Recent bathroom refurb quote?

YukoandHiro · 15/11/2022 18:53

How much did it cost if you had your bathroom refurbished recently (eg in the last year)? Particularly if you were in London and the South East?
I've had some quotes in and can't believe my eyes. I clearly had unrealistic expectations.

Curious to see the replies. We asked a fittsd to come and quote (let's see if will show up). And we were basically told he is almost fully booked for 2023😮

Vikingmama79 · 15/11/2022 21:35

Just paid 12k for a very small bathroom up North. Really pleased with it but still reeling from the shock 😂. It was a supply and fit company which def bumped the prices up as know I could have bought items myself quite a bit cheaper online but company we used have brilliant reputation also booked 12 months in advance so guess we paid more to get someone we were confident would do a great job.

Dragonskin · 15/11/2022 21:56

We just had a quote for the family bathroom, not a large room and just a bath with shower over, loo and sink (all that will fit lol) and we were quoted 12.5k plus VAT

mondaytosunday · 15/11/2022 22:45

Had two done. One a small family bathroom. Kept same layout. Remove all tiles (which were on all walls), plaster, level out floor properly, fit new bath w/shower over, loo and sink, lit mirror, new light. Tile around bath/shower to above sink. £5000k plus about £2000 for the tiles and sanitary ware.
Loft en suite: moved door, changed shower to bath plus shower, moved toilet and sink, added heated towel rail. Tiled three walls and floor. £10k plus £2000 for tiles (handmade imported from Spain).
I always source my own sanitary ware plus mirrors, lights and tiles.

RidingMyBike · 16/11/2022 11:10

We've just spent £4.5k on sanitaryware and cupboards for a small bathroom and separate cloakroom so that amount for two basins, two loos, one bathtub, various cupboards, towel rail, taps, mirrored cabinet. The bath has taps with shower attachment.

Labour, flooring and tiles not included. We ordered those from a bathroom supply company and they're being fitted by our builder as part of a bigger project.

emmathedilemma · 16/11/2022 12:17

One of my friends got quoted £10k just for the installation!! Needless to say she didn't take him up on the offer (that's outside London too)

YukoandHiro · 16/11/2022 14:27

We have had quotes coming in around £20k for a medium sized bathroom in London - bath sink toilet and separate shower cubicle. And for one of those that includes units and labour but not tiles! Can't believe it.
Don't know whether to just accept this is the going price in London or keep hunting. Costs are going up every day, on materials and labour, and it really needs doing (fixer upper house) so feel like we might regret not just biting the bullet now if it's another £5k again by next summer.

Anyone in London, recommendations of good firms/builders welcome!

Oh god @Isouf - we really need it done quicker than that!!!

Our very small en-suite was £5500 last year. I sourced all parts from Victoria plumb and fitting was 3,500 so parts were £2000. We kept the existing toilet.

Beautifulbeard · 16/11/2022 14:33

Hi, I just got a quote this morning for £8200 including VAT for a small family bathroom. It includes removal of tiles and old fittings, plastering, tiles, uPVC ceiling, freestanding bath, sink toilet and reshaping old hot press. We aren't in London but I still thought this a bit steep. We last did a similar size bathroom in 2014 and it was £5200. I suspect I will end up going with it though after I get over the shock as they said they can do it in January and the other firms I contacted haven't even got back to me.

Threadkillacilla · 16/11/2022 14:36

Currently having one done oop North £12k.
if I didn't need it I wouldn't be doing it, still can't believe how much it is, my poor credit card.

RidingMyBike · 16/11/2022 14:39

Just checked our quote:

Approx £2.5k for sanitaryware, taps, cupboards
Remaining labour and materials:
Strip existing bathroom £176 (skip already on site for other rooms)
Make good walls £569
Tiles and tiling £800
Floor £710

So nowhere near as high as others have been quoted. Is it a specialist bathroom company or a general builder?

YukoandHiro · 16/11/2022 14:43

Have consulted both - coming in similar!

Not sure what to do tbh. The specialist company is only about £1.5k more expensive and probably guaranteed a better finish.

Ugh. I was thinking it would be about £10k.

We've also just had carpets sorted from a budget brand, not independent or luxury. £11k for four bedrooms and two halls.

Beginning to wish we hadn't bought a house that needs fixing up tbh

We are London/ Kent border and got quoted 9k and 16k excl tiles 18 months ago for our tiny family bathroom. In the end we bought the suite and tiles and paid a plumber, electrician and tiler separately.

YukoandHiro · 16/11/2022 14:49

@Eek3under3 how much did that cost in the end, and how much massive faff was it to manage (particularly in terms of the time it took to fit)?

We’re having our family bathroom split into two and making a bathroom (bath with shower over) and a separate shower cubicle with a separate door from the landing. He’s quoted 12k for all, including fittings etc. however the cost is being kept down because despite that move, all water and plumbing is remaining in the same places. We’re in Worcester.

GiantWotsit · 16/11/2022 14:49

I'm in London and have had a quote for £11.5k for fitting an ensuite - no bath just shower. That includes all labour but not fixtures and fittings so I imagine it will go up to around £15k.

I should add that this is a builder not a bathroom fitter and it is being done as part of a bigger job which I do think helps keep the cost down a bit.

RandomPerson42 · 16/11/2022 14:51

I’d be intrested to hear what the labour charge rate is as even my local garage mechanic up north charges £50+VAT per hour.

How much labour is involved in the bathroom OP (our main bathroom is same as yours - bath, sink, toilet and separate shower cubicle)?

If they don’t tell you how many man hours or days then they are probably trying it on.

In which case you probably need to haggle - which sucks - and is something I would hate having to do as I would then think they would do sub-standard work.

I have a friend who is getting Everest windows fitted and he got them down to almost 50% off.

Have a look at:

HouseIsOnFire · 16/11/2022 14:56

9.2k supply and fit then feature tiles and floor tiles I'm supplying. Includes Plastering walls, moving loo and sink and replacing bath with shower. Am in NW and they're starting next week, SO ready for it!

DogInATent · 16/11/2022 15:00

Your best bet for good quality and good value is a trusted independent fitter, the local branches of Howdens, etc. will have a list of bathroom installers they can recommend. But expect to be enquiring now for some time in the Spring, at the earliest. All the good independents are as busy as they want to be. I'd be suspicious of anyone that's currently available before Christmas.

If you go for a specialist company you're definitely going to end up paying premium prices.

Alexalee · 16/11/2022 15:12

Between me and dd we have had 4 bathrooms done in the last 3 years. Same fitter every time, we sourced materials for all of them. The cost of the last bathroom was almost double the price of the first, very similar specs. The materials have almost doubled and so had the labour. The last bathroom came in at just over 10k. Labour was 6500 of that. Can send you over their details if you are in the south london area, they don't work over the river apparantly

mnchat · 16/11/2022 15:14

We live in west london and paid £12k all in for a small bathroom in a 2 bed period flat. The sanitary ware was from wicks (never using them again) and an local independent fitter (Eastern European) fit the items and tiled the walls/floors.
This included plastering and creating a new storage cupboard and doors.

mnchat · 16/11/2022 15:15

This was early this year

crosstalk · 16/11/2022 15:21

Going through this myself but with installers having to deal with previously bodged plumbing which meant air and hot water mixed from hot water tank and redundant piping everywhere and horrors with the cold water tank in attic. This is our only and tiny bathroom.

I would order what you need in terms of today's prices if you can do that yourself. And book your most trustworthy plumber in.
