Front door colour

Wondering whether to change front door colour....

Property is a chalet bungalow. White windows and currently a (new so don't want to replace) painted white wooden door.

Looking to sell in not too distant future so pondering door colour while we have dry weather.

What do you think is most likely to appeal to buyers? It is a family house in a village setting with lots of greenery and colour in the front garden, if that makes a difference.

There is a detached garage with wooden doors so I would look to paint those to match.

TIA 😊

Chartwell green seems to be popular round here. As does anthracite grey - please don't do this.
I liked a pale blue door we saw last week.
Think we are probably going to end up with datk blue y tho, as the standard colours seem to be black, white, red, grey, green and blue.

Thank you 😀

I absolutely hate the grey trend, so will definitely be avoiding that!
Blue seems "safe". I like the sound of a light blue, but wonder about the garage , might be too much to have that light blue too?

Will peruse paint charts!

I think it depends what colour the masonry/brickwork is. With red bricks a bright red, a dark blue, or even a bright yellow can look great if you're feeling brave. With yellow brickwork a mid blue/green often looks good. Finally there's a house around the corner from me with white rendered exterior walls. They have a dark blue front door and deep red roses in containers either side of the door- I always think how lovely it looks when I walk past. I think if you pick something that complements the exterior of your house it can be a good thing to go a little braver when you're trying to sell your house- it can make it stand out from the crowd (in a good way!) Remember as well you generally need to go a bit bolder with front doors than you would for paint surfaces inside, everything looks a little more washed out in the daylight.

PigletJohn · 22/08/2022 16:09

there's no reason to suppose the new owner will share your taste. Why not white?

comfortablyfrumpy · 22/08/2022 18:04

Thank you everyone. Food for thought.

@PigletJohn it could stay white -, I just wondered if that was too bland.

Yes. White is bland. We have Parma Grey by F&B. No, it’s not grey. It’s pale blue. We have it with yellow hue bricks and it’s great. It’s commented on positively. I think Purbeck stone would be great with red bricks. I would keep the garage white. You don’t want matchy matchy over large areas. Use chrome door furniture.

Brights can turn people off. Be careful.

If you assume that new people will notmuch like your choice of colour anyway, a bland colour will trigger fewer violent dislikes. White is pretty ubiquitous, since there are a lot of plastic doors around.

NotMeNoNo · 22/08/2022 23:26

Wooden doors are really easy to repaint so it's not the end of the world if a buyer wants to change it. I would go for a mid/deep colour as pale colours tend to get grubby. Keep the frames white and they will set off the colour nicely. Since paint comes in loads more colours than plastic you can have something other than the basic colours. I think that light green is a bit overdone but this is a nice deep green "GOBLIN" by Little Greene if you have red bricks.

Take a picture of your house and you can try different colours on it on a computer.

Don't know where my picture fell off to!

When you want to sell a house, kerb appeal
matters. When people get a picture of the house or draw up outside, it is important the house is pleasing. When you are painting a front door, it matters. Don’t go quirky. Don’t go white. Find the colour that complements the exterior. We find looking around an area gives you the best (snd worst) of ideas! Looking at upmarket paint brands also gives inspiration. What works in a similar property?

TizerorFizz · 23/08/2022 07:49

Im posting a few ideas. - I guess these are not chalet bungalows but they do all look smart. I’ve included a white door. However look at the exterior! It’s far from bland.

We have a cream composite door, I know it's not wooden but we went for a premium colour. People have commented on the colour choice as it's simple but stands out amongst the Grey's, blues and whites in the area but it's not gaudy and is to most people's tastes.

Youaremysunshine14 · 23/08/2022 09:37

I'd go for an eye catching bright blue.

@TizerorFizz there are a lot if those sagey greens around here (v traditional for these parts -(think Cotswold stone cottages or wannabees)
I don't know if it would be good or bad to go with the flow?
I think I am leaning towards a soft blue along the lines of Parma gray.
@Youaremysunshine14 I love that - but worry it will be too bold.

Current thinking is parma gray (or cheaper lookylikey) for front door and darker gray for the garage doors..... I am anticipating paint discounts thus weekend (Bank hol) so will take my chance :)

Thank you everyone.

Dark grey and Parma Grey don’t go so well in my view. Parma Grey is not Grey. It’s really a blue. So look at Hague Blue for the garage. Or go lighter to Borrowed Light.

TizerorFizz · 23/08/2022 14:05

These might work. They are colours that F&B think go. There are others but I think these are good for exterior pairings.

Can I please ask a question for those who mention Farrow & Ball colours? Do Farrow & Ball do gloss suitable for external doors or do you get crown or similar to colour match it with their bespoke mixer? Thanks

TizerorFizz · 27/08/2022 21:37

@R00tat00tt00t
F&B do a gloss but I’ve never used it. I find gloss more difficult to use and I’m never really keen on the finish for our house. I don’t live in a 10 Downing Street type of house! It does look great in dark colours though. We always use F&B Exterior Eggshell - it has a satin finish.

LucyLoopyLu · 27/08/2022 21:44

We have a new front door in Farrow and Ball "Pigeon". It's meant to be a blue grey but I think it looks more green than blue.
It's a lovely shade - warmer than grey and also I think more interesting than the cotswold type greens you see a lot (although I love all green)!

frazzled101 · 27/08/2022 21:47

My door is similar to this one, I love it.

Thanks @TizerorFizz - that's really helpful. I'm not keen on gloss either but DH, in his wisdom, thinks exterior paintwork has to be gloss...I'll take a look at the exterior eggshell and convince him otherwise!

TizerorFizz · 29/08/2022 14:36

@R00tat00tt00t
It really does not have to be gloss. The eggshells for exterior wood are very hard wearing. They just don’t have that shine. The F&B gloss is water based so not like the gloss paints of old. I would never use gloss on windows or internally. The eggshell is much easier on the eye!
