Foxes in neighbour's abandoned garden

Hi all, I am hoping to find some advice on the following problem.
We live next to an empty house. The owners live somewhere near, but hardly ever show up.
The garden is a jungle, the jungle overgrows into mine, some plant with strong branches grows in between my hedge panels and I am worried it will get damaged.
For some time now I suspected foxes live there, there was so much rumbling in the evening, but today I saw two, in the afternoon? they looked young and not scared of me at all, but I am scared of them!!!
I have young child and summer is coming and now I am worried about my DC being alone in the garden for a sec. What if a group of them attacks us.
What can I do????

But we get foxes in our garden too, they do love a creative poo, on a football, in the palm of a gardening glove etc etc

It makes me sad that people in the Uk are so uneducated about wildlife 🙁

Me too.

Hereforthenthtime · 10/06/2022 19:35

We had one that used to come into our garden it just leapt around a bit and slept, it did seem to keep the pesky digging squirrels out though.

LuluBlakey1 · 10/06/2022 19:38

My cousin has foxes that live in his garden and have for years. They have babies every year and play with footballs, sunbathe and are no bother at all. You are being ridiculous. Re-inforce your fence if you are bothered.

because it's true.

It is true, there is a conviction based on it recently. Are people really this clueless about what goes on?

Cervinia · 11/06/2022 19:28

We have them and I never knew until a year ago when I heard their calls. Then as I pottered around really early in the morning I kept seeing one.

I bought a wildlife camera and they come every night. This was taken about 5am yesterday. They come and go through the garden all night long interspersed with visits from neighbouring cats.

The best visit on the same night though was a badger.

foxes won’t attack they are very nervous and our foxes are terrified of my cats. I’ve watched them dance around a very bored moggy sat on the lawn.

You've got a badger! 😍😍😍

That is lovely @Cervinia. I have foxes and badgers in my garden too and have thought about a wildlife camera. I rarely see the badgers but we have surprised each other a couple of times. And I hear them in the bushes, scuffling around.

What is in the bowl, it is water? I leave water out all the time now and would love to know who drinks it (aside from my cats!)

Cervinia · 12/06/2022 04:54

Yes @DorritLittle it is just water, although I do leave plain peanuts for the badger on the path but the foxes usually hoover them up first. I also leave a raw egg out for the fox sometimes which they love.

The camera was a gift but I think it was about 40.00 from Amazon, I would recommend using rechargeable batteries though as it eats power. these clips are from a video but I couldn’t get that to upload. I love checking it in a morning.

Do all you with badgers in the garden live rurally? I'm very Envy

DorritLittle · 12/06/2022 13:53

@Johnnysgirl sort of, I live on the edge of a city next to a wood so it's a bit of both. My neighbour tries to stop the badgers coming in but I love knowing they are there.

@Cervinia, I will try the occasional nuts! Still question but do you break the raw egg or just leave it?! Thanks for the camera advice. Will look into that.

Foxes are shy and sweet. They will not attack you. What they will do us keep the rats and mice down.

I love foxes. If it were me I would feed them.

No, I just leave it whole and raw. The fox takes it in their mouth then tends to move somewhere quieter and breaks the shell, licks the inside out then eats the shell!

it’s fascinating 😀

Absolutely not, I live in suburbia, next to a school field but all the gardens around it on four sides have thick shrubs and trees and hedges.

Cellophane, my garden vixen leaned in through the e open door and snaffled one of my rubber Birkenstocks this morning. She dropped it , luckily, when I bustled up. She often comes very close, in the hope that I have a spare sausage or chicken breast about my person…

DorritLittle · 12/06/2022 17:22

Thanks Cervinia I will try that!

They love a shoe don't they?! Oddly, the day I posted my fox had been gone for months, I spotted one that night. So it's back to inspecting the garden every night again, to clear it of all fox treasure 😂

Not much you can do if you're in a foxes stomach tbf.

I am actually crying with laughter at this comment 😂😂

DorritLittle · 14/06/2022 15:00

Put an egg out last night; demolished shell left this morning... Briefly saw a baby last night, after lots of rustling!

Mumsnut · 14/06/2022 15:41

Played Badminton yesterday - or tried to. Vixen kept stealing the shuttlecock. She would drop it if asked nicely.

I think she is turning into a dog.

liveforsummer · 14/06/2022 15:49

We are absolutely surrounded by foxes who have little frear. One even gets hand fed by some of the gardeners in the neighbouring allotment. They aren't afraid as they are well used to being on the proximity of humans. Can't say Ive ever had the slightest concern about dc playing out due to them. One of my colleagues has a video of the ines at the end of his garden bouncing on DC's trampoline (not at the same time as dc)

blacksax · 09/06/2022 19:05

They won't. Trust me, they won't. They are not wolves, and they don't hunt in packs. They are solitary hunters, and eat all sorts of small things, worms, beetles & other insects, and small furry creatures. Urban foxes also often raid rubbish bins outside takeaways.

Humans are not part of their normal diet.

One crossed the road in front of us the other day carrying a pack of toilet roll. 🤔😆

motogirl · 14/06/2022 15:56

Foxes are beautiful animals. I've had them in my garden for over 20 years without incident. They do not approach people

Loobyloo68 · 14/06/2022 16:55

Here's my fox, I've got 2 dogs and a cat and he still sunbathe in the middle of the lawn in broad daylight 😁
