Evelyn Waughs house is up for sale. However, you can't view it as current tenants (who pay £250pa) won't let anyone in.

I wonder if it looks like the photos anymore!

What a fabulous house!! Wonder what the back story with the tenants is?

NewHouseNewMe · 12/12/2022 23:52

Is it a tenant or the buyers? Either way it’s a big risk to buy it not knowing what state they’ve kept it in. As grade 2* it would be a nightmare if significant damage had been done.

minipie · 12/12/2022 23:55

Wow. £250pa I wonder how that came about?

Hell of a risk to purchase it unseen especially with arsey tenants.

EmmaAgain22 · 12/12/2022 23:59

£250?!

ShirleyPhallus · 13/12/2022 00:17

It’s so beautiful

PatriciaHolm · 13/12/2022 00:21

There was something on Twitter about this - I believe the conclusion was that the tenant is actually the current owner, who bought the house through a company and is renting it to himself. He has form, shall we say. He's not going anywhere....

"The house was last sold for £2.9m in 2019 to a company controlled by a former BBC executive who was taken to court earlier this year after failing to pay most of the £1.24m cost of staying in the £4,725-a-night penthouse at the Mandarin Oriental hotel for eight months.
Jason Blain, who previously worked as an executive for BBC Worldwide and Sony Entertainment, was sued by the Knightsbridge hotel in January over an unpaid bill of £740,000, which included £30,110 for valet parking and £25,497 for room service.
Blain bought Piers Court via a company called Winston’s House, with a loan of £2.1m from the historic London bank Hoare’s & Co. Blain could not be reached for comment."

Handy for the M5, not even the agents have looked inside and they don't promise that you'll get possession - they said a notice has been stuck on the gate and you should get legal advice. Plus neighbours, plus a town that will have expanded to your gates within a generation.............

Not tempting at all

ILoveeCakes · 13/12/2022 00:30

I wonder if the bank has pulled the loan - given that the company is showing appointment of a receiver and the occupant is being difficult/hardly trying to maximise the price.

Btw - Before anyone thinks buying your house through a company is a great tax scam - if you charge yourself £250 pa, HMRC will want a word about Benefits in Kind tax

EmmaAgain22 · 13/12/2022 00:37

How does anyone get out of paying a hotel bill for such a long time?

CavalierApproach · 13/12/2022 00:44

I’m completely bewildered by how any of this works.

How did he have the opportunity to rack up a hotel bill like that in the first place? How could anyone?

And before that — how did he manage to get a loan of 2.1 million? How could anyone?

Especially someone called Jason, because the only way I can imagine it happening is if he was incredibly, incredibly old-school posh and connected to other posh people, but if that was the case surely he’d be called something like St John?

FannyCann · 13/12/2022 00:53

How utterly bizarre. Can't you be prosecuted for fraud for an unpaid hotel like that.

The auction is on Thursday. Someone keep an eye and update us.

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 13/12/2022 00:57

£250 per year! Yeah, the tenant isn't leaving!

ShirleyPhallus · 13/12/2022 04:32

Confused, why is he selling it if he won’t leave?

Ciri · 13/12/2022 06:24

Its beautiful though. Probably worth the risk for someone.

It's probably been repossessed.

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 08:01

Side note - Waugh hated Stinchcombe, and called it Stinkcombe

unclebuck · 13/12/2022 09:13

how the hell do people like that chancer get away with this shit

bankruptbillionaire · 13/12/2022 17:41

Name changed for this one.
I know the owner, he has form for racking up massive bills and not paying them. He's now bankrupt.

This was reported in the news. What’s the real goss?

DowningStreetParty · 13/12/2022 17:50

What a fabulous house!

bankruptbillionaire · 13/12/2022 17:51

He's an odd character. Very private, very generous. Absolutely nothing about him online- he's covered his tracks really well. Good at keeping lots of plates spinning. Lots of shell companies hiding the real money.

Soothsayer1 · 13/12/2022 18:37

How could anyone?
sheer brass neck + posh voice?

JellyBeanFactory · 13/12/2022 20:04

Might watch the auction on Thursday and see if it sells!

The sale is "On the instruction of the joint fixed charged receiver."

I.e. The bank...it's being repossessed.

How can he be very generous when he clearly has no money??? Generous with other people's money perhaps!
