front door yet still be in a community rather than an isolated solo house.

UrsulaPandress · 12/01/2023 23:02

In the middle of the night in the dark dark woods …….

As my lovely dad used to read to me every night.

Seriously what are you scared of? I genuinely don’t understand.

purpleme12 · 12/01/2023 23:04

I can see why OP would be scared it's because of all the stories you hear and also in programmes and films sometimes

evemillbank · 12/01/2023 23:04

I'd hate it!

Spudlet · 12/01/2023 23:11

Positive things: wildlife in the garden, peace and quiet, access to lovely walks etc with lots of mental and physical health benefits. And probably quite a nice sense of community with your neighbours.

Potential negative things: you may get doggers (although if there are a few houses that might put them off), people parking badly, people who don’t clean up after their dogs. Potentially wildlife in the house in winter (🐭), and needing to drive every time you need to go to a shop.

But all in all, I’d go for it. I do live in the country already though so it wouldn’t be as big a change for us.

Tarkan · 12/01/2023 23:13

I used to live in a place that backed onto woods/a wildlife area and it was amazing. It was so handy for taking the dog out and then DCs when they were in their pram and I wanted to go for a walk. I used to sit at my window watching various birds and red squirrels.

The only scary moment I ever had was taking the dog out the back for a pee after I'd finished watching a scary movie and an owl hooted in a tree above me, scared the hell out of me. 🤣

Luana1 · 12/01/2023 23:22

It sounds amazing, if you don't decide to go for it can you post a link so I can buy it :)

NewYearNewCareer · 12/01/2023 23:26

Where we moved to has loads of woodland and children are often taken for walks and splash in the shallow rivers, dog walkers love them and they are quite busy places.
Even late at night teens take torches to explore.
The nearest one has lights all winter with different themes, and it’s so peaceful to walk down the paths, even late at night.

I think you’ll love it, once you’ve walked in there .

Netaporter · 12/01/2023 23:26

I live in this sort of setting. It is easer if you create a sense of community with nearby houses (which we have) as in an emergency being isolated can be a bit trickier. I have to be honest, I only settled at night when DH was away after we got a massive dog, cctv and PIR lights (which can cause more issues as every fox, deer or badger sets them off). Truth is, most of the anxiety is driven by things I’ve seen on tv as opposed to anything else. Deffo agree that inconsiderate park users or lazy dog walkers are a pain. Plus deliveries can be tricky (what 3 words will be your most used app) I wouldn’t swap now for all the tea in China.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/01/2023 23:27

I live rurally with woods all around me. It is lovely and feels very safe. No one hangs about here. No one passes my door. It is very dark during the winter as no street lighting but I am used to that now.

Fushiadreams · 12/01/2023 23:31

I have fields on one side and woods on the other, I can’t fathom why you’d think that was an issue. Honestly neighbours are a bigger worry, you can hit lucky or not. But some woods, nah. That’s a positive.

Zodfa · 12/01/2023 23:36

Probably wolves will come into your house and eat you.
