What is the strangest thing you have come across during a house move that has either been left or taken?

Our friends completeted last year and the woman they bought from took the ring squat of vinyl in the downstairs toilet along with the toilet seats - she didn't leave any other toilet seats just completely left the loos bare... I found it so odd so wondered what was the strangest thing you found taken or were left?

Is squat meant to be square?

Is squat meant to be square?

Possibly....but preceded by the word "ring"?

SurpriseSurprise · 31/08/2022 13:59

A massive 80’s (I’m guessing) vibrator. It took those massive square batteries and had a notice on it that it could possibly interfere with TV signal

Maireas · 31/08/2022 13:59

Do you think the OP means the vinyl flooring? What could the other words mean?

HiVisAndWellies · 31/08/2022 14:30

The ring squat of vinyl is surely the vines upholstery/padding you sometimes get on toilet seats?

We found pictures of the vendors having a swingers party, hidden in a secret cupboard under the stairs. The others in the photos, were the neighbours across the road!

Do not say Yes if they invite you round for a glass of wine 😬

They left all the shed contents; good quality gardening tools, pots, compost, propagators etc. We did contact them but they never returned for them. Also found a Victorian iron, cobblers anvil, massive lawn roller. Indoor pot plants. Two stag wardrobes. We were quite happy with all of it tbh, we were ftb and they saved us a packet!

Back in the early ‘80s my parents bought an old farmhouse. Huge and very higgledy-piggledy. They bought some furniture off the vendors. Down the side of one of the ancient sofas they found a bag of gold sovereigns. My dad gave them to the vendors. My mum was furious.

ThisIsAddiction · 31/08/2022 15:56

When I sold my late mums home (and my childhood home), the buyer had been very taken with a large ornate mirror in the bedroom that fitted as if it were made for the space between the built in wardrobes and the large brass fender that surrounded the fireplace in the lounge. As I didn't have much use for them myself I left them in situ, though could have sold them.

Imagine my surprise then on completion when the buyers husband calls DH, apoplectic with rage, to complain a single wall storage unit had been left in the garage. It was an empty unit I add, and as a proper garage storage unit not something we'd even considered removing. He was furious, demanding husband came and removed it "IMMEDIATELY!"

DH bless him is a lot calmer and thinks things through more than me who tends to go up like a rocket. He calmly apologised for the oversight, told him he'd be there that evening to dispose of the unit, and if they could also leave out the ornate mirror and fender that had also been left in the property we'd take those too.
Much spluttering and backtracking ensued and finally buyer said it was all ok and he'd sort it himself after all.

If I had a time machine I'd have taken bloody everything. Bastards.

We have recently moved from a house with a large garden to a flat. Our biggest worry was that the buyers would refuse our offer to leave all our garden kit. Luckily they were really pleased to take it (and the piano that we would otherwise probably have had to sell for pennies or pay someone to take away).

cptartapp · 31/08/2022 16:12

We left an old heavy paint stained chest of drawers in my mum's garage that my dad had used over many years to store his tools.
They probably took an axe to it.

It was weeks after I moved into my house that I noticed the sellers had taken the house number plaque. I don't remember it being particularly special such as a hand painted one which might have been a gift, so not sure why they would want it, as not much use unless moving to a house with the same number.

We moved to a house with the same number, but didn't take our house number plaque! Yes, the only reason I can think of for taking it would be handmade/gift.

Used condoms on the floor of the sitting room.

Not impressed.

We moved into a house 5 years ago and found a strange micky mouse toy. I phoned the previous owner to ask if it was theirs. They responded with no, however when they bought the house as a new home from the developers she noticed it proudly standing up on the floor and tried to return it. The admin lady told her it appeared in the house and no idea who owns it and thought it was thrown away so she threw it away too. She was shocked when i told her i have it. We have left him here. We now refer to him as Micky House.

Well, if it was from the Ming dynasty it might have been valuable?

MrsMitford3 · 31/08/2022 17:29

I am even more perplexed by a ming square of vinyl-

surely they didn't have vinyl back then ????

Pishposh99 · 31/08/2022 17:32

Mine took the integrated washing machine and the nobs from the oven (the ones you twist turn turn it on etc)

sleepyduvetcat · 31/08/2022 17:39

I think I’ve told this before but we moved into an end of terrace house. There was a bit of land on the side and the previous owner had built an extension giving an extra reception room downstairs and a loft space that you could walk (crouch) into from the third bedroom upstairs.

We were renting and told to be careful to use the beams if storing things in there as it wasn’t fully boarded. DH managed to miss one of the beams and put his foot through the ceiling.

We found that, between some thin layers of insulation, someone had stashed hundreds of top-shelf porn magazines under the boards that dated back over the previous 15 or so years.

We let the landlord know about the accident and had a builder come in to make it right but didn’t tell him about the magazines as we suspected they belonged to his late Dad.

Moved into my first property age 24, forty years ago. Arrived with man and van who put my few bits into the flat and then left.

Only when I switched on a light did I find the vendors had taken with them every light bulb in the entire flat AND the toilet seat.

It was 4pm on winter's Friday evening, and pouring with rain, and I had no car, and there was no phone to ring a taxi, and I had no umbrella or mac, and had no idea where the nearest phone box would be to call a cab. Back in those days shops closed at 5pm.

I had no choice but to spend the evening in darkness as I had no candles nor a torch, and I had to take a poo on a loo without a seat (and in the dark!).

In the morning I took a bus to the shopping area to purchase bulbs and a toilet seat.

Forty years later I'm still cross!

The sellers of our house took the lid of a safe which was set into concrete in the garage floor.

My DF, who was our solicitor, argued that it was indeed part of the safe (that they had agreed to leave) and not an accessory. Without the lid it was just a metal lined hole in the floor.

They were a secretive lot and agreed to meet our solicitor at a motorway service station to hand it over. Thanks Dad.

Ming square of vinyl.

Nope, still in the dark.

SoupDragon · 01/09/2022 13:21

Did they have vinyl in the Ming dynasty?

JuneOsborne · 01/09/2022 13:25

Ming ring.

Nope can't get an autocorrect thing going on that might explain what the hell all this means!

Here for the updated update!

When my DD moved into her first house, the plumber found a carefully wrapped rectangular object tied up with string in her loft. We were very excited to see what was inside. A lump of wood! Why it was so carefully preserved is a mystery.
