Good white paint for a south east facing room?

House currently painted in very dark colours and I'd like to change everything to white. But I'm a bit confused by all the shades of white and whether to go warm or cool. I've already done a thread search but they're usually for people with north facing rooms. I'd like the place to look brighter and bigger but without losing the coziness of low ceilings and snugness if that makes sense!

Also, could the same just be used throughout eg for the back rooms too or would it be better to change it? First timer here re house owning so probably very ignorant

We painted our south east facing bedroom in Pointing. It's Farrow and Ball so a bit bloody expensive, but I like the softness of it. And it goes well with the colour we painted the wardrobe doors.
In the next door room (north west) we used a Dulux 'light and space' paint - I'm really sorry I can't remember the colour name but it feels warm while not being too cream. I think as long as you don't go for stark white in a north facing room, and choose furnishings that bring warmth/colour, you'll be fine with any off white that you personally like.

Ha! We used Pointing too. All open areas which includes kitchen, lounge. Hall, stairs etc. Behind closed doors we have other colours.

I also meant to mention Wevet. It’s a cool white and clean looking. I think the trick is to stay with one white. Not brilliant white though. What goes with your furniture? What age of house? What mood do you want to create? There’s so many “whites” to choose from although the ones I’ve never used are ones with a yellow hue.

I have Dulux Timeless in an east facing room, it feels ‘white’ and bright but is in contrast to quite a bold colour.
Also have it on the ceiling in a west facing hallway and stairs where it’s contrasted with a much softer neutral and it looks really different, much more ‘off-white’ white.

both looks I really like but if you could easily think they were different whites.

i think it’s a good white to use everywhere.

Also I would buy some tester pots and a roll of lining paper.
paint big squares of paint in them and then trim so it’s only the colour not the paper and stick them up around your house.
you’ll get a feel for what works best. Do t forget your flooring will make a big difference.

Great advice thank you! On other threads I read about Wimborne white (f&b) and piano white (dulux) but am now away to google Ponting and these others!

I prefer Wimborne white for woodwork. Goes with everything. It’s one of the palest whites. Very neutral.

Swanna · 11/12/2022 07:01

One more question: did you paint the ceiling and walls in the same white or use a contrasting one?

We are currently painting our house as we have been getting a lot of work done. We have opted for Wimborne white and we are doing it on both walls and ceiling. I've only got two rooms finished but it looks great I think. I can try and take some pictures later if you want?

Swanna · 11/12/2022 07:12

@ApolloandDaphne that would be amazing, thank you so much! It makes sense to have the ceiling the same colour doesn't it?

I've painted my house in Loft White (Little Greene) - it's a bright white but not jarring like many brilliant whites are. It's lovely imo!

My house is SW/ NE facing.

olympicsrock · 11/12/2022 07:28

Just had a paint expert over. He said not to do ceiling and walls the same.
even With white / cream use one for walls, one for ceiling and one for woodwork ( aqua satin finish)

apparently it gives depth and detail. Just make sure all match/ combine nicely .

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 11/12/2022 07:33

Whitney white is super. Bright but warm.

Clockface is also very nice.

MimiSunshine · 11/12/2022 07:46

it depends on what look you want as to weather you paint the ceiling the same. I have Timeless on walls and ceilings in my east facing room as that’s the consistent look I wanted. But I’ve also colour matched my woodwork to my bolder wall colour choice which a couple of painters I had in thought was quite odd.

if I was doing an all white room, I think I’d do all woodwork and walls the same shade but possibly not the ceiling so it didn’t feel like a box

Swanna · 11/12/2022 07:51

What a minefield! I'm now thinking of Wimborne white for walls and All White for the ceiling (or a dupe of these from Dulux or Johnstones). I know WW has a yellow tint but am assuming it works with most rooms no matter what way they face as I'd like to just do one throughout. Need to get some samples!

Wimborne White doesn’t have an obvious yellow hue. It’s just not a brilliant white. It’s one of the lightest F&B do. We have it on all woodwork inside and out. Makes life easy! We have it on the ceiling in every room too. It’s consistent and makes the house harmonious.

Bluevelvetsofa · 11/12/2022 14:34

We have Rock Salt in a room that faces south. We also have it in a room that faces north. I like it in both.

Here is my pictures of Wimborne White newly painted in my sitting room.

F&B White Tie is a lovely off-white that is very adaptable. And if you get an F&B tester pot or colour swatch, you can get trade paint mixed to match at some Leyland stockists and big B&Qs. Much cheaper :)

Swanna · 11/12/2022 15:48

Oh it looks lovely @ApolloandDaphne

I’ve used Dulux Timeless, it’s bright but soft and warm and goes on easily, unlike Farrow & Ball.

LemonSwan · 11/12/2022 16:09

Pointing is a warm white. Not really magnolia as it’s red based rather than yellow but in the same family.

I love the shaded white series, shadow white, and school house white. These are neutral whites, took of beige, griege, and in the right light a really subtle olive hue.

Depending on how much light you have depends which one you want to go for. I will warn It looks alarming weird colour in a tester patch against white.

LemonSwan · 11/12/2022 16:16

As an example of shaded white as the most darkest so colour tones most prominent…

Heres all the different colours it can change to throughout the day depending on your room.

Another vote for Dulux Timeless! It’s the perfect almost-white.

Starseeking · 11/12/2022 16:51

All White is a nice warm white. I have it on my ceiling, coving and skirting.
