How's Stroud like?

foxyvox · 05/10/2022 20:42

We are now very close to finalising our house buy in Stroud.
I realise I should have asked this question ages ago, but here we are. So, what's your view of Stroud?
What's amazing and what's not?
What would you recommend doing there? (myself and husband, plus two primary ages girls)
Any nice places to buy furniture? (or maybe just look out, considering our mortgage costs)
Any views would be appreciated!

We loved it, only moved for work. Didn't have kids so can't comment but the Saturday market was wonderful, love the new 5 valleys centre and people are so friendly (and generally relaxed)no keeping up with the Joneses!
Where abouts in Stroud?

Olivetreebutter · 05/10/2022 21:42

Also - easy acces to Bristol, Cheltenham, Gloucester, and London. And of course Swindon.
Plenty of parks, beautiful walks nearby (so long as you like hills!)
Malthouse Emporium is good for furniture, down by the postal sorting office (on the Road towards Gloucester). Lots of decent eating pubs, and Jolly Nice up on the top by Minchinhampton is always fun for food and bits and bobs (though pricey!)

Spidey66 · 06/10/2022 13:45

This interesting. We're planning and retiring and moving out of London, and Stroud is somewhere that takes my fancy.

Spidey66 · 06/10/2022 13:46

@Olivetreebutter What areas would you recommend? Budget of around 300k.

Spidey66 · 06/10/2022 13:47

PS no kids, so no schools etc to worry about

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/10/2022 13:49

Bit bonkers.

People walk in the road and get weirdly outraged if there’s a car driving there.

Weird vibe.

I won’t recommend it.

...sure you weren't one of the knobs who drive their cars on the pedestrianised high street?

It's the "hippy/new age" part of Gloucs, all my alternatuve friends live there and love it. The town itself is ok and the surrounding countryside is beautiful.

I believe it was the only town in gloucs that voted remain for Brexit.

That won't get you a big place, but perhaps a two bed terrace. You could look at Bisley, which is out of town between Stroud and Chalford, or possibly Ebley which is along the canal. At the price range you'll mostly get stuff coming up for Stonehouse, which is okay but not got the same energy as Stroud, but it is only one stop along on the train line (and one stop closer to Gloucester and Cheltenham).
It's frustrating in a way because we bought 9 years ago a 2.5bed terrace for sub £200k. Sold it two years ago for over £275. Our neighbours just sold theirs this summer for £320k+
Great for those of us selling, but rough for those buying. It's a very popular place because of train lines and location etc and Covid just made it shoot up in popularity because of flexible working.
When looking for houses - be flexible about parking, gardens and 'normal' layouts. It's all hills and lots of properties are built into hillsides and terraces so what is normal elsewhere isn't normal in Stroud (a bit like the psyche!)
To the pp who said about walking in the road - I can well imagine it in some places. It is the home and birthplace to Extinction Rebellion and the people there can have a really free spirit at times.

DaphneduM · 06/10/2022 15:44

We looked at Stroud and Dursley when we were trying to buy a few years ago. It's ok I would say if you like the self-conscious 'Glastonbury imitation' vibe and can cope with some pretty dense traffic. It's extremely popular now, of course. We decided on the Forest of Dean which also has it's own lovely quirky vibe and much cheaper housing!

Sausagenbacon · 06/10/2022 15:46

As others have said, a strong hippie vibe (lots of anti-vaxers).

Reluctantadult · 06/10/2022 15:47

Good for greenies, posh senior schools and hills.

notsosoftanymore · 06/10/2022 18:47

The Saturday market is vibrant but also very expensive and somewhat over hyped. The rest of the week, the town is pretty quiet and a bit dull and by 5pm everything has closed and it is empty!
At weekends, the town fills up with second homers and tourists and Friday traffic is definitely much heavier.

The primary and secondary schools all seem to have a good reputation.
We moved to Cashes Green which has a large 60s estate, we found it quite cliquey and unfriendly. Uplands and old Stroud around the hospital is much sought after, Rodborough is very friendly; going out of town, Woodchester is good along with the villages of Amberley and Box, Randwick and Whitehall.

The wider area is called Stroud Five Valleys and people tend to do activities throughout the whole area which includes Painswick, Chalford, Minchinhampton, Nailsworth and Stonehouse (which has a huge, recently built estate on its edges). However, this does mean that there is a lot of traffic and not many other ways of getting around. There are buses and there is a good cycle/shared use path between Stroud and Nailsworth. Minchinhampton and Selsley commons are beautiful, well used and with fantastic views.

It really depends what you are used to and why you are moving. For us it was quite a shock after living in a small city and tbh, we are moving on. It has changed a lot since lockdown, many of those who rushed to buy have moved away. It is though, seemingly, a good area for young families and there are lots. of youth activities, yoga, leisure centre with pool, clubs, complementary medicine and a fair share of hippie types as someone above said.

I'd suggest spend some time hanging around the town mid-week, late afternoon/early evening and see how it feels.

I'm afraid I'd disagree with no keeping up with the Jones's. do you have a soft top, turquoise Mercedes or at the very least, a brand new Range Rover? Phew, you'll be ok then!! Anti vexer? No problem.

Oh people love that side of town, hope you enjoy it!
@notsosoftanymore very specific about the turquoise Merc 😂sorry you didn't enjoy it, can't be for everyone! In fairness we are rural people, so for us Stroud was busy! We're now in a very small village...

@Olivetreebutter
sorry but if you make yourself so obviously visible, it comes across as ostentatious but then some of the cars that now appear on Saturday mornings are just extraordinary and rather amusing. No one has yet mentioned Tetbury.....😁😁😁
@Ecotourist I'm there with you!

Olivetreebutter · 06/10/2022 23:51

@notsosoftanymore god I nearly got taken out by an idiot behind the wheel of a range rover in Tetbury the other morning. I hate driving through there!

SpidersAreShitheads · 07/10/2022 03:53

Aaah I love Stroud OP!! I live one town over in Gloucester, and Stroud has a much nicer vibe.

Every town in this country will have its fair share of detractors, but I think Stroud is lovely. It does have an alternative, hippy vibe and there are plenty of independent shops plus a wonderful market. The Christmas market is fabulous, and I love the firework displays in November.

It's very hilly and the streets are narrow, which won't be everyone's cup of tea. My mum refused to consider moving there because the town centre has cobbled streets haha!

I think it has tons of character and avoids the snobbery that you'll find in local Cotswoldy places such as Cirencester and Tetbury.

If you want to go out, there's a mix of lively pubs like the Queen Vic, plus good locals like the Rose Inn.

If your girls like ice cream, take a trip out to Winstone's, an ice cream parlour just outside Stroud on Rodborough Common. Amazing home made ice cream and stunning views, plus plenty of room to run around! (www.winstonesicecream.co.uk/our-parlour/).

I just think Stroud is a really nice place to live and is a bit different to Gloucester, Cheltenham, Forest of Dean, Cotswold towns. As a PP said, Stonehouse is very close by but it's an ENTIRELY different kind of place. I am biased though as DP is from Stroud and we know lots of people from there. I don't recognise some of the descriptions of Stroud from PP but I guess like anywhere, everyone has their own take on it (ps - I'm not an anti-vaxxer!!)

Sausagenbacon · 07/10/2022 07:13

Winstones is great!

Love Stroud but DP won’t let me move there! We got some good furniture from the Cirencester Furniture Bank which for some reason is based there. Good boys and girls grammars. Major downside is the hills there are not a lot of flat areas there. Upside is that you get great views across the valley!
