Looking for a nice village outside Norwich

MegBusset · 23/01/2008 21:17

Title says it all really, we are considering relocating near to Norwich (DH's home town), want to be in a smallish village with its own primary school (non-faith) and a nice pub. We are considering the likes of Taverham, Little Melton and Stoke Holy Cross, just wondered if anyone had other recommendations (or places to avoid).

Ooh, Surlingham does look lovely

Ah I get it now . In Scotland we have Primary & Secondary schools, then catholic schools.

I am pretty sure (about 85%!) that you can withdraw your child at Hethersett if you so desire. I can't get on the school website as AOL doesn't like the address for some reason!

Fimbo · 28/01/2008 13:42

Finally have managed to get onto the school website. Parents do not have to have any church affliation to obtain a school place, also you can withdraw your child - see here

Fimbo · 28/01/2008 13:43

And the house next door to me is up for rent!

MegBusset · 28/01/2008 14:25

Boco what is Brundall like?

(thank you everyone for taking the time to answer my squillion questions, by the way!)

Brundall has a nice non-affiliated primary school - at least it was when I went there. It's a very pleasant village on the Norfolk Broads but I get the impression it's also quite pricey. It's only a few miles out of Norwich and on the A47 so easily linked to the M11. Great Yarmouth and the coast are not far away either.

Fimbo · 28/01/2008 14:40

There is a massive new development going on at Cringleford if you like new build, there will be a new primary school built. You can walk to Waitrose.

MegBusset · 28/01/2008 14:42

Cringleford was one option but a little too close to where MIL lives (like Kirsty says on Relocation, we want to live near enough to go for tea, but far enough that she can't drop in unannounced!).

Hope I'm not sounding too fussy

I think you might like Brooke (towards Bungay) or Wicklewood (nr Wymondham). Both have arguably better access to Suffolk/London than villages towards Brundall/Surlingham way would.

Brundall too close to the A47 and other manic roads for my liking. Brundall would actually be a good place for us to live for DH to commute to work, but I'm not a village-type person. Though there is a train line from Brundall into Norwich would is quite nice for city centre outings (I hate driving into Norwich city centre).

Fimbo · 28/01/2008 14:50

What about villages the other side of Wymondham, say Deopham, Morley St Boltoph/Peter, Great Ellingham, Little Ellingham, Spooner Row, Hingham, Barnham Broom, Wicklewood to name a few.

Most of those have their own primary schools.

worley · 28/01/2008 20:30

bungay way is good too, beccles ? about 18 miles south of norwich, im in carlton colville which has a brilliant primary school and middle, direct train link to norwich and london.

oops

Hi,

A bit late but have you considered Trowse?

Very close to Norwich and especially the station. Little village feel but as near as a suburb so you could consider Norwich schools too. Lovely green/park and pubs.

pralinegirl · 15/02/2008 21:23

Would recommend Hethersett, maybe Poringland? Blofied nice and excellent primary although oversubscribed. Thorpe End lovely but no pub or school within walking distance!
Fimbo are you really Scotish - so am I!
Where are you from originally there?

pralinegirl · 15/02/2008 21:25

Forgot Brooke, Trowse and Postwick.... Have a look.

Fimbo · 17/02/2008 16:46

Dundee, my dh is a snob and usually says near Edinburgh! You? There are loads of Scots in Hethersett. For some reason though they are all ancient!

throckenholt · 17/02/2008 16:59

bit late to this - but if you want to commute to London from south of Norwich then you want to be down towards Diss a bit more (mainline to London from Diss to London via Ipswich and Colchester - takes about 1.5 hours I think). Somewhere like Burston has its own school, Tivetshall, Pulham, Dickleburgh. They are all maybe 15 miles from Norwich.

Or somewhere near Banham, New Buckenham etc (New Buckenham I think has a secondary - as does Diss, Attleborough, Long Stratton and Wymondham).

throckenholt · 17/02/2008 17:00

ps - Little Melton has a good primary school (just scanning your posts - didn't notice that mention before my last post).

pralinegirl · 17/02/2008 18:44

Fimbo, am from near AIRDRIE, between Glasgow and Edinburgh but closer to Glasgow. I went to uni in Aberdeen at 17 though so barely know Glasgow at all!

What do you call ancient and why so many Scots in Hethersett? I am 42 and have trained my 23 yr old assistant at work (by means of torture and threat of awful references!) to refer to anyone my age as 'young', (we generally ask when you work with neurological conditions how old the patient is when they get referred) - but he makes me feel ancient!
Soory to hijack your thread MegBusset but bit of info - a close friend has her four year old at little melton school and really likes it - she lives in hethersett. Hes been there since September.

MegBusset · 17/02/2008 19:54

Ooh, thanks for new responses

We went to Norwich last weekend and had a bit of a recce... looked at Stoke Holy Cross and decided it was too small, Brundall which didn't appeal to us, and Wymondham which I actually rather like the look of, so that is a strong contender atm.

Hethersett and Dereham are also on our list but we didn't have time to check them out, will go next time we're up there.

Also we looked at Trowse, which is beautiful and we would love to move there. The only thing is that most of the cottages in the village itself would be too small for us -- the bigger places seem to be out of our budget but we are deffo going to keep an eye out because it just looks lovely, and so convenient for the city.

PG are you cattable?

pralinegirl · 18/02/2008 18:12

Fimbo
I am lost - what does cattable mean?!

pralinegirl · 18/02/2008 18:18

Fimbo - sorry - bit dense today - looked it up, means contactable? and have just added this option now - feel free to try!Sorry have had weird day....

cazboldy · 18/02/2008 18:26

worley - I am very near Bungay! and it is lovely

and my children go to school in Loddon - as they are excellent schools, as you quite rightly said
