New front door anyone? Costs?

Ontheup75 · 18/12/2022 09:25

Been quoted £1700 - £2000 for a supply and fitting of a composite door by 2 window companies. Nothing fancy in the design.
Seems a lot, but am I just out of touch with costs.
Can anyone suggest somewhere to source a door? B & Q reviews are terrible.
Would buying my own and finding a fitter be more economical?
Thanks!

I paid £1300 about 6 years ago so seems about right to me.

SandcastleQueen · 18/12/2022 09:27

Our new one cost that but it is quite fancy. Quoted £400 less for a less fancy one.

Reese123 · 18/12/2022 09:34

I paid £2100 about 4 years go

KnickerlessParsons · 18/12/2022 09:42

We've just ordered one. The average cost is around £1000 for a standard upvc type door that most people have. Door furniture is extra.
Don't know about fitting cost as DBro is going to fit it for free for us (he's in the trade), but he said it's not a big job.

tanstaafl · 18/12/2022 12:19

Often double glazing companies also fit doors so look at them.
i think there’s a few companies that actually make the doors then they’re supplied to various companies to sell/fit.
because of this we saved £1000 getting our door and side window from a small firm rather than the regional well known firm. Same door.
as a pp mentions, the costs go up for popular designs and things like long metal door handles, fancy glass patterns, door knockers, letterboxes.

in the end it comes down to the fitter(s).
the product is the same , a good fitter means there’s no issues to be chasing up for weeks/months.

Thanks!
Sounds like it is about right.
Both companies were window ones too.
And neither would tell me the cheapest combination of door design and furniture which was annoying!
I just need rid of my wooden old one that sticks and is draughty. Don't care what the new design is.
I'll pop back next week and ask again.

wickes and local trade might be an option

I just paid £1200 for a composite door, frame and top light. Nothing fancy - four panel. Fitted. I had quotes from £1200 to £2800 for different designs.

In the end I just replaced what was there with the same even though the most expensive one was beautiful. Couldn't justify it.

cansu · 18/12/2022 16:06

I paid just over 1200 about three years ago for a lovely solidor composite door.
I had to shop around a another local company quoted me 2500 for a virtually identical door.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 18/12/2022 16:20

Find a local independent fitter.
Big companies quoted us 1800-2500.
Just had nigh on the same door for 950 fitted in October.
"Cheepest" is the standard ones from the brochure. Adding a long bar/slam lock on the front adds £250-300.

NotMeNoNo · 18/12/2022 16:23

We recently had a quote of £2700 for Solidor composite door, side and top panels. Another place quoted over £4000 for the same, so it's worth shopping around. I'd hope for under £2k for just the door and frame.

AuntieDolly · 18/12/2022 16:48

Solidor composite door and 2 side lights just under £2k last year.

Beach1983 · 18/12/2022 21:37

Just paid £1300 for a 1930’s style composite door but we know the person that runs the window company so we definitely got a good price!

I paid £1500 two years ago, and that included fitting, which took half a day. So I guess the prices you have been quoted are in the right ball park

RaraRachael · 12/03/2024 11:12

I've just been quoted £1600 for a fairly nice one and £2400 for a really lovely one. Both composite from a local glazing company. They were nearly £3000 from one of the major firms.

HOL2024 · 12/03/2024 15:17

We’ve just paid £1890 through an independent for a composite door with 2 sidelights. It’s fantastic quality I believe it’s an endurance door.

Since the thread is 16 months old chances are shes made a decision

Eviebeans · 09/05/2024 09:24

We paid £2100 in September 2022 That was with our choice of door furniture

which company is it? as i am looking for 1930's style front door

Advocodo · 23/11/2025 17:23

We were quoted just under £2k in the South East a few months ago and will go with that. Family member had a quote for £2300 and £1700 in the past 2 weeks. Also South East.

Mydogsmellslikewee · 25/11/2025 14:03

I just had one put in. Composite door with two full length, glass side panels. With all the locks, handles, letter box etc, the door came to £1,300. We have it the green door and green frame inside and out - that make it £200 more expensive than if we had it white on the inside.

My builder charged me £400 to remove the old one and fit the new one.

user1471538283 · 25/11/2025 17:06

That sounds about right to me. I had my 1930s door with up lights and sude panels for £1500 5 years ago and it was white inside with chrome furniture. That door was a thing of beauty. I used an independent firm.

For my french doors I've used a slightly bigger but still local company so you could maybe ask for recommendations?

Mydogsmellslikewee · 25/11/2025 17:53

I’ve always found it cheaper for doors and windows, to buy your own and then get a builder to fit them. We’ve just had two sets of French doors fitted for a fraction of the cost you’d pay a window firm.

Easier said than done, I know, there are some real crooks out there! I was lucky to find a good builder who we use for everything.
