Foxes in neighbour's abandoned garden

Hi all, I am hoping to find some advice on the following problem.
We live next to an empty house. The owners live somewhere near, but hardly ever show up.
The garden is a jungle, the jungle overgrows into mine, some plant with strong branches grows in between my hedge panels and I am worried it will get damaged.
For some time now I suspected foxes live there, there was so much rumbling in the evening, but today I saw two, in the afternoon? they looked young and not scared of me at all, but I am scared of them!!!
I have young child and summer is coming and now I am worried about my DC being alone in the garden for a sec. What if a group of them attacks us.
What can I do????

I meant fence panels, anyway that is less of an issue than the foxes

Lucky you! The foxes will help keeps rats away in the abandoned house next door. 😊

It's very, very rare for foxes to attack humans, but if you're worried, you could reinforce the fence between your garden and your neighbours' garden, eg with chicken wire. Cut the branches that are coming through the fence. Foxes usually prefer to keep to themselves, so unless there's something in your garden to attract them (eg chickens or food), they're unlikely to come into your garden except perhaps at night.

foxes do not attack people. They are not wolves or lions. To prevent overfamiliarity, do not attempt to feed or stroke them.

if you have a cat, it will probably chase the foxes away.

if they get mange (look for a grey or bald tail or hindquarters) the constant pain and itching can cause suffering and mental illness and erratic behaviour, ften leading to an early death. Avoid ill animals.

keep your doors closed, especially to the room where you put bowls of petfood on the floor

if you know a mature carniverous man, he can provide an organic fox repellent around your house.

🤣🤣🤣
MN never ceases to amaze.
OP get a bloody grip.

What if a group of them attacks us?

Not much you can do if you're in a foxes stomach tbf.

Soubriquet · 09/06/2022 18:29

You’re more likely to be attacked by a dog than a fox

I would love to be there. Foxes are one of my favourite animals

Weefreetiffany · 09/06/2022 18:32

Lol we have foxes in the neighbours garden and I’ve seen rats and mice and the neighbourhood cats sit on the roof and watch the foxes play on their lawns.

some people are fiercely pro fox though for reasons I can’t fathom.

op they will run away from you as soon as you get near don’t worry. Or you can call pest control?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/06/2022 18:33

Let them live. Poor things are getting displaced with all that fucking building going on everywhere.

parietal · 09/06/2022 18:34

we had foxes at the end of the garden - v cute. occasionally they would leave trash all over the place and poo on the grass. but not dangerous to you.

Jackiebrambles · 09/06/2022 18:34

Foxes lived under our garden shed last year, we saw them coming in and out beforehand but then a few months later 6 fox cubs came running out and spent weeks rough and tumbling in our garden! None of them came anywhere near us and ran away if we entered the garden. The worst thing was fox poo and also the random bits of bin food their mum got for them!

Fishandchipbutty · 09/06/2022 18:38

Foxes are timid, but may become bolder when hungry, so keep your back door shut if you leave dog or cat food bowls on your kitchen floor. Mrs fox I'm looking at you! 🦊

MintyMoocow · 09/06/2022 18:38

You are so lucky, I love to see wild animals,
They are absolutely more scared or you and your children than you are of them.
Don’t you dare hurt them!

Woolandwonder · 09/06/2022 18:41

We have Foxes in and out of our garden (and I live very urban) they are fine, even totally fine with the cats. They are so beautiful to watch. My neighbour feeds them every night and they are totally happy. Last year mum brought her baby foxes and they played on the lawn with a ball.

Cocoaone · 09/06/2022 18:44

Our house was empty with a jungle garden before we moved in. We had a massive tick issue in the summer when clearing the garden - the neighbour told us a family of foxes lived in the garden before we arrived.

The garden is cleared now and no more ticks so far this summer. The fox has only turned up once since - and jumped over the 6 foot fence to get in, so strengthening your fence might not do much!

mistletoe1 · 09/06/2022 18:45

We have foxes that sleep on our shed roof on sunny days. They have never given us any trouble (apart from overnight during mating season - the noise is dreadful) and we’ve been here 12 years.

MintJulia · 09/06/2022 18:46

How old are your dcs? I wouldn't leave a new born alone in the garden but generally, foxes won't attack humans.

If you're worried, keep something loud to hand. My ds's pop gun was perfect. or a sports whistle.

BlanketsBanned · 09/06/2022 18:46

Lucky you, I wish we had foxes in our garden. Are you in contact with the owners, do you think the wheubs near the fence panels need a cutback, is it your fence..

JustALittleHelpPlease · 09/06/2022 18:49

We have a breeding pair. Every year 2 or 3 cubs in the garden - very cute! Our cat is quite happy to chase them off when he feels he deserves the sunny spot more than they do. There is no reason to think you are less scary than an (average size) cat.

Soubriquet · 09/06/2022 18:50

Oh I’m so jealous of everyone!!!!!

try to be quieter, so you don't disturb the foxes. 😉

Dougieowner · 09/06/2022 19:04

We had them at our old house, not urban as we were right on the edge of the village with open fields beyond.
They are timid and did not come as far up the garden when our dog came along (prior to that a young cub actually tried to creep through the kitchen while I was at the sink!).
Don't mind them at all, yes the poo is not nice and unfortunately the dog loves rolling in the stuff. Generally I would say you are lucky to have nature so close.

Some people are wary of all wildlife.
When we had students living next door one of them knocked on the door late one evening saying there was a hedgehog in their garden and who did they inform to get it removed, they even checked that it wasn't our pet which had escaped! We gently explained that they are a wild animal and like to go about their way undisturbed.

Soubriquet · 09/06/2022 19:04

look at these babies

blacksax · 09/06/2022 19:05

What if a group of them attacks us.

They won't. Trust me, they won't. They are not wolves, and they don't hunt in packs. They are solitary hunters, and eat all sorts of small things, worms, beetles & other insects, and small furry creatures. Urban foxes also often raid rubbish bins outside takeaways.

Humans are not part of their normal diet.

whatsagoodusername · 09/06/2022 19:06

The wild jungle next door to us has a family of foxes living in it.

The cubs are just starting to explore. We had five of them the other evening, all playing together! Mum and dad wandering through. It entertained us all through dinner.

We usually have a fox or two napping in the sun. They get up and run any time they think we might go outside - they're very wary of us, even though we hardly ever use the garden.
