Would you buy house without a bath?

We’re planning a bathroom renovation for a house we’re buying. House has a small toilet / shower room on ground floor (which we will eventually turn into toilet only), and a bathroom (separate toilet / bath room) on first floor. Long term plan is to convert loft and have a big bathroom there. For day one, we will only renovate the bathroom on the first floor. I think it’s too small for a separate bath & walk in shower so I’m planning on ditching the bath and just having shower. My concern is making the house unsellable, we don’t plan on ever selling but who knows what the future holds, eh?

would the lack of a bath put you off buying a house?

I have a condition that is exacerbated by hot baths so for me a shower, even without the condition i would always prefer a shower anyway, same for DH

Rainyjubilee · 04/06/2022 09:19

Yes totally if space to fit one, otherwise no.

hugoagogo · 04/06/2022 09:19

No, I have rented with just a shower, but buying- I would need to have one.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/06/2022 09:20

No, would put me off.

Beamur · 04/06/2022 09:20

I'm about to take out the only bath in my house and replace with a big shower. There will be space to put one back in for a potential purchaser. But it will suit us better not to have a shower over the bath.

Arnaquer · 04/06/2022 09:21

When I replace my bathroom I'm planning on taking the bath out and having a walk in shower. We haven't used out bath in years and I hate clambering into the bath to get to the shower

Timide · 04/06/2022 09:22

Use our shower every day and would not even have a bath. Definitely not a deal breaker for me

EdithStourton · 04/06/2022 09:23

I would consider a house with no bath so long as there was space for one and the price reflected the cost and hassle of fitting one.

Blueskythinking123 · 04/06/2022 09:23

I'm about to take my bath out and have a large walk in shower. Future buyers can add a bath if they wish, floor plan is the same with or without the bath.

I'm personally thinking of what suits us best as a family now and gives us more space in our bathroom.

comfortablyfrumpy · 04/06/2022 09:24

Could you not just put in a "P" bath - with a shower over it? Like this

Personally, no I wouldn't buy one without a bath if at all possible

statetrooperstacey · 04/06/2022 09:24

It wouldn’t put me off, we’re thinking about taking our bath out, by the time we wanted to sell and move again bathroom would need redoing anyway . I think there are enough people that would be ok with it op. You can get collapsible baths that fit in showers cubicles for little kids.

Redglitter · 04/06/2022 09:25

I'd love to have just a shower and no bath. I hate baths. Not having one in the bathroom would be a definite selling point for me

StarTwins · 04/06/2022 09:25

I would definitely not buy a house without a bath.

Namechangingasouting · 04/06/2022 09:26

If the bathroom was dated and I'd replace it soon anyway then it wouldn't matter. If it was an otherwise new / nice bathroom then I'd see it as money we didn't need to spend so it'd put me off.
If you're planning to be in this house for the long haul, I'd make it the way you want it. We've decorated in the style we like ~ not everyone would like our 'loud' tiles but I'm not worrying about selling it when we hope to stay here.

MargosKaftan · 04/06/2022 09:26

No I wouldn't. However, if I was buying a house with say, a 20+ year old bathroom, I'd assume I'd have to rip that out anyway and put in the bathroom I'd want. So if this is possibly a "forever" house, dont redo the bathroom for a future buyer, if the chances are it will be so long since you put the bathroom in, they'll rip it out anyway.

Why have something that doesn't suit you for several decades, just to possibly put a couple of grand onto the final sale price?

BringOnSummerHolidays · 04/06/2022 09:26

Yes. I don’t bath and only ever use it as a shower. Youngest is now 7 and can be trained to use a shower. I won’t with a baby but most people don’t have babies or toddlers.

LadyEloise1 · 04/06/2022 09:18

Would you consider putting in a bath with a curved end at the tap end. Then put the shower part above the taps. It makes having a shower in the bath more comfortable as it is a little more spacious.
I'm sorry I can't do links. Perhaps a kind poster would do one for me please.

We usually shower in our house but when the dc were younger we used the bath for them. Sometimes you just need a bath - muscle ache etc.

P shaped baths take so much more water to fill if you're using it as a bath. Planning on scrapping the p shaped bath and getting a decent sized walk in shower instead.

Myworhl · 04/06/2022 09:26

No. Needs vary too much to make do.

blibblibs · 04/06/2022 09:27

If it was a choice between a bath or an equivalent sized shower I'd take the shower every time.
And I'd also much rather have a walk-in shower than one over the bath, I hate having to climb in a bath to shower.
We currently have both and the bath hasn't been used for years, it's just another thing that needs cleaning.

ohmygloshes · 04/06/2022 09:27

100% no. I absolutely love a bath and reject houses where the en-suite doesn't have a bath. Its just my preference.

brookstar · 04/06/2022 09:27

Yes it would put me off.
I think it would also put people with young families off too.

JonBonJovisHair · 04/06/2022 09:28

We actually bought a house without a bath and we have a second home that we’ve removed them and replaced with showers.

GOODCAT · 04/06/2022 09:28

We bought a house with just a walk in shower. We have redone the bathroom and it still only has a shower. I wouldn't choose to have a bath, but I appreciate it would put off families with young kids when we come to sell. There isn't really room for a bath either.

TitInATrance · 04/06/2022 09:28

Yes, I wouldn’t buy a house without a bath. I’d be more amenable to one without a shower, as I’ve had several houses with showers over the bath.

In your place I’d still do what suits you if you’re planning to stay indefinitely.

hellcatspanglelalala · 04/06/2022 09:29

No. Ours doesn't get used all the time but I love a nice hot bath after a walk in the winter.
