Living 4 doors away from woods? Will this be a bit scary?!

We’ve seen a lovely house. It’s fourth from the end of the road then it goes into a narrow unmade road and woods for a good few miles. Lovely for dog walkers etc (we have cats but no dog). I can’t help wondering if I’d feel a bit unsafe, especially if I was on my own at night! There is only one house opposite, although there is a road of houses nearby. DH loves the idea and next door but one has horses in a nearby field. No through traffic except vehicles for the farm a mile or so up. Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience of this? Thanks

Thanks for the replies so far ... lots of them have give me a giggle! I probably watch too many horror films. Perhaps I'll go and hover around there late at night to listen for any noise. The current vendors have lived there 25 years so I'm guessing it's not too much of a problem.

Samanabanana · 13/01/2023 10:23

We are the house right next to the woods. Not scary at all and I enjoy watching all the good doggos being taken on their walks!

I live in a small hamlet of 4 houses on a hillside with woods next door. It took some adjustment but I love it now. Do it!!

Was there anything specifically you had to adjust to?

Oh, just be aware that you hear some very scary noises.

The first time I heard foxes screaming late at night it frightened the life out of me. If I'd heard that screaming whilst living in a city centre then I'd call the police!

I live in a very gritty area of S London and regularly hear foxes yowling at night. In fact far more often than when I stay with properly rural family.

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/01/2023 10:27

I used to live opposite woodland and it was lovely. The sun set behind the woods and we'd get flickering patterns of the trees on the walls. Sometimes the setting sun would light up the tree tops and turn all the leaves to gold. Then there was the dawn chorus in spring and summer, it was incredible and I've never heard the like elsewhere. If I was on the phone I'd stand at the window and gaze and watch small birds bounce through the air as they crossed the road into the big apple tree in our garden.

Do it, OP!

ThatOneChinHair · 13/01/2023 10:29

I don't understand the scary issue? you would have other houses/people around you, not like in the middle of nowhere.

HashBrownandBeans · 13/01/2023 10:32

We live a few doors down from a wood and back straight on to a nature reserve. At first I hated it at night, had to draw the curtains at dusk, but now I love it. Drawbacks are; lots of dog walkers nicking all the parking, kids doing drugs, that’s it!

Hangupsrus · 13/01/2023 11:22

We live in a detached house without neighbours near to woods and I love it. We have so much wildlife, foxes, hedgehogs, grouse, badgers and even dears, come into our garden. It's peaceful and lovely in summer, and I never feel unsafe, even on nights my dp is away. The town near to us however seems to get a lot of burglaries so 🤷. Go for it op.

unsync · 13/01/2023 13:11

Have you lived rurally before?

SoShallINever · 09/07/2023 17:35

I live at the end of a cul de sac with nothing but woods out the back. Our garden isn't even fenced. Other than the occasional block from the water board (testing the stream) and few local kids making a dam! We've never seen seen anyone out there.
The owls are a noisy nuisance though.

MissGroves · 09/07/2023 17:40

Sounds amazing!! I used to hate the idea of living away from busy town/cities when I couldn't drive but now I would give my right arm to live away from most of civilization!

Festoonedflurryfairy · 09/07/2023 17:46

OK don’t wish to offend anyone but this is my honest opinion having lived in town and country.

If the house is at end of road with woods nearby in a truly rural agricultural area then I think you will be fine! That’s bc anyone unusual will stick out like a sore thumb and everyone will know everyone else.

If the house is at the end of a road with woods in a generally urban area then tbh I wouldn’t go for it bc no one knows anyone else and youth from the town come out and do drug deals etc.

Loobyloo68 · 10/07/2023 16:06

I'm in the middle of a wood, no street lights or neighbours and I love it. I never close the curtains in summer , sit in the garden till late at night, wouldn't swap it !!!

GasPanic · 10/07/2023 16:36

All the mad axemen I have watched on TV have invariably lived in the woods.

Basically in a thick, dark wood anything can hide.

Watching.

Waiting.

Oldnamechangeyetagain · 10/07/2023 19:38

Fly-tipping could be a problem.

You'll need security lights and cameras....

Caradonna · 10/07/2023 19:51

Not if it’s the edge of an urban area. Friends were terrorised by kids at weekends.
Do a recce in the evening. Is there beer cans etc around.

InceyWinceySpidy · 10/07/2023 19:55

I'd get it if you were the only house there, but there's 4 one side of you, and more the other side!

arghtriffid · 10/07/2023 20:03

I love forests and nature but I would not like to live backing onto woodland.

Frightenedbunny · 10/07/2023 20:06

We live on a lane with only 4 houses. We bank direct onto a woods. It’s lovely. We hear the woodpeckers knocking, the owls twit twoo-ing and sometimes have deer on the lane. It’s not spooky at all!

Choccyoclocky · 10/07/2023 20:12

I thought I'd be worried living opposite woods but the wildlife is lovely. All the birds, foxes and deers! I see them all from our window.
Definitely more spiders though which I hate.

inloveonholiday · 10/07/2023 21:01

I live on the very edge of a wood, the trees are part of my garden. It's noisy at dawn, the birds get excited. It sounds beautiful when the wind catches the top branches of the big trees. We get deer in the garden and so many birds. Bats at twilight.

I love living by a wood.

Agapornis · 10/07/2023 21:07

ZOMBIE! (baby zombie) - I'm sure the OP has made a decision on whether to buy the house 6 months on.

@SoShallINever while I appreciate our common interest in loud owls... Why now?

DrCoconut · 10/07/2023 21:26

It sounds nice for a holiday but I wouldn't want to live in the middle of nowhere. I don't particularly think it would be unsafe though, just very isolated and far away from any facilities.

DrCoconut · 10/07/2023 21:28

Oh poo, zombie thread. I'm not fully awake to be fair.

SisyphusDad · 10/07/2023 21:37

Also beware of teddy bears having picnics.
