Recommend me a kitchen company that I can afford!

I love British Standard: britishstandardcupboards.co.uk/ but they are outside my price range. I know the quality probably won't hold up with cheaper options, but any recommendations for more affordable companies in a similar style?

I'm a big fan of IKEA kitchens. no fancy branding but they do last and you can get all sorts of different doors. My 10 year old IKEA kitchen has lasted just as well as my mum's kitchen from a ££££ designer (and mine is more practical).

SecondNature with custom doors from a joiner can also be a good option.

The kitchen depot fantastic service and fitting

Diy kitchens. Can’t recommend highly enough.

wow. Those are some seriously lovely cupboards. I was about to suggest DIY Kitchens - we've just had a whole Helmsley inframe kitchen fitted - but that might not be quite what you're after. Very good and very reasonably priced, though, and you could upgrade the handles and what-nots.

Doubleraspberry · 25/07/2022 18:12

Ikea doesn't have the colours I'm after really, so I'd need to paint them, which racks up the cost once you've paid for installation too. I like the SecondNature stuff though, and they have a couple of outlets near me, so might go and check out the quality. Thank you!

Ah, just refreshed to see all the DIY Kitchens recommendations! I did think of them as I've looked at them before but there was nothing quite right in their ranges, really lovely though some of them are.

They are new to me and I do like quite a few of their styles. I'll do some digging into costs, thank you.

That’s what grabbed my attention! You could always find different handles I guess ? Might price that up for mine then if we ever actually sell I could buy it 😀

ODFOx · 25/07/2022 18:54

Used kitchen hub and used kitchen exchange are what you seek. Get something really good quality but dated and pay for the paint.

Oh, really? I’ll have a look. Do they help you work out what you need and where or do you have to be a bright spark and do all that yourself?

We've just ordered a Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch kitchen in their half price annual sale. We went down to the showroom and they are properly lovely kitchens. I love British Standard/Plain English but can't possibly afford them, too, but HMK is a similar look and they make each unit exactly to your size specifications. That meant it came up the same price a DIY as we can order fewer, very large units (so 2 pan drawers well over a metre each, and a massive larder, and a unit next to the double sink that will be exactly the same size, instead of a standard one and then a weird tray space). They are so solid and well made, with dovetailed joints in drawer boxes etc. It's exactly what we wanted, but didn't think we could afford.

People on MN who have had one are thrilled with them, which is reassuring.

They're expensive outside the half price sale times, though. I suspect it's like wine and they intentionally price high in 'normal' periods. It's a way to control sales levels presumably - they can brace themselves for the biannual flood of sales, end that sale when order books are full, and if anyone wants to pay twice the standard pricing between those times, then it's worth their while taking the trickle of much more lucrative extra business on, as it won't ever be at a level that jeopardises their ability to deliver.

They can keep the prices down I think by offering one basic kitchen, same as British Standard. There are tweaks possible, but they really are just tweaks - added beading, sort of kick plate, that kind of thing. It's also a very classic Shaker on offer. But I love that style, and I love solidly built and heavy and not pre-assembled flatpack, so I'm very happy.

handmadekitchensofchristchurch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/2022-Price-List-Handmade-Kitchens-v2-6.pdf - that's the sale price list (look at the sizing options and then work out if you can eg get one large unit instead of 2 standard sized ones plus a filler kind, which has markedly reduced our spend).

I'd be fine with a Howdens one if we had to. But after visiting Howdens, and visiting HMKOC, they just aren't the same product at all. And we decided that as this kitchen is going to need to last a decade, and it's the largest room in the house and the one we'll live in, we want it done as we like it.

We did look at Used Kitchen Exchange, but again decided that by the time we'd paid a fitter to play Tetris with it, disposed of any extras, and had it sanded down, dents and scratches made good, and repainted, it would still be fairly expensive. And this way we can have exactly the floorplan we want, because it's being made to our specifications down to the millimetre.

It's a 20 feet by 13.3 feet kitchen, and we're having 3 walls with units. They are coming in at just over £8,000 with HMKOC. DIY came in at 9 for the Helmsley and Howdens a bit less. Obviously painting is an extra cost you don't have with the last two, but we feel it's worth it.

I'd go and visit all the options, and check the kitchen out really carefully. It is so, so much money to spend and you need to know you will be happy, living with it.

perfectstorm · 25/07/2022 20:02

Oh, but we won't use their handles. Dowsing & Reynolds make the styles we're after at a lot less. We'll need 14 cup pulls for example, and I don't think we can justify £36 a pop, however lovely they may be.

These are £8.99 - much more our level.

Doubleraspberry · 25/07/2022 20:29

Thank you. They do look really solid, simple and classy, and I can see from the price list how big cupboards can keep costs down. I’m not quite ready to order yet so I’ll have to surf for another sale, but I have close friends who live near Christchurch so I shall take the excuse to visit them and drag them over there in the nearish future.

Perfect storm, thanks for all the information on your kitchen. Are you going to paint the kitchen yourself or get a professional in? I would be interested to hear what the approximate costs would be to have it painted (I appreciate that it's dependant on kitchen sizes!). I haven't been to the show room as yet, but the kitchens look stunning, even better at sale prices 😛

Also do they have a planning service or is the expectation that you would provide a kitchen plan from elsewhere?

TIA

SollaSollew · 29/07/2022 10:41

Hi @Doubleraspberry we've had a Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch kitchen for just over a year now so if you have any questions am happy to help.

I'm really pleased with it btw, quality is brilliant and it looks waaaaaay more expensive than it was. What swung it for me in the end was the reeded glass in the glass door counter top units and being able to have a very simple style without any beading etc.

Volterra · 29/07/2022 12:20

@SollaSollew this might be a silly question but how do integrated appliances work?

SollaSollew · 29/07/2022 16:07

HI @Volterra

It depends on the appliance....

Dishwasher you buy a door only and that attaches onto the frame of the units next to it then you put a kick board underneath. You don't have a unit for it as such if that makes sense.

For a built in oven you buy specific housing based on the size of the oven/s you want.

For built in fridges they make a surround with a top box in the dimensions that you want.

Dishwashers tend to come in regular sizes but for everything else it's a good idea to know what appliances you're buying at and the dimensions before you order.

They do a design call with you and then you can go through everything. We wanted a specific style of cupboard for our boiler for example so we discussed the best way of getting what we wanted and they modified a unit for us.

HTH 😀
