Can I have a built under double oven and induction hob?

We’re planning a new kitchen and doing the rounds of designers (with a view to probably going with DIY Kitchens as the others don’t compare in terms of either price or quality so far). I’m finding the answers as to what we “can have” are varying from one store to another.

We are keen to have a double oven as we do a fair amount of cooking with both oven and grill. We currently have a gas hob and built under double oven. We were keen to change this to an induction hob and built under double oven. Magnet didn’t bat an eyelid at this but Howdens have said this isn’t an option with an induction hob and we can only have two single ovens side by side. Which is obviously going to lose a huge amount of storage space!

Has anyone else been told this? I’m trying to work out if it’s a safety thing and Magnet slipped up, or if it’s a Howdens thing.

We can only really have two full height units in this kitchen without compromising hugely on work surface. One has to be the fridge-freezer (as there is nowhere else for it to go, and nowhere to store an additional freezer and have an under-counter fridge). I’d wanted the other to be a larder but am thinking we may have to house the oven(s) here.

I would prefer not to move the hob as the only other place for it would be on a breakfast bar or peninsula and I want that to be clear for work surface and/or kids able to sit there while I cook.

The kitchen is going in a new extension so there’s a certain amount of flexibility at this stage as to what goes where.

Would welcome views from anyone with an induction hob and double oven(s), in whatever format!

Is this what you mean?

Was the advice given on the same model of oven and hob? Our induction hob needs a bit of clearance underneath, maybe that's why. We have a double oven in a tall unit with two deep drawers underneath and a cupboard above if that helps - lots of storage around! Under the hob we have 2 deep drawers and a cutlery drawer (which was just about fine with the clearance required)

I have a hot point built in double under oven and an induction hob right above it. No one said it was an issue? (Installed last year)

Soontobe60 · 20/07/2022 12:30

My DD has a singe oven under her hob. I think a double might be too much of a squeeze, plus it’ll get too hot if you’re using all 3 things at the same time,
Why don’t you think about having a double oven in a tall cupboard and deep drawers under your hob instead of a larder unit. It will take up the same amount of space.

MyCatIsNotFittingMyKitchen · 20/07/2022 12:39

@bilbodog , that’s exactly what Howdens have said we would have to have. I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m just surprised Magnet didn’t mention it.

@Soontobe60 , that is what I think we may have to do. It’s just that I really wanted a larder to get all the food into, rather than having it in an array of different cupboards. It’s trying to work out what to compromise on that I’m finding difficult at this stage.

@bravotango , it may be a brand thing. It’s just that if I do this myself on the DIY Kitchens planner, I want to be confident I’m not designing something that’s either unsafe or can’t be installed.

@nca , that’s interesting….

My oven is electric. I meant to say. It's not gas.

MyCatIsNotFittingMyKitchen · 20/07/2022 12:45

@nca , sorry, posted too soon. Was that part of an overall kitchen refit? Is the hob Hotpoint as well?

I can't remember what brand the hob is 😂😂😂 - new worktop was getting fitted, and some jigging around of cupboards. Not a full new kitchen but a half new kitchen lol.

nca · 20/07/2022 12:49

The hob isn't hotpoint. I don't remember the Brand - it was just the one the local electrical place recommended as a middle of the road option.

I was doing up to do for a wee while - new kitchen in about 5 years but I hated the slot in cooker and the sink so I changed them and added a cupboard and took one away for the dishwasher.

I had a built under double oven, one on top of the other. Both ovens were tiny and it was a bit of a waste

Crikeyalmighty · 20/07/2022 13:00

I have induction job but as you say the Neff double oven is built into a tall unit with cupboards above and below the ovens. As someone showed above is it possible to have on an island unit and side by side - ?

nca · 20/07/2022 13:05

This is what I have. I just can't find the hob book to see what brand it is right now

Also the laminate on the door lifting you can see to the right of the oven was lifting before the built in oven went in. In case you think the built in oven caused that!

GCAcademic · 20/07/2022 13:16

I think there’s a Smeg one that will fit under an induction job - or at least there was last year when we were designing our kitchen. The salesperson told us not to bother as the two sections were so small.

TheNemesisOfLame · 20/07/2022 13:17

I have a double oven under an induction hob. Had mine done about 6 years ago.
But the bigger oven is smaller than the one it replaced in a tower unit.
It was a choice I made as I also wanted a separate oven and grill.
I think mine is Neff.

Just to add that, in the end, we went for two separate ovens (but stacked in a tower). At the time I thought I’d only rarely use both ovens at the same time, but I’ve ended up making good use of both

WrinklesShminkles · 20/07/2022 13:21

Can you swap the built-in ovens for a slot-in one? I suspect that might allow the two ovens plus a hob.

WrinklesShminkles · 20/07/2022 13:22

For example:

MyCatIsNotFittingMyKitchen · 20/07/2022 13:34

@SheWoreYellow - yes, that’s exactly what I mean. Thank you so much. I will go back to Howdens and ask them about this.

Ironically, I originally wanted an eye level double oven, fridge freezer and a larder, but compromises will have to be made as it isn’t a massive kitchen!

I’m definitely not averse to eye level ovens, it’s just that our food is scattered through a mixture of upper cupboards, a lower shallow cupboard and the kitchen sides, and I’m desperate to get it all away nicely in one place. Hence my obsession with a larder.

@WrinklesShminkles - yep, that would also do nicely. Thank you for finding it.

I suppose Howdens might have meant they don’t do this in their own range, but they are usually happy for you to use your own.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 20/07/2022 13:44

The double built under ovens are tiny though. Have you checked the size of them?

Comefromaway · 20/07/2022 13:48

Yes you can, we were going to but I changed my mind last minute to a gas hob. You just have to have your worktop a bit deeper. We got a quote with Howdens to do exactly that but went with an independent company instead.

Gubu · 20/07/2022 13:56

Yes, had it done last year. I think our counter had to be a minimum of 30mm thick to ensure the clearance
