Is white gloss outdated.

I have always preferred white gloss on all my woodwork like door frames and skirting boards etc.
But while surfing the web I have seen lots of people doing trim in different colour or the same colour of the wall. Is it classed as outdated.

White never dates and always looks good. Look at high end houses on Rightmove to see whether wealthy people are painting their woodwork unusual colours. My guess is that it's an insta/TikTok led trend. I also dislike the trend for window frames in blue or grey. Obviously this is entirely personal choice and lots of people would hate my house, but if you like white I would go with that.

I prefer the eggshell (I think that’s the right word!) for doors and skirting but always white! Can’t imagine coloured skirting

CambsAlways · 29/10/2022 16:54

Can’t stand gloss, has to be eggshell in white for us

bravotango · 29/10/2022 16:55

White is fine, but gloss can yellow over time. White satinwood is good!

RM2013 · 29/10/2022 18:19

I personally prefer white skirting etc but generally use satinwood rather than gloss as it gives off less odor and I think it’s easier to work with

Stripedbag101 · 29/10/2022 18:19

Don’t follow trends - go with what you like.

trends will come and go - I often wonder if everyone really loved grey everything!!!!

if you live it and it makes you happy then that’s all that matters. Don’t decorate to suit the passing trends

bellsbuss · 29/10/2022 18:58

We have satinwood

gluenotsoup · 29/10/2022 19:00

White satinwood here. It looks clean and won’t date. It has to be a very good, smooth finish no matter what or I don’t like it 🙂

BumbleNova · 29/10/2022 19:14

It’s definitely not the done thing these days - most interior designers don’t actually use any white at all. Gloss is also naff on woodwork- trendy on walls.

but it’s your home.

Lcb123 · 29/10/2022 19:16

Yes we did all our skirting boards, door frames and cupboard doors in white gloss it looks really nice. All white walls - knew we’d sell soon so kept it neutral!

stuntbubbles · 29/10/2022 19:17

I only like gloss on a front door, or occasionally on a specific item – like a built-in cupboard in a colour, to create a high-shine lacquered look. And never white. But I’m a “match your skirting, architrave and door to the wall colour” person and prefer satinwood or matt woodwork paint if possible.

Does it matter if something’s dated though? Your house should be how you like it.

BlooberryBiskits · 29/10/2022 19:29

IME gloss is more durable than satinwood & easy to keep clean.

This is important (to me) for skirting boards as they are dust magnets and bannisters/handrails (esp the round but that everyone sticks their grubby hands on, possibly a newell post?). I had satinwood on this in my previous home & it developed a grey patina over time (🤢 - not envy)

I have all white gloss woodwork in my house and very pale muted wall colours - I think it looks good & I have had lots of compliments

No white woodwork people - are you suggesting one colour throughout the house or going room by room?

gluenotsoup · 29/10/2022 19:48

It might be fashionable, but has anyone actually got gloss walls? I can’t imagine living with it, it’d drive me batty.

EmmaC78 · 29/10/2022 20:00

Gloss is a nightmare to apply and does go yellow so I always use white satinwood.

I don't think anyone would have a whole wall in gloss! Just for woodwork like skirting boards, Bannister's, door jambs etc.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/10/2022 21:32

Eggshell for me as I like the smooth finish, but always white. I think painting doors/skirting boards the same colour as the walls can work really well in period properties with high ceilings, but not so much in newer houses. Coloured doors/skirting can sometimes look good against a pale wall I think, but it's not for me, I think it'd be a pain to paint over.

Sestriere · 30/10/2022 07:05

Yes to white eggshell.

steelseries · 30/10/2022 07:15

@CakeCrumbs44
I watched a Farrow & Ball tutorial recently and they painted an entire bathroom wall in green gloss 😟

Goldmember · 30/10/2022 07:23

I decided to go with white gloss on skirting and architraves as it's the most hard wearing. I was tempted with colour as we have fairly neutral walls but fashions change and I don't want to re-do the skirting boards so soon. We have some original 1970s orange skirting board in some parts of the house 🙈

Spanielsarepainless · 30/10/2022 07:24

No, it's not outdated, but a lot of these colours will be.

eurochick · 30/10/2022 07:26

White yes. Gloss is outdated.

Umbrellabee · 30/10/2022 07:56

Always white! I’ve no idea what type of paint we’ve used but I can’t stand coloured woodwork. That will definitely date, white never dates.

marmaladepop · 30/10/2022 08:34

White eggshell yes, gloss no, although gloss more hardwearing.

CambsAlways · 30/10/2022 08:36

gloss to me is outdated our painter and decorator told me this last year when we said we wanted white gloss doors he said ugh reminds him of a fish chip shop 🤣🤣🤣🤣

stuntbubbles · 30/10/2022 09:07

White gloss feels outdated with coloured walls in period properties because it chops up all the lovely height and scale of the rooms and shouts “look at my door”. We’ve just moved into a fully white-glossed house and one of the biggest jobs we’ve factored in is klingstripping it off all the fiddly architraves, skirtings and stair spindles. 😭
