Buyers remorse

My husband and I just bought a house in London. We’ve moved in and I hate it. And we’ve realised we’ve overpaid by potentially £100,000. The house itself is lovely and it’s in the catchment area for an outstanding school but the street is noisier than I remember and busier with traffic. The neighbourhood is also rougher than I remember. We were looking for a house for so long that we just jumped at a house that was finally nice and had a good primary school nearby and what we were looking for. I feel sick to the stomach thinking about how horrible the area and the street are and can’t stop beating myself up about the fact that I didn’t realise it. Not to mention there is no way someone else would pay this much. So we can’t really afford to sell it.
I don’t know what to do and how to get over it. Maybe someone has been in a similar position and can help share how they overcame this feeling.

Hi OP,

Its been a year since your post and I was wondering if things got better for you?

I ask because I find myself in a remarkably similar situation. DH and I are 28 and have just bought our first home together. I was desperate to move from our previous flat (bad situation with neighbours) and jumped at one of the first houses I saw. The house itself is actually lovely, however the location is incredibly shite. I didn’t know this area of the city very well, and like you the house is on a much busier road than I thought. We have constant traffic and it drives me mad!

Would love to know how your getting on and if it got any better for you.

its definitely gotten better. It’s mostly because I simply settled on a target exit date and accepted that I’m going to have to face some frustrating things till then. Focusing more on what is nice about the inside of the house and life in general. We’ve planted hedges outside and built a wall which has helped. I’ve also focused a lot of energy on making the inside as cozy and warm as possible.

I still have bad days but I can promise you it gets better. Just try and focus on things that are nice and other parts of life!

PS I actually haven’t tried to find the banksy yet!!

Thank you OP. That is reassuring to hear, and making things nice inside and focussing on that is along the lines of what I am trying to do too.

The biggest challenge I am currently facing is that my DH sees this house as our forever home (or at least 10 years he says), where as I'd rather stay here for only 3-5 years and move on. This is making working towards an exit date impossible. I think I just need to give my DH some space and time (we have only been here 2 months) and bring up the conversation in a year or two. We can't move anytime soon due to finances, so no point talking about that now I suppose.

I had the exact same problem. We still have days when he wishes we could just stay. Because the location doesn’t bother him nearly as much as it bothers me. But he’s now seen how much it affects my happiness and it’s a pretty big deal breaker for me. It took us a while to get there and for me to explain over several sessions the impact it has on my health and happiness. You’ll get there! Ultimately they love us and don’t want us unhappy. Finances are secondary to that.

You got two options, suck it up, or suck it up.
