Considering moving to Mansfield

I’m considering moving to Mansfield. Can anyone recommend quiet areas (i.e. v. little road noise), that’s relatively flat, and within a 5-10 walk of a park where I can let my dog off lead?

Don't do it. Mansfield is a dump. Very deprived and run down.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 04/01/2023 18:11

My advice would be don't!

LIZS · 04/01/2023 18:13

Where are you currently that Mansfield feels a good move?

SheWoreYellow · 04/01/2023 18:13

There’s worse, if you look here you can see if it’s what you’re expecting.

Might be better than where the OP is currently.

BethDuttonsTwin · 04/01/2023 18:13

Absolute shit hole. Sorry but it is.

custardbear · 04/01/2023 18:22

I agree it's not a nice place. How about south of Mansfield, Woodborough village, Epperston

Any reason why Mansfield?

JennyForeigner · 04/01/2023 18:27

Don't.

Although the Victoria Park bit of Ilkeston is nice and not too far away, if you absolutely have to go north of Notts.

Bostonspice · 04/01/2023 19:09

Thanks everyone, I think listening to you all this has helped my decision to consider elsewhere

Why would you move there?

sageandrosemary · 04/01/2023 19:45

Don't!

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 04/01/2023 19:54

God, why would you do that?

YoSofi · 04/01/2023 19:57

I live in a little village very close, and while my village is lovely with lots of countryside and woodland surrounding it I avoid Mansfield itself - it’s an awful town. Run down and depressing.

If you do want to consider this area, Edwinstowe, Southwell and Ravenshead are all lovely but expensive. Some parts of Rainworth are nice, and slightly cheaper.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2023 20:13

I'm a Mansfield born girl- although I now live in BAth. To be honest my issue isn't with Mansfield as a place but more a kind of attitude that pervades. Lee Anderson is MP next door and I think he's quite typical. One of my sons still lives in Mansfield woodhouse. I feel sorry for anyone living there with any liberal tendencies at all, as there's a shortage of you.

However there are places all over like this if I'm honest including in the south, it's hardly amazing in Swindon etc and it does have some ok things- it's very close to nice Derbyshire countryside, plus the M1, housing is cheap and very varied and there's quite a lot in the vicinity if you have kids. Some villages such as Ravenshead, edwinstowe and farnsfield are nice.

I lived un Mansfield for just over 4 years, I've lived in some of the rough bits & some of the nicer areas. I never felt unsafe there, I loved living in Berry Hill & the people of Mansfield are some of the friendliest I have ever known. Don't discount it before going & spending some time there.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/01/2023 20:20

There was a thread about a doctor moving to Mansfield a few weeks ago, I'll see if I can find it. Lots of advice (mostly "but why?" And "don't").

lucea87 · 04/01/2023 20:21

Edwinstowe is lovely and just outside of Mansfield. Gorgeous village with lots of amenities - pubs, restaurants, shops etc and only a few miles out of Mansfield. Depends why specifically Mansfield but I would consider places nearby rather than actual Mansfield personally....

Ilkeston is not nice…… it’s full of knuckle dragging inbreds.

Trying to think of somewhere local and very slightly less worse than Mansfield. Admittedly, I set the bar low ;-)

Diyextension · 04/01/2023 20:49

Although it does have a 700 acre country park on its doorstep.

Wonderwoman333 · 04/01/2023 20:51

Don't do it!

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2023 21:06

@Nat6999 I'm a Berry Hill girl (well WAS!) it's a very nice area - more Surrey than Mansfield.! I don't love my birth town --however I do occasionally stick up for it because itsall very well saying it's a dump but I've seen way worse. Even here in the south- parts of Bristol or Gloucester are indeed 'a dump' as are parts of Swindon, Southampton, south London, Harlow, Luton etc. what I will say OP is it's quite 'boisterous' - big boozing culture etc , it's not cute restaurants and wine bars- but some of the villages mentioned on here are a bit more like that . If you wanted a close park there is a big modern estate in the old quarry only 5 minutes from Berry hill park

sandrascarth · 18/10/2023 09:52

I moved to Mansfield ages ago from the South, the place is disgusting, the people are uncultured, totally negative experience.../..the town has a massive drug problem, beggars with a habit everywhere, the police and council are totally inept...believe me when people tell you not to come here it's for a good reason...it's nasty....

Crikeyalmighty · 19/10/2023 16:36

@sandrascarth Yep when places are cheap - there's usually a very good reason. As I said below it's my birth town and left when I was 29-

I always say to people that Lee Anderson isn't untypical of the average man with his attitudes- so depends if that bothers you- if I look at my school friends from grammar school , not one stayed in the area.

KievLoverTwo · 19/10/2023 16:53

@sandrascarth

the people are uncultured

That's exactly why people who aren't from London tend to perceive Londoners as being completely up themselves and are quite unwelcoming when they move to their areas.

I mean, really. Exactly how many locals did you interview to ascertain the entirety of Mansfield is uncultured?

But more importantly, WHAT DOES IT MATTER?

If your most important criteria in a place to live is cultured people, stay in London or other big cities.

Do the whole of the South a favour and keep your opinions to yourself, you just make it far worse for those of us who want to escape who don't share your elitist world view.
