Decorator painted whole house wrong colour

I’ve just come to check on a rental property to find that the whole house has been painted dulux jasmine white rather than almond white which is what I specified. I have almond white in my own house and like it which is why I asked for it. I don’t know if it’s just a different house and different light but this looks so different. Is it? Has anyone swatched both? Would you say something ?

I’m going to make a 5% profit on this house in rising house prices alone this year, adding that to the rent I’ll receive..

BUT JEEVES PAINTED THE FUCKING WHOLE THING THE WRONG SHADE OF WHITE

2bazookas · 30/07/2022 18:53

What you say is; " I won't pay for the paint because you used the wrong colour".

Or, ‘tradesman I hired to do a specific job, did the job wrong’.

ChuckItBucket · 30/07/2022 18:54

Two very similar shades of beige - I might ask for a discount on the cost of the paint but it’s not really that big of a deal for a rental property

Blue4YOU · 30/07/2022 18:54

I’d be irritated too but it might suit the house anyway? I’d be more pissed off about the splashes - that shouldn’t happen

CorvusPurpureus · 30/07/2022 18:54

I think I'd raise it, as in pointing out it's not the colour you requested, & see what you get back.

With no written agreement, it's your word against the decorator that you didn't just request a tinted white blank canvas, & didn't specify further.

He might give you a goodwill discount so you'll use him again/recommend him, but from what I hear tradies aren't currently scrabbling for work, so he might be happy just to bin you off as a future client.

All you can do is raise it & see where it gets you.

It's at least inoffensive & the tenants won't know or care, so no real harm done.

or
I paid someone to do a job and they didn’t do what I asked

I think your tenants might thank you for the jasmine white. Almond white is on a par with magnolia for being an out of date colour

This is exactly what I was going to say.

Completely irrelevant and yes, I would be annoyed if I was paying for any kind of professional job to be done and the contractor simply did what they fancied instead. It is CF behaviour on their part.

IrisVersicolor · 30/07/2022 19:02

If it were your own house it would really matter. As it’s not it really doesn’t.

Paint everywhere totally does - I would request a price reduction based on your 3 hours work.

It's not the end of the world but I would be annoyed and ask him why he used the wrong colour and didn't clean up

I would expect a discount

Have you made sure to take a photo of the paint pots and the spills?

We won’t be making anything on this house this year. Our tenants moved out, and left the place wrecked. It’s costing us nearly nine grand to do up again which we’ve had to borrow from my parents. as we’re struggling. I can’t afford to get industrial cleaners in so I’m doing it myself, while juggling three kids and a job. There is certainly no Jeeves

If you only asked for it over the phone, "dulux almond white" and "dulux jasmine white" actaully sound quite similar, esp if he gets asked for jasmine white a lot.

DappledThings · 30/07/2022 19:27

They're both basically whitey beige and nondescript. Does it really matter?

FAQs · 30/07/2022 19:27

That is an expensive paint for a whole house, trade white would have been better, the splashes sound more of an issue.

slowquickstep · 30/07/2022 19:28

If he had painted it black i would see your point but really there is no reason to get your knickers in a twist.

DramaticSunflower · 30/07/2022 19:28

How will you be able to prove to him that you wanted almond instead of Jasmin? If it was agreed verbally over the phone he could have easily misheard you.

Yes I have. I’ll have to ring him on Monday. I hate this sort of thing though

This.
You're not even living there. I doubt it'll make any odds to the tenants what particular shade of beige their walls are.

Pegasushaswings · 30/07/2022 19:34

I think before you ring him you need to decide what resolution you want? He shouldn’t get paint on floors and surfaces either!

userxx · 30/07/2022 19:36

Jasmine white looked yellow on my walls, I hated it.

lastminutedotcom22 · 30/07/2022 19:36

I wouldn't loose any sleep over it
It's your rental you don't live there I'm sure it looks fine as long as it's freshly decorated it will be fine

Pythonesque · 30/07/2022 19:37

You have my sympathies especially with regards to the poor finish.

However ... when we moved in here we had it painted white throughout for simplicity, except for two rooms. One was a south facing bathroom painted in a lemony yellow which works beautifully with the light. The other was the study, painted in my husband's preference of almond white. Unfortunately we didn't appreciate the impact of this colour in this particular room, and I realised almost immediately that it would have been much better with a "warm" white. I still don't enjoy using that room, and the baby we moved in with is doing his A levels ...

Roselilly36 · 30/07/2022 19:52

YANBU, If you said you wanted Almond White, that’s what the decorator should have ordered. I hope you have that in writing OP? Very surprised by the previous comments, saying Jasmine White is nicer shade etc, totally misses the point. If
I had paid a decorator and they had painted the wrong shade, I wouldn’t be happy at all.
