Decorator painted whole house wrong colour

I’ve just come to check on a rental property to find that the whole house has been painted dulux jasmine white rather than almond white which is what I specified. I have almond white in my own house and like it which is why I asked for it. I don’t know if it’s just a different house and different light but this looks so different. Is it? Has anyone swatched both? Would you say something ?

YANBU, If you said you wanted Almond White, that’s what the decorator should have ordered. I hope you have that in writing OP? Very surprised by the previous comments, saying Jasmine White is nicer shade etc, totally misses the point. If
I had paid a decorator and they had painted the wrong shade, I wouldn’t be happy at all.

Nope nothing in writing unfortunately. I saw him copy it onto a note pad. Obviously I won’t be making this mistake again

So I had jasmine white in a bedroom in an old flat, and almond white in our bathroom in the last house. In this house I painted a room with a small window jasmine white because I found it a lovely colour the first time, so warming and welcoming and to be honest it looks completely different in this house with different light! I don't really like it but I've put loads of pictures up and the room is now a play room so it doesn't show much.

The almond white is a lot darker than jasmine white though.

The rest of the house is rock salt and that is the best colour of them all (not at all helpful; I am aware!) 😁

IncompleteSenten · 30/07/2022 20:24

What kind of professional painter leaves paint splatter on floors are surfaces? I'd be more pissed off about that than the wrong shade of white paint tbh.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 30/07/2022 20:25

@zaffa that’s ok lol. Just wade on into the white vs white convo 😆. Aware in the grand scheme of things, this is all total nonsense.

The hall/stairs/landing of the converted house where I rent a flat was painted some time ago in Jasmine White. I know as I let in the decorator.

Seven years on it's been bashed to shite by bicycles and it looks rubbish.

If I can ever get the landlord to agree to repaint it, I'll buck the trend and plead for Almond White!

Aaaah I spent ages choosing the various white shades, and researching how the direction of windows affects the colour etc; it is a very serious topic of conversation!

I do actually think there is a noticeable difference between the colours having had them both, but the almond white may well have looked very different anyway based on the direction your windows faced. I found jasmine white much better for rooms with north facing windows.

It's annoying, I'd mention it and probably expect some sort of explanation or possible discount. Did he buy the tins of paint and invoice you, or is it possible it was just left over from another job he had? I'd definitely want to see invoices. Have you paid yet?

Gingernaut · 30/07/2022 20:30

What does it matter? You won't be living there.

As long as he did a half decent job, there's no problem.

If you paid for an expensive, branded paint, he fobbed you off with Homebase own brand and then pocketed the difference, you'd have an issue.

As it is, you paid for Dulux, you got Dulux and a painted house.

Helpinghand77 · 30/07/2022 20:31

I had exactly the same thing happen but my decorator painted my rental flat natural calico instead of natural hessian. I just accepted it as it looked fresh, clean and was a similar neutral and I wasn't going to be living with it.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 30/07/2022 18:39

They look very similar although Almond White is a little darker. How does it look on the walls?

I have turned my eye comfort shield off on my phone and they are two very different colours. I would say something. Like, this isn't the colour I asked for, was it on offer? And then angle for a discount. However, as a renter I would much prefer the jasmine shade. It is brighter and much more what I would expect. The other shade is nice but would be what I'd paint say my hallway in or a shared entrance way.

But if it had been green instead of white would you think it was ok then?

christinarossetti39 · 30/07/2022 20:38

I would be more annoyed about the splashes to be honest - did you agree that he clear up?

I would mention the different colour, but unless I really hated the one that he'd done, I wouldn't ask him to do it again. Suggesting a goodwill discount would be fair enough, but the last thing you want him to do is leave you with another three hours of cleaning almond white off the floor!

wonkylegs · 30/07/2022 20:45

We've just had a decorator make a similar mistake in our house I asked for "Totally Nutmeg" and decorator used "Nutmeg White" . It's about 2 shades different and I ummed and ahhed about it but decided to discuss it with the decorator and see what he said. He insisted on buying the right paint and painting it all again. I'm glad he did because I think it would have annoyed me for a long time if I'd let it slide.
It may be different in a rental property and I may have accepted a discount or not paid for the paint in order to keep it from taking more time.
I'd be very annoyed if they hadn't cleaned up after themselves though. Even our shittest ever decorators have managed to do that.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 30/07/2022 20:52

Yes we’re losing money on it the longer the decorating takes so I’m not up for him to do it all again. I want it finished. We live a long way from the property and I can’t keep going there to clean up.

thiccapricot · 30/07/2022 20:52

It’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean

Whoatealltheminieggs · 30/07/2022 20:55

@Helpinghand77 I wish ours had made that mistake I quite like natural calico. I’ve used that before. I’ve just come home and just to torture myself a bit more I’ve just swatched the jasmine next to our almond white wall. I’ll probably still be staring at it tomorrow 😂

OP posts:
Whoatealltheminieggs · 30/07/2022 20:56

And I’ve used ‘just’ three times in a sentence. I think I need an early night

flashpaper · 30/07/2022 20:56

I know this isn't helpful in the slightest but we've just painted our lounge in almond white and I love it. It makes the room feel airy and light. I don't care if it's "out of style".
The jasmine white is also nice but I get what you mean about there not being a contrast with the ceiling.
As it's a rental, I'd probably just accept it, but next time make sure they've got it written down!

Oblomov22 · 30/07/2022 21:06

I would still text him. Thank you for the job, but it appears paint used is a but I thought we agreed b.

What's the worst that can happen?

Primatrying · 30/07/2022 21:09

It's the wrong colour and you had to clean up. I'd expect a discount.

For those saying they aren't that different - I had both as tester pots and to me they were MASSIVELY different and their appearance also varied hugely in different rooms. Almond white didn't work in my house and if a painter had used it I'd have been totally pissed.

Having said that, I wouldn't repaint it for a rental property.

MsBucket · 30/07/2022 21:10

Whoatealltheminieggs · 30/07/2022 18:47

I think I’m also annoyed because I’ve just spent three hours scraping paint off floors and surfaces so seeing the paint pots has irked me.

I think you should complain about having to scrape paint off floors Shock

LaPerduta · 30/07/2022 21:10

Sexismdoesntrule · 30/07/2022 18:50

I’m going to make a 5% profit on this house in rising house prices alone this year, adding that to the rent I’ll receive..

BUT JEEVES PAINTED THE FUCKING WHOLE THING THE WRONG SHADE OF WHITE

Should we see whether the OP has any Jasmine White left to paint the chip on your shoulder?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/07/2022 21:13

They're completely different colours , I'd be really irritated and want to know exactly why the shade is chosen wasn't used

Kerrrmieee · 30/07/2022 21:13

I know what you mean OP and there is a difference, Almond White is far cosier than Jasmine White. I know this because I've used both!

I think you shouldn't pay him in full, especially as he's left all the pods there. I'd start by asking why he chose Jasmine. It's a shame it wasn't in writing.

Dummycrusher · 30/07/2022 21:13

😂 I thought this thread was a piss take! It's a rental property. Both colours are of the same ilk - pale and neutral. The property is freshly decorated. It really, really doesn't matter that one was mistakenly used rather than the other. Get a grip!

Oblomov22 · 30/07/2022 21:15

@Dummycrusher
I completely disagree. Majorly. Seriously. What difference does it make this a rental property? You commission of job, you expect the person to do the job properly. Don't paint It's a different colour to what was agreed. Fact.
