Glass or shower curtain

JustOldMe · 09/07/2022 23:47

Renovating the bathroom. I am so sick of cleaning the bl shower and glass still looking not it's best. We live in a hard water area and I am seriously thinking just ripping the glass screen and replacing it with a normal shower curtain. DH is dead against it, as 'why to renovate and then put shower curtain? Glass looks nice!' Except, that he has NEVER cleaned the bl* thing in his life.
I know, have a DH problem, not the Shower Cirtain Problem, but still-
would you put sh curtain or glass screen?

P.s., I have no idea why prt of my post is in different font. I didn't do anything and I don't know how to change it.

We have a glass screen that we all squeedgie straight after showering, its fun 😳. Whoever cleans the bathroom properly gives it a proper go over with glass cleaner every week or so

Walkden · 10/07/2022 10:48

As previous posters have mentioned get an opaque or tinted shower screen. Far more forgiving / less noticeable that it needs cleaning so you can just do it weekly with pink stuff/ bar keeper's friend/ kettle descaler or whatever

RitaFires · 10/07/2022 11:08

I'm on the side of glass screens. I find shower curtains ineffective and annoying. I also think screens look better and more expensive so if you're renovating with an eye to resale value I think a screen is the way to go.

RollOnWinter · 10/07/2022 11:10

We've got shower curtains. They can be machine washed. I bought about 6, all different patterns but the same colours.

Noodlekugel · 10/07/2022 11:29

We live in a hard water area and have a glass screen. Would never have a curtain again because they seem to come in to get you and then stick to you!

We have a water softener but just seem to have replaced the hard water deposits with salt deposits.

Did try spraying the glass with viakal, but I find I have to do it quick while wearing a mask and then run to avoid breathing it in as showers are often quite enclosed.

Now I have bought one of those battery operated sonic scrubbers (looks like a large toothbrush) and put a bit of liquid viakal on that. It has been by far the best result and it is more controlled.

SwedishEdith · 10/07/2022 12:09

Why are people still talking about shower curtains sticking to them? You get weighted ones now that don't do that at all. I got rid of our glass screen. It was one of those folding ones and the cogs were disgusting - you'd have to take it all apart to seriously clean it. So, switched to curtains as can wash them and/or spray with anti-mould spray.

SheWoreYellow · 10/07/2022 12:13

You can swear on here, no need to asterisk at all.

I feel shower curtains are a bit student-y and would get a squeedgy.

ImShrunk · 10/07/2022 12:13

Glass screen and squeegee then spray and wipe after every use. Only takes 2 minutes. I use Passion Fruit Method with good results.

Curtains are horrible - the way they cling to you if you accidently touch them makes me shudder.
Shower screen all the way for me.
As ItsDinah says, if it is frosted / opaque / patterned, then and marks or smears will be less obvious.

A shower curtain sometimes clinging to you is a much smaller problem than screens that have to be squeegeed every time you have a shower, cleaned regularly and still have water marks on them.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/07/2022 12:20

"we all squeedgie straight after showering, its fun 😳"

Extra minutes after every shower, standing there naked or with just a towel really ISN'T fun!

OliviaBond · 10/07/2022 12:31

You need a squeegee and rain repellent. Makes having glass shower doors/screens so much easier

Thank You everyone for your replies.
We have 1 teen and one older pre-teen, so method of 'just quick cleaning after every wash' will not work very well I think.
Just wanted to know what others think and now I see that it's roughly 50:50 🤯

For a new bathroom it has to be a glass screen surely - the shower curtain is old fashioned now

Crumpleton · 10/07/2022 14:18

Years ago in our first house I longed for a glass shower cubical. Hated cleaning the darn thing as you say water marks were awful.
Moved house had a curtain, hated they way it stuck to you and when washed they'd lose the waterproof protection.

Now living in a house with walk in glass showers, love them.
Shower, use a window squeegee to wipe down keeps the screens free of water marks.
For a weekly deeper clean white vinegar, drop of washing up liquid mixed with water, spray or use cloth then squeegee off.

Well, I guess that is personal preference.

That said I've managed over 40 years living as an adult without squeegee-ing the shower every time it is used. That seems very extreme to me. I don't live in a hard water area, so don't know if that makes a difference ??

This is a good point actually.
We have walk in showers with those ultra thin trays I'm not sure a shower curtain would look very good or even do a good job at keeping the water in.

Sarah1217 · 10/07/2022 18:38

Shower curtain - I grew up outside of the UK where shower curtains were the norm. We always had plastic liners like this to go behind the curtain. If you have a shower over bath keep the liner in the tub and the curtain outside of it, which will keep it from clinging to you or getting mildew on it. If the liner starts to get gross you can wipe it down or replace it.

@notagaim giving the viakal trick a go now!

How did you find it?

PigletJohn · 10/07/2022 20:44

@Noodlekugel

a water softener does not put salt into the tapwater unless it has a severe fault. Lick it to make sure.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/07/2022 21:08

"I don't live in a hard water area, so don't know if that makes a difference ??"

I live in an EXTREMELY hard water area, which I'm sure doesn't help.

I really wouldn't care about being fashionable when you compare the amount of work with glass versus a curtain.

dudsville · 10/07/2022 21:14

We had glass put in but it infuriated me it was replaced by a shower tail like the kind in hotels that bow so you have more space in the shower. I love it, i have a coat plastic curtain inside and a fabulous printed fabric on the outside. The plastic one goes in the machine about every 6 to 8 weeks.

PigletJohn · 10/07/2022 21:41

my BiL almost rebuilt his house, and consulted a company that makes glass doors for shops. They made him a glass door and sort of wall for a very nice enclosure. All tailored to fit.

it is rather heavy, though.
