Bathroom with black taps/shower - yay or nay?!

Hi

I'm having a new bathroom put in and quite like the attached suite. But it's very different to a 'normal' chrome silver tap bathroom. Im wondering it'd it's a bit too crazy?! But I do like it 😬

Buy shares in Vaikal - they will show watermarks terribly.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/01/2023 20:06

I hadn't thought of that! But I think the way they are designed is to stop that but could be wrong. Otherwise I don't think it would be fit for purpose?

Ooo I love that!! Looks so stylish and modern. Can't water mark any worse than chrome surely? I'd love polished brass or black if we re do a bathroom!

Backy · 09/01/2023 20:08

It’s a very popular look and has been for the past couple of years. For that reason, it might feel quite dated in a few years …. Not that it should necessarily bother you if it does!

agree with pp that I think in a hard water area, it would need a lot of cleaning.

crazysausagespart2 · 09/01/2023 20:09

We have black taps etc in one of our bathrooms and have had no issues with water marks. I love the look and it works so well in our bathroom. Go for it!

HanSB · 09/01/2023 20:09

It's a current trend and I like it, very modern and hotel like if you combine with marble hexagonal style tiles!

Jumbojem · 09/01/2023 20:10

I thought matte black taps etc had been "in" for a while now, so not crazy in the slightest!

Nanalisa60 · 09/01/2023 20:11

I really like it, if I was re doing a bathroom I would go for the black.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/01/2023 20:14

I'm less concerned about the water marks. But more about it becoming outdated...but in about 10 years time of slightly less I'll probably replaces the taps anyway. Hopefully the bath/sink etc should still be fine.

I think it looks so contemporary. I'm going to keep it very minimal, so I'm using this colour metro tiles along with white walls. Very simple, hopefully it will look nice!

Oh yes it can…I have black taps and black sink in my kitchen care of my vendors having no sense ….every single drop of water ….aghhhhh….never ever looks clean. And I’m in a soft water area
same as black floors in wet areas - just don’t do it

LynneBenfield · 09/01/2023 20:18

I’m in a hard water area and so it’s a massive NO from me, based on practicality alone.

I also think they look a bit naff, but that’s by the by.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/01/2023 20:18

Lots of cleaning products which work on chrome fittings are too harsh for coloured ones. I love the look, but I couldn't live with the cleaning and if you're in a hard water area, unless you have a softener, you would be mad to do it imo.

Krakenes · 09/01/2023 20:18

Think it depends on where you live (hard water area etc), as we are London and have a black terrazzo sink and it’s a bit of a pain! Also agree with a PP, it’s been popular for a long time now and is starting to date, but if that’s not a factor, then go for it if you like it - you’ll be the one using it! I find the square taps unergonomic and would never personally choose them, or specify them (this is part of my line of work). I’m not keen on the shape of the bath and sink either, but again that’s a personal preference (it reminds me of my parent’s 90s remodel). If you love it, and are going to be living there a long time I would go for it!

BabyFour2023 · 09/01/2023 20:20

Very popular look the last couple of years and is probably on the way out now for brushed brass. One of our en-suites had a black tap when we bought the house and it was horribly discoloured.

Yep. It’s kind of had its day.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/01/2023 20:21

I'm in a hard water area...I think I'll try and find something else 😬 such a shame! But I think it will date and look naff soon. I'd prefer something timeless.

Back to the drawing board!

I have matte black taps and we are in a hard water area. Water marks really haven't been an issue. We've had them for 2 years and they are still looking great.

On the photo you posted of the green tiles, the brass / hol tap looks nice.

FlounderingFruitcake · 09/01/2023 20:23

Maybe it depends on the exact finish but mine don’t show any water marks at all, literally none, even with London hard water. Such a contrast to our other bathroom which is chrome. We put ours in 2020 so not a new idea at all. And as recommended by a PP they are paired with marble hexagons!

Cherryblossom200 · 09/01/2023 20:25

The brass taps look lovely don't they 😊

We’ve got it in both bathrooms 😊 Still love it, had it for a year. We have a freestanding bath with the black taps too. Cleaning wise I’d say it’s actually been easier than our old bathroom as you don’t have to make them shiny!

ISolemnlySwearIAmUpToNoGood · 09/01/2023 20:29

We had a similar black tap in our kitchen and the finish started peeling on the handle

Cinnamonandcoal · 09/01/2023 20:30

I have a black tap and plug, crosswater brand. In London and haven't had much issue with water marks. A little limescale occasionally I chip off.

Whycanineverever · 09/01/2023 20:33

I thought about this but just ended up getting black mirror, shelf and toilet roll holder, soap holder etc but left taps etc chrome.

AndrewGloubermanisaperv · 09/01/2023 20:40

This is ours recently done up and we love it TBH not any harder to keep clean as Matt black
