How's Stroud like?

We are now very close to finalising our house buy in Stroud.
I realise I should have asked this question ages ago, but here we are. So, what's your view of Stroud?
What's amazing and what's not?
What would you recommend doing there? (myself and husband, plus two primary ages girls)
Any nice places to buy furniture? (or maybe just look out, considering our mortgage costs)
Any views would be appreciated!

Hi @foxyvox so how have you found Stroud?? We are thinking of moving there in the next 2 years with 2 kids, 1 primary and 1 will be secondary, and would love to know what you think! Main concerns: is it cliquey? Is it dead after 5pm? Are the state schools nice? We used to live up on the common many years ago, pre-kids, and feel like we need to be in a town these days so we don’t spend our lives ferrying kids around!

Stroud is lovely, but we are very much into nature/the hippy side of things, and moved from a very small village, so factor that into my opinion.
We made some friends very quickly, it felt people are very warm.
It is dead after 5 pm, yes.
We live very close to Stroud Valley primary school, which is absolutely excellent. I think most primary and secondary schools are.
Good luck with moving, when are you thinking of relocating?

Oh my goodness, I know someone who lived in Lower Street house is selling now, I am wondering if you have bought it!!

Stroud is as others have said very hippy ish. In some ways that gives a nice vibe, and in some other ways it gives a bit of a weird vibe. I couldn't be bothered with the anti vaxxers.

One comment, Stroud has 2 big grammar schools. They have a great reputation etc, but the other secondaries do not have a good reputation, and all the clever kids go to the grammars.
That means you are in an11+ high pressure environment.

We moved in 2022, there's been a number of houses selling on Lower Street. It's a great location as so close to everything, but quiet.

Myself and DW +DD are looking to relocate from Bristol to Stroud... Looking at a few houses next weekend.

Parents live up in the Forest (having recently relocated from Quedgeley) and In laws are still in Bristol so Stroud seems like a perfect base in-between them all so they can all help with childcare :)

I grew up in Quedgeley so I know Stroud quite well but dont really know if there are any areas / roads to keep clear of?

Spent today wondering the town and surrounding areas but it was lovely and friendly people were polite especially when compared to Bristol "The uks Friendliest city"
