Small downstairs loo: to tile or not to tile?

We’re mid extension and having a small downstairs loo put in. I’d originally assumed we would only put in a few small tiles as a splashback near the sink but my dad looked horrified at the mere suggestion and said it MUST be tiled, at least halfway (ie half tiles and paint above).

If you have a small downstairs loo, is it tiled? We need to decide ASAP so the builder can line up a tiled….

We chose paint except around sink.

Regret this. Guests, I dunno who (kids and tradesmen?), splash when using the loo. Paintwork already ruined in the grossest way. Now need to take toilet out to tile behind it 😩

Wow, thanks for all your thoughts! Kind of relieved there is no consensus on this….I’m inclining towards doing the splashback round the sink and leaving it at that.

@Sporty2022 , that’s an interesting idea and I can see the benefit of plastic but I’m not a huge plastic fan personally if it’s avoidable.

@Isabelle70 , I can see why that’s your inspiration photo - looks lovely!

We have a tiny downstairs loo with a tiny washbasin. We tiled the splashback and painted the rest. The floor is also tiled.

My neighbour (identical downstairs loo) has tiled hers half way up and I think it makes it look smaller.

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination , great user name, by the way - that’s a fair point. I was thinking if we went plain tiles, we’d vary the look by being able to change the paint more easily. I’ve been on Pinterest but struggling and need to make a decision ASAP as we hadn’t budgeted for tiling but it would need to happen before sanitary ware is fitted.

How much would you expect to pay for tiling? The whole loo is around 2m by 1m and we’d only be looking for half height.

I wouldn't do it in such a rush. It's a brilliant room to do something you love. Why not just paint for now, then take your time to de use what you'd really like?!

there are some fabulous wall papers, I'd never put in a large room you're in all the time, but absolutely brilliant for the smallest room in the house, with or without tiles.

bathroom paint, even behind the sink will last ages before it needs redoing. You can see if you think you need to tile behind the toilet. If you do, it's really no great hardship to empty the loo, unbolt it, tile & replace, it's really not.

@Sprig1 , what would you suggest? Paint? Panelling? I’m not keen on the latter as although I like the look, it’s such a small room.

I would paint it. You can change it as often as you like without breaking the bank and if it gets dirty you can always just give it a wipe.
