Oxford - village feel - where to move?

CoastalWave · 11/11/2022 13:38

After recommendations for Oxford for my brother.

Work is in Oxford, previously lived in Thame so knows area quite well. However, happier to move further out for his budge which is £350k.

Would like an older property/character/village/church.

All i'm finding on Rightmove are new builds or 70'shouses!

Where should I focus my search?

£350k isn't going to go very far at all in that area unfortunately.

mast0650 · 11/11/2022 13:55

Hmmm. That isn't a big budget for Oxfordshire. How large does the house need to be? Thame is one of the more affordable places around. Generally I would think that in that price bracket it makes more sense to get a reasonable sized new house in an otherwise attractive and characterful town/village rather than try to get an older property which is likely to be teeny tiny!

OhFFS! · 11/11/2022 13:55

I would agree. I live in a village near Thame and you don't see much for that. What size house is he looking for?

CoastalWave · 11/11/2022 14:16

I know its not the biggest of budgets for that area. Needs 2 bedrooms ideally. It's just him, so doesn't need to be huge, but ideally 2 bedrooms, small garden/yard and parking.

There are a few small houses in Wallingford within his price range and a lovely (listed though) cottage in benson which - if I remember correctly - is a lovely village

LATBOTG · 11/11/2022 14:17

Where in Oxford does he work? Oxford comes to a standstill at rush hour, so would advise to carefully consider commute when coming in from a village outside and how he intends to travel. Anything from West Oxfordshire into Oxford is a disaster, unless you're on a bike.

RoseAndGeranium · 11/11/2022 14:21

If he commutes into Oxford he should think about what he’ll do when the traffic gates come into force from summer onwards. It’s going to make life very difficult for those of us who live in the neighbouring villages.

WrongLife · 11/11/2022 14:31

Which side of Oxford does he need to come into? Will make a massive difference as to what village you choose - also bus / car / cycle / park and ride / swim up the river?

I can't find anything on RightMove for Benson.

Are there any local estate agents you would recommend?

His office is five miles from Windsor station at Junction 5 on the M4 so the best approach is by road from the west he believes?

Tbh he's mainly WFH so it wouldn't be a daily trip to the office - possibly popping in once a fortnight.

South Oxfordshire (Thame, Wallingford, Watlington) much more expensive than West Oxfordshire/Berkshire borders. Some nice villages around Wantage and Didcot.

That's in Berkshire? Is he getting the train to Windsor from Oxford?

Sorry, completely confused Thought you said he worked in Oxford?

mast0650 · 11/11/2022 15:08

Junction 5 on m4 is near Slough???? Nowhere near Oxford!

CoastalWave · 11/11/2022 15:55

Sorry , I don't know the area at all. I"m from the North!
He's asked me to look near Oxford. Family have just always said his work is in Oxford. I have no clue where junction 5 on the M4 is!

OP posts:
CoastalWave · 11/11/2022 15:56

So I can extend the area to Berkshire then? (think i need to look at map showing the counties)

Slough to Oxford is nearly 50 miles away and takes over an hour and that's on a good day. I think you need to get an exact location first.

Cherryana · 11/11/2022 16:07

Didcot - bit cheaper, station which is good for communte - surrounding areas include Cholsey, wantage, Wallingford
If he is on the M4 - Thatcham and Newbury has a good station/commute.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/11/2022 16:07

For fairly easy access to the M4 J5 you could look at Windsor, Datchet, Horton, Slough, Langley, Iver, Staines, Colnbrook, Wraysbury, Uxbridge etc. Or to go a bit further out you could round Maidenhead.
But based on the misinformation you've been given so far, I think I'd tell your brother to find his own house 😁

Cherryana · 11/11/2022 16:08

Reading is between Oxford and Windsor and there are loads of village/small towns- Theale, Wokingham, Pangbourne

PedantScorner · 11/11/2022 16:17

M4 Junction 5 is Langley, Slough.
Langley station is nearer than Windsor, and he won't need to change trains.
Oxford to Slough is about an hour's commute, and Langley is one stop further.

WrongLife · 11/11/2022 16:20

I can promise he won't want to be driving from Oxford to jn5 of the M4!

Yes, and coming in from the Abingdon side is going to be almost impossible for ‘a year’ while the Botley road is completely closed at the railway bridge. Many people in Oxfordshire think the loony Green/ Libdem council will seize the opportunity never to reopen that route (‘the main route westwards ‘ to quote them themselves) to anything other than bikes and buses.

it’s a nightmare, tbh. But I presume he knows that.

PedantScorner · 11/11/2022 16:33

It's not a commute I'd want to drive.
If you look at properties within a 5-mile radius of Langley, he should be able to find something for his budget

There’s been work on the Botley road for years, one way or another. It’s a joke. You might well be right about plans to close the route. Seems to be what the city at large is planning for most vehicles.
