Small downstairs loo: to tile or not to tile?

We’re mid extension and having a small downstairs loo put in. I’d originally assumed we would only put in a few small tiles as a splashback near the sink but my dad looked horrified at the mere suggestion and said it MUST be tiled, at least halfway (ie half tiles and paint above).

If you have a small downstairs loo, is it tiled? We need to decide ASAP so the builder can line up a tiled….

Ours isn’t tiled but I do wish we’d half tiled it, just for visual interest really.

We used eggshell paint which I recommend if you’re not tiling as it is wipe clean (it is a bit sheeny though so shows up lumps & bumps in the wall).

I have a small downstairs loo and just have a couple of big tiles behind the small sink. Rest is just painted. Don’t think I ever even thought of getting tiles. Tiles cost a fortune.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 03/09/2022 08:02

No tiles here. I'm not very good at tiling and wouldn't get someone to put half a dozen tiles up. Just painted with a glossy paint. The room doesn't get damp as there's no shower/bath in there - are tiles necessary? They make a room cool I think.

Also means you can redecorate your downstairs loo more frequently - small room means you can go wild with bold colours, funky wallpaper etc without blowing a budget or having to live with a (in hindsight) bad choice in your face.

Nah we’ve just got four tiles & then painted it in Downpipe with bronze accessories.

KangarooKenny · 03/09/2022 08:05

I’ve just tiled the splash back on the sink. I prefer to be able to change the colour easily by painting the walls.

miserablecat · 03/09/2022 08:07

We've got metro tiles half way in our downstairs cloakroom, but we have an upstairs toilet that is hardly ever used that just has one large tile above the basin and the rest is painted

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 03/09/2022 08:08

We are having ours done up soon and it will be tiled halfway ish.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/09/2022 08:09

Ours is just painted with a small tiled splashback above the sink.

Sporty2022 · 03/09/2022 08:11

Would you consider the plastic wall panels? Easy to put up, come in lots of patterns and colours. No maintenance just wipe them clean.
Last year we got our main bathroom done with plastic wall panels, then our en suite.

We then decided to get our small downstairs toilet done too. Don’t have to worry about paint flaking off or getting smudged, or worry about tiling and grouting.
No maintenance!

Sporty2022 · 03/09/2022 08:12

Oh and if you want a change, you just take the panels off and put new ones up! No mess.

Sporty2022 · 03/09/2022 08:14

I said plastic wall panels- I think they are actually PVC. But same thing really

yomellamoHelly · 03/09/2022 08:31

We're about to have one put in. Fully tiled (as I don't clean as often as I should). Friend has one that isn't tiled (just 2 behind the sink as a splashback), but she looks after it and it's pristine.

AmbushedByCake · 03/09/2022 08:36

Just a tiled splashback, so I was able to buy beautiful but v expensive tiles

My downstairs loo is a long awaited project.. I have the basin and toilet and have spent so long trying to find the perfect tiles I have given up! This is my inspiration photo and I am now going to go for wood panelling then paper or paint on top

AtillatheHun · 03/09/2022 09:04

Wallpaper! The most outrageous you like, with a clear panel over it as a splash back. Boys might pee on the floor (tiled) but surely not up the walls?

JHMUML · 03/09/2022 09:10

We have pvc panels, you can get all kinds of designs these days, some look like tiles.
It’s brilliant to keep clean and very easy to change design over the years.

Vicliz24 · 03/09/2022 09:13

Ours is painted as is our bathroom away from the shower/ bath . I prefer to be able to change colours when the mood takes me . Kitchen and Bathroom paint is very durable.

mdh2020 · 03/09/2022 09:13

We painted our downstairs look when it was put in and totally regret it. Tiling looks nicer.

TheTeddyBears · 03/09/2022 09:45

I've never seen a wc fully tiled not sure I would like it. Not sure why I imagine it might feel smaller 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'd do half tiling or tile around sink splashback.

Pollywoddles · 03/09/2022 09:54

The house we bought has a tiny loo under the stairs. It’s fully tiled and it’s horrific. When I’m in there I’m so close to the tiles that I can see every little flaw in the grouting and laying of those tiles.

We’re renovating shortly and I’m not going to put tiles in there.

MrsBwced · 03/09/2022 10:05

We used to have half the wall tiles in our old downstairs loo and I got sick of the tiles.
We have minimal tiles in our new downstairs loo, I just paint the walls when I get fed up and it looks like a new room.

IvebeenUpAllNightNoSleep · 02/09/2022 22:12

With a tight budget I’d personally go with No tiles. Unless you were doing them yourselves?

for a downstairs loo definitely not essential! Use kitchen/bathroom wipeable paint so you can clean properly around loo etc.

Exactly.

I like a half tiled wall too - but it’s just a look, there is no need for it in a loo. Paint is fine.

Do not do this though..

I still love metro tiles and have white in my current main (and only) bathroom with wild patterned dark wallpaper. People always comment that they love our bathroom.

We’re in the process of buying a house with a downstairs loo but it’s a more modern house and I want to do more mid-century modern vibes. I’m weirdly very excited about having a downstairs loo to decorate! I intend to tile halfway up the wall, though am unsure about whether to go with terrazzo style or Kit Kat tiles. There will be a very bold colour paint on the rest of the walls, and possibly on the ceiling.

Davethecat2000 · 03/09/2022 10:33

We have a tiny downstairs loo too, so just have a small tiled splashback.

Small downstairs loo: to tile or not to tile?
