New bathroom cost

NewHopes · 05/01/2023 23:57

Hi all,
Just moved to a house that needs a bit of work doing to it. Just wondering if anyone has recently got a new bathroom, could you please tell me how much it cost? (Including labour costs for it to be installed) Just trying to get a rough idea in my mind so that I can plan whether I'll be able to get it done this year or if I have a bit more saving to do!

Also, would you recommend using a big company (Wickes, Victoria Plumb etc) or independent tradesmen? If using independent traders, do I need to find a plumber and a tiler and an electrician separately or do I find one and they arrange everything themselves? What are the pros and cons of using a big company Vs an independent firm?
Thanks!

It’s dependent on size, location, whether you’re moving fittings around or keeping existing location, quality of fittings, quality of tiles, whether a rewire is required.

it’s a how long is a piece of string question.

My large en-suite bathroom was £14k. It does have decent fittings and nice tiles and everything was completely stripped back, fully tanked and fixtures relocated.

frenchfancy81 · 06/01/2023 00:14

Just paid £14k...full re-fit inc taking down wooden ceiling and being fully re-plastered.

lobsterkiller · 06/01/2023 07:13

I'm in Yorkshire and my bathroom is tiny. I had a wetroom installed as it was the best use of space. We stripped it back to brick and took the ceiling down. It all came to just over 5k. The chap who installed it took me to a plumbers merchant rather than a big store to buy stuff.

We’ve been quoted 12k to divide our bathroom into 2 and make a family bathroom and a separate shower room with access from the landing. Suite and tiles included. It’s as part of a bigger renovation though which I think helps, plus I think it will be more than 12 once we choose tiles/ fixtures etc. even though they are included, he will have given a rough figure for those, we may choose more expensive ones.

Whycanineverever · 06/01/2023 07:18

Smallbathroom. Pretty much replacing like for like although had a couple of small false walls built in and slight moving of some pipes work.

£7.8 ish all in. About £5 for fitting and rest for Flooring, baths etc. was nice but not fancy bathroom suite.

yomellamoHelly · 06/01/2023 07:19

Family bathroom was £12k. Fair bit of demolishing to do (boiler cupboard, creating new window, filling in existing window...) and everything in new position incl plaster to walls and ceilings and new electrics.
Small shower room just completed £8k. But we had to demolish walls, replace walls and floor, retank, and then do everything again (damp).

London prices ....

Family Bathroom with bath, toilet sink unit and a fair amount of floor space for all new fittings, tiles and floor- 11k (Winchester) .

Small en-suite- new shower , had to do pip work and some wall work, units, fittings, toilet, floor and tiles- 7k

MojoJojo71 · 06/01/2023 07:23

I’m in the north east. I used an independent tradesman recommended by friends. He did all the plumbing and tiling and arranged for an electrician. Whole thing including fully tiled and new ceiling and spotlights came in just under £6k

SpamhappyTootsie · 06/01/2023 07:25

Just short of £14k (North West). We used a local plumbing/electrical/gas company we have used before for boiler maintenance etc. Asked the project manager to choose and buy everything for us, so it wasn’t the cheapest we could have got if we’d sourced the fittings ourselves, but I couldn’t be doing with the faff of choosing from a showroom. The only thing we bought was the tiles. We gave him a rough plan and he advised from there. Replaced all fittings, moved bath and shower, boarded it out over the existing walls, new ceiling, lights, everything!
The fitter they contracted was amazing. Nothing too much trouble, dealt with problems that arose. We are going to ask him to quote for a new kitchen in spring (company doesn’t do whole kitchens).
Labour was £8,000 roughly.

I’d ask around friends and neighbours, or on a local FB group etc. There were a couple of companies that would also have done a decent job. Be wary of anyone who says they can do it immediately.

SeasonsBleatings · 06/01/2023 07:25

Seven years ago we paid an independent £2000 inc fittings we ordered ourselves. Seems insanely cheap now! We're heading to IKEA to see what they would quote for our small en-suite.

Grumpybutfunny · 06/01/2023 07:27

Wow glad we can do it ourselves. Our bathrooms are from Victorian plumbing online. The ensuit including tiles was 1.6k for shower, combined toilet and sink unit with half tiling on most walls. The downstairs loo is also half tiled with sink and toilet plus black taps was £900 and the main bathroom has come to just under 3k but that is with brass accessories and fake marble tiles.

We paid a plumber £100 to move some pipes into the wall in the downstairs loo and £200 to change the radiators to heated towel rails. DH could have had a go but the central heating system is a nightmare so didn't want to chance draining it down ourselves

Findyourneutralspace · 06/01/2023 07:31

I paid £7k last year. Wood panelling, freestanding bath, walk in shower, basin and loo, floor tiles and tiles in the shower.
Labour done by a local fitter but he wasn’t that great tbh. It looks lovely though.

MuftiDay · 06/01/2023 07:36

Our main bathroom was £16k all in, but that included a new ceiling, bath was moved, floor had to be fixed, there was loads that needed doing. Plus I picked tiles that were apparently a nightmare to do (the tiler did a super job.) We used a local firm who did everything.

This was 3 years ago and the bathroom still looks brand new.

EdithGrantham · 06/01/2023 07:50

We have a tiny bathroom that was redone late 2020, was around £5k to have old one ripped out, new one put in (fitted bath with shower over and shower screen, toilet and sink units, radiator replaced with towel rail, new vinyl floor put down), tiles around half of it and ceiling replastered. We used a local bathroom fitter but supplied the suite, tiles, new floor etc ourselves from Victoria Plum. It's a million miles better than it was but wish we'd spent a little more on the shower as it looks a bit cheap and although the fitter was recommended to us I wouldn't use them again as there have been various little niggles that we've had to sort out since.

Usernameisunavailable · 06/01/2023 08:05

We had an en-suite done for £12k in 2021. (South East) A specialist bathroom company handled everything, ie. the plumbing, tiling and electrics as well as ordering all the items needed, except the tiles. It was about £2k more than some of the other quotes we had as the firm had been highly recommended by people we knew. Actually, I wasn’t overly impressed with them and wish we’d gone for a cheaper quote.

bigbluebus · 06/01/2023 08:42

We had our ensuite done in May. Toilet, shower and wash basin all stayed in same position. Shower cubicle was more expensive than the norm as we had a pentagonal shape. All walls tiled floor to ceiling, new ceiling fan and radiator removed with dual fuel towel rail installed in a different place. All fitting and tiling done by local plumber and his mate. Cost approx £7k all in.

NewHopes · 06/01/2023 15:29

Thanks everyone, really useful to have a ballpark figure in mind. Think I will get some of the cheaper jobs done this year and put the bathroom on the 5 year plan. 😊

I've just used Victoria plum. £12 k and wouldn't recommend at all.

Babdoc · 06/01/2023 15:48

DD has just had hers done in Edinburgh. £6K with an independent tradesman. I did one of mine about 5 years ago for £8K with a bathroom company.

Ylvamoon · 06/01/2023 15:51

We used a local company for our bathroom- they supplied everything. Ours is box room size and only has a shower... cost 6k in 2018. But we did go for the more expensive tiles!

Sorry to hear that. Can you elaborate - I'm booked in for a consultation with VP next week.

OP thanks for starting this as I'm in the same boat. I've had two approx quotes both in the £10k region - we have a small bathroom but everything needs replaced, including floor and lights. I'm in London.

All booked to start, told me two weeks for install then six days before they postponed for three weeks. Charged for services then told it couldn't be done. Only one plumber instead of two so it took four weeks, had already used up my AL so it was chaos. Really disorganised and unprofessional set up, playing you off against the contractors. It was a great sales pitch but the reality is very different. The work still isn't finished and still waiting on a refund for several items. We went with a big concern because we needed adaptation ASAP and needed it right first time. Only thing that happened is we paid through the nose.

EJPenn · 17/01/2023 14:01

Fitting prices are crazy, especially in the big smoke! My family reckon we shouldn't be paying more than £5k for a bathroom, but prices I've seen for fitting alone are above that.

Would anyone be able to PM me a recommendation in the SW London area?

AnotherNC22 · 17/01/2023 14:12

SW London - replacement of all tiles, floors, suite, replastering but no moving of pipes. £5.5k for labour plus about £1k for tiles / grout etc and £2k for suite.

Doesn't include painting of non tiled area.

Done as part of a bigger project (loft conversion) so not sure if we got a good deal because of the larger works we had done.

We live in East Yorkshire and looking to upgrade bathroom. Take out bath and replace with walk in shower, replace toilet, washbasin, towel radiator and new laminate flooring. Remove tiles and replace with shower panels. £3,500 for fittings but shocked at labour costs of £6,500. It's only a small bathroom
