...is this where architecture is just now?

Posh house, looks like a shed.

Are people who live in these sorts of places actually comfortable? Where do you put your feet up? Where do you put your mug of tea and the book you’re reading? How do you feel cosy when the wind is howling outside and the rain lashing the windows?

It would be like one of the US Cribs episodes, singer shows the crew around a massive mansion, (empty looking soulless but) designer sleek, then off they go down to the messy, lived in, 2 bed pool house, opens the fridge and its choc-a-bloc with a weekly shop😀

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/07/2022 22:12

Hmm. If I were one of the neighbours I'd be concerned this was actually a plan to get pp for a commercial building via the back door, especially given its proximity to Manchester Airport.

@BreadmanAndCake
aaa estate agents don’t you love them for so many reasons?

my fave ‘SORT after area’

HarrietSchulenberg · 23/07/2022 22:31

Those architects must live near me as they've clearly been inspired by our local swimming pool. It's currently closed and awaiting demolition so perhaps they're hoping they could just ship it straight onto a new plot.

Reminds me somewhat of the local crematorium

overitall1 · 23/07/2022 22:44

Who the hell has more bathrooms than bloody bedrooms? This fad is crazy.

Yellownotblue · 24/07/2022 00:08

I don’t find it as offensive as most posters seem to. But I agree the design could easily be improved and made more interesting.

There is a strong fetish for Victorian/Edwardian/Georgian homes in this country. Anything modern or postmodern attracts a chorus of disapproval. I like clean lines and purity of detail, but I know I’m in a minority.

People with enough money that will never be worried about not being able to pay the cleaner?

MrsMitford3 · 24/07/2022 07:07

Looks like my nasty modern primary school

BuanoKubiamVej · 24/07/2022 07:26

All thr pictures are CGI and I dout it will ever be built. Currently what is thrre is a nasty concrete 1960s-ish massive agricultural barn (see pic) behind a fairly nice redbrick farm house. The distribution centre vibe is because a cheap way to get to a basic building shell would be to add cladding to the existing structure, but it would be far better to knock the whole thing down and start again- but then the vedor would have to lower the asking price.

It’s really close to the airport - not a great location.

I’ve noticed that houses near (not next to) the airport are always expensive!

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2022 09:02

There's some similar I know about in East Cheshire in another location. It used to be a barn shaped like a distribution warehouse. They had to make the planning in keeping with this so it fitted in with the local area.

These are in the same council area so its clearly a planning policy rather than an architectural experiment. Tbh it is a building that won't look as out of place as you think in Mobberley.

The price tag is as you would expect too for the area.

The similar one I know really doesn't look out of place or remarkable in reality but I can understand it would look pretty stark on the planning and if you didn't know the area / location.

SolasAnla · 24/07/2022 10:36

I just noticed that its is landlocked too.

So some type of shared right of way would be needed or the council allow a new domestic road opening on land you would also have to buy as a separate lot.

To get a basement the shed would need to be knocked, the slurry tanks dug out, deeper dig to add the pool 1.5 stories down, the back of the shed landscaped down into the hole....

That's an expensive site.

Eastangular2000 · 24/07/2022 14:54

A lot of this type of design is a result of planning conditions that want the residential barn conversions to reflect the architectural vernacular of the building being converted which in these cases is a big tin shed.

Madcats · 24/07/2022 14:57

The pylons crossing the land will add to the aesthetics, i feel.

It's always useful to let Joe Public see where the safe room is going, I suppose.

puffylovett · 24/07/2022 15:05

It’s a conversion in Cheshire East. CEC are notoriously shit at allowing demolition rebuilds in this kind of scenario, and the architect has probably made the best of a bad job in all honesty. No architect worth his salt would want to create a building that looks like that. I would say this has been designed under restraints from Cheshire East.
(used to work for an architect in Cheshire east and we would come up against this all the time.)

Soontobe60 · 24/07/2022 15:23

Its literally 626m from the end of the runway at Manchester airport. And the plans also show 5 other ‘cottages’ to be build on the site.
I don’t think many plane spotters could afford that mortgage tbh!

People often share bedrooms. I don't see the issue with having more bathrooms. It's never a bad idea when you have guests

It's always good to know the reasons why stuff happens.
