Just that really - we are looking to relocate to Shrewsbury and would like to know the good and bad of the town - thanks in advance

Hi I am in Shrewsbury, moved here last year. What would you like to know specifically? I cannot help with schools as my teens are at college here (one just finished and the other in his last year of A-levels).

I relocated as I absolutely love the place and my h had always wanted to live here but am sadly moving back to my home town next year as my marriage has broken down.

Do you know the area? Have you visited and what sort of house are you looking for? There are a lot of period properties, the town is stunning, good community and people are proud to live here - that is what I have learnt since being here.

Oldbutnotdead · 08/08/2022 20:53

Downside floods in places, hospital been in the media a lot of late and a few not pleasant areas to live. On the other hand lovely historical buildings, good schools private and state, plenty of supermarkets, just missing Waitrose I think.
Lots of new houses being built on most sides of town.
I don't live in the town but a village outside.

macshoto · 08/08/2022 21:05

Shrewsbury still has a good number of independent shops. The Flower Show and Folk Festival are both good events.

Tanner's, the wine merchant, are one of the top wine merchants in the country.

Main downside is flooding.

Oh and the council has grand plans to redevelop the shopping centre they bought at great expense just prior to the pandemic - so public services are likely to be budget constrained even more than in other places.

I’m from Shrewsbury, it’s a lovely place to live. Lots to do in the town and gorgeous countryside all around.

If I could afford it I’d be looking at a village close to the town rather than right in town but that’s just me and my dream 😃

What’s your budget and are you needing to be close to schools/transport links etc?

Lovingtheglitter · 09/08/2022 06:01

Thanks so much for all the replies sounds a pretty positive place to live! Our budget is around 400,000 and our children have grown up and away but will need room for when they visit.
We currently live in the midlands and wanted a place to live that has a lot going on that we can get involved in - mainly arts.
Will keep a look out for potential flooding - thank you for the heads up!

I am from the Midlands and will be moving back next year, you can buy my house if you like 😜Although flooding is a problem there are not many properties that flood thankfully. My advice about buying is to visit and have a good walk around the areas and get a feel, it is what we did and it really helped. We did have a Waitrose but that closed down, there is every other supermarket you can think of within driving distance though.

Best places within walking distance to the town are

Porthill
Cherry Orchard
Belle Vue
Copthorne
Coleham
Belvidere
Castlefields

I run a few times a week and for my dc to be at college it was top of my list to be able to walk into town, I didnt want to have to get in a car all the time. I don't think I could ever tire of it it is such a beautiful place to live.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 09/08/2022 06:52

Also if you are on Facebook (it is worth signing up if not) there is a fab group called 'For the love of Shrewsbury'. There is always so much going on and lots of lovely photos and memories from the group, well worth following.

gunnersgold · 09/08/2022 08:56

We have friends there , it's soo cheap ! For the value of our very nice 4 bed we can get a huge house there ! I'd love to live there but family keeps me here !🙄🙄

Lovingtheglitter · 09/08/2022 11:02

Thanks so much for the info I will check out the Facebook page and spend weekends there to get a general feel of the place. Thanks for all of the replies

How close to town do you want to be? Searching SY3 on Rightmove is generally a good place to start. Parts of SY2 are also lovely. Lots of lovely villages and surrounding areas if you're wanting to be a bit out of town.

Onaj · 25/08/2022 16:01

My partner and I came to Shrewsbury on a short break just over a year ago. The friendliness of the town really struck a cord with us, even though we were all still in Covid restrictions.

We came back for a week this May, to see if we still felt the same about the place. We did.

Fast forward to July, and with myself self employed, my partner able to work from home and youngest (adult) son back living with us we thought why not move to Shrewsbury?

So that's what we're doing, fingers crossed.
It's a huge decision, I'm leaving very good friends and an area I've lived in for over 35 years.

I'm excited and apprehensive in equal measures.
Time to pull on my big girl pants and give this big move a whirl. Don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering what if 😟😁🤔

Muddybrownlegohair · 25/08/2022 16:04

Oh my gosh I am SO jealous. I've just come home from Shrewsbury and I didn't want to leave. Was only there for the weekend.

I live near Exmoor but my God, Shrewsbury is so beautiful, bustling and spacious (not squished between two coasts like the SW!)

I keep looking at houses and jobs. The pay there is better than here. For my role it's £10k more!

Anyway, you lucky thing. Good luck!! X

Muddybrownlegohair · 25/08/2022 16:07

@Onaj ahhhh you lucky lucky person!!! Maybe we should go for it too?

I seriously want to. Its bang on in the middle of in laws and my family too. It would bring us closer (they live further north and don't see them often due to distance!)

This thread is lovely, exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure (for me, because I'm oh so tempted!!!) Haha

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 25/08/2022 16:14

You will love it! I moved here last year and it's so so beautiful every day is like being on holiday. Defiantly join the Facebook group For the love of Shrewsbury (I signed up to FB just for the group). So much to see and do, I am sure you're making the right decision x

Lovingtheglitter · 25/08/2022 17:39

I joined for the love of Shrewsbury fb page and there's some really lovely things on there that I would love to do! We are there actually this weekend for the music festival so will scout out a bit more - we are planning some weekends there later this year with a view to move next summer hopefully!!
I have also been where I live for 35 years and feel really sad leaving my friends but just feel it's the right thing to do and also feel if we don't do it soon then we probably never will! So exciting but nervous in equal measure!!

Late to your thread. I live in Shrewsbury. I grew up here but moved away after uni in my 20s. Moved back in 2020, after 18yrs in Yorkshire in order to be near my parents and DH and I loved visiting the town / area when we came to see them.

Despite buying when we moved down, we’re about to move again as we want to be closer into town and be in a different secondary catchment. It’s been a hard market to buy in and we missed out on so many, but things are slowing down now looking at rightmove. The flooding, despite its frequency, doesn’t affect too many residential areas in town, it’s my area of industry so thankfully I know where to avoid.

The only thing we really miss is our friends, the presence of more mainstream shops (it’s great for independents, high street less so) and quick access to an Arena for big shows / gigs, but we gained so much in the move. The architecture, history, festivals and events plus beautiful countryside make it a great place to be.

good luck with the move

It's the friends bit that's worrying me most. Currently live in MK where vast majority of people have moved to the city from elsewhere, so are open to and looking for new friends.

With a much more established population in Shrewsbury I fear that although people are friendly, will they actually want / need to increase their friendship group?

Sorry for the delay in replying but i was actually in Shrewsbury this weekend attending the folk festival!
I have similar worries to you - it can be tricky making new friends but I can't have that hold me back - i really want to get involved in a local community and hopefully making friends will follow

Hope you enjoyed your weekend. There are so many groups to join, also volunteering if thats your thing. They have a brilliant Food Share scheme which I would like to get involved with. Also Meetup is a great way of finding groups. I hope you enjoyed the weekend - I could hear it from where I live and it sounded fun!

Onaj · 01/09/2022 09:29

Thank you for your reply.
I'll definitely be joining local groups and looking for volunteering roles (made some of my best friends that way), just know that it'll be tough at first not having friends around that I can just pop in and see or go for a coffee with.
