So yesterday was eventful... Walked back from the school run and the builder was stuck between his van and the skip (his van had rolled back) I had to quickly get a brick from the skip and put it behind the back wheels and jump in his van to pull the handbrake up as high as I could!! I'm basically one of the team now and feel like we bonded 🤣 he's getting his handbrake fixed. Good job I came back else I would have a squished builder.

Eeeek! Hopefully you've stored up some goodwill for the future! Glad the builder is safe though- that could have all gone a bit wrong.

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 10:53

@NewHouseNewMe @AwkwardPaws27 sliding doors sound a great solution or how about a fixed panel with a deflector hinge? We are going all sliding doors as I prefer the look even though we have the space for normal doors - ours are built into custom niches similar to awkward.

Lovely bathroom too!

@AwkwardPaws27 so pleased to see a pic of this mirror in a real bathroom, we’re looking at the same for our en suite. It looks lovely.
I have just realised today I’ve not allowed for the soil pipe in the dimensions of our en suite, so may need to reduce down either our shower enclosure or width of sink vanity.
We’re now in week 5 and roof structure is on, tiling hopefully next week with bricklayer on-site tomorrow. We’re seeing real progress but am struggling with the lack of proper kitchen, kids are begging for proper home cooked meals. 🙈
I need to start thinking about ordering en suite, radiators etc but don’t want to do too soon with no storage but acutely aware of the delays in deliveries, etc.

All this little niggles that happen as you start building! If only plans went according to plan! 😂

I've bitten the bullet and ordered stuff - the builders will just have to work around it as I can't face having to either delay the schedule or source alternatives or potentially pay more for the same item! I'm trying where possible to ask the boss builder for approximate timings but with some shops you can't select a delivery date.

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 10:44

@AwkwardPaws27 I guess it depends on how tall you are! Do you have a bathtub now? Could you stick a cardboard box or something at the bottom to try and visualise/test out a 1500mm size?

We need to switch the whole layout - current bath is a big corner thing taking up nearly half the room. I want to move the toilet into the bathroom (as currently people walk out and use the kitchen sink in front of them rather than turning right & using the bathroom, plus I need the current toilet space for the washing machine!).

Terrible floorplan attached.

I don't think a pocket door would work as it would a) cost more and b) presumably make the wall thicker and the narrow space even narrower. The door opening outwards would only block access to the washing machine/ laundry cupboard.

We are progressing nicely. They are working all weekend to get the extension plastered ready for the kitchen on Tuesday. 1st fix is done. Boarding up of the upstairs happening at the moment too. Once the kitchen fitters are in they will start at the top and work there way down the house. Utility also being fitted next week.

I have a pinched nerve in my back and I'm in agony. So much for my plan to start painting next week😩

We did go back to the bank and have some more cash to finish off the house and outside completely which is a relief. Probably need to pay a decorator nowWink

Finally feels like we are on the home straight!

Fantastic news! How long are you having to wait for the plaster to dry? Have you chosen all the paint colours?
Ooof that sounds painful. Hoping it eases soon for you

I don't want to pack anymore ☹️☹️☹️ storage lorry arrives tomorrow pm. I'm actually looking forward to the boxes being gone and living out of a suitcase. I just feel like we've been packing and clearing out for weeks!

Did you manage to get all packed up and moved?

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:01

Yellownotblue · 09/05/2022 20:52

Hello dusty ladies <waves>

We’re now in week 14 of our build and slightly ahead of schedule. I went to the Grand Designs live show last week and had good chats with kitchen companies (and also eliminated some that seemed a bit rubbish). Unfortunately I also picked up an unwanted gift - Covid 🤬. So I’m going to spend the next couple of days in bed, looking at kitchen brochures. We really need to get started with our joinery plans. The quotes I have so far are crazy expensive.

Have you got lots of custom joinery? What are you wanting to get done?

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:03

LivingInaBuildingSite · 09/05/2022 22:05

Power to the summerhouse at the end of the garden worked on today.
not really sure what else.

I gave the plumber my choice of toilet, hope it’s the right one!

Boiler serviced, not exactly building work but he comes once a year so it’s good to see his reaction to progress.

tomorrow after work is a big sit down with the boss to discuss what’s left.
plus meet with the kitchen guy to start on the utility.

What toilet did you go for in the end?!! You must share!
Do you think you'll get finished for the school holidays?

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:03

NewHouseNewMe · 10/05/2022 21:36

We thought the same! Hated all the furniture - indoor or out.. We would have seen more to our liking in John Lewis!

Does anyone have a bathroom supplier for the full suite that won’t break the bank? I’m now buying the last bathroom and need to economise! It can’t be stone or cast iron as the floor won’t take it.

Have you had a look at Sanctuary bathrooms?

AwkwardPaws27 · 18/05/2022 11:04

I figure:

  • I can't lie down in current bath anyway (1400 long but very wide at one end), I have my knees bent or legs up the wall 😄
  • small child(ren) will fit fine
  • dog will also fit fine
So 1500 is probably the way to go! I can leave the door as it is then too.
BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:06

NewHouseNewMe · 15/05/2022 08:54

How has everyone’s week been? We are making visible progress with the stairs in, roof continuing to be tiled (the house is mostly roof!) and extension roof fully formed. Bar studding the walls internally upstairs, the structural stuff is done.

Now the wait for big stuff begins - kitchens, crittal doors, windows - and a long marathon of 1st/2nd fixes, plastering and redecorating.

Think we're around the same stage. Now comes lots of decisions and ordering and sticking to the spreadsheet budget!!! 😂

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:10

Ah I see @AwkwardPaws27 . If you did change your mind to go for a standard bath, I think the door opening outwards is a great solution.

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:16

Remind me when you started @NewHouseNewMe ? You and @Sewfrickinamazeballs are on week 18?

Newhome321 · 18/05/2022 11:32

We went with Eclisse pocket door for bathroom(glass, standard) and living room(huge, parrallel system so when it opens it is an open plan living room. The system and the door was delivered from Italy and for living room one if took 7 weeks and it was damaged when arrived so we are now waiting for the replacement. I am back to the office 5/7 and do long hours so isnt home everyday until 8pm.

Bathroom tiles were delivered yesterday but was wrong stuffs(should have been matt for the floor and different blue to what we ordered).

Nothing has gone smoothly at all with this renovation since day 1.

Bigger problem, the builder said the “forgot” to include the porch in the quote/contract and then said they think its oversized and need full planning permission despite me asking for 5 months waiting for the project to start that if we need the full planning permission for either the porch or the loft.(the loft is ok, within permitted planning development).

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 11:51

@Newhome321 that sounds stressful. Can you reduce the porch so it's within permitted development? Or i guess you could start building and then go through retrospective planning?
Could you source the doors from a UK supplier?

Newhome321 · 18/05/2022 12:18

We have already ordered and paid according to the architecture plan measurement for the door and the side window so scale it down will see forgone of minimum £3.5k side window which us bespoke.

The particular parallel pocket door system that we want is only available from Italy however Eclisse has been very good in terms of customer support communication. They told us that they are prioritising the replacement.

Week 19 for us. Hopefully just 4 left now.

Kitchen being fitted this week. Builder has put in a pvc flexi hose as the ducking for the hood. Not majorly happy and hoping it won't be too noisy/cause drag but I'm at the point where I just need it done now (plus, not one to use if that often anyway). DH is the type of person never to make a fuss so will literally live with what we get, whereas I want things the way I want them (and have told them over and over). Just means I'm the one finding faults or things to change. Today's example. DH is tall, 198cm tall to be exact. The shower head has been put about this height so he won't fit under it. Instead of asking the plumber to move it higher before the tiler starts Monday, he would prefer to live with this annoyance (and make the odd complaint about it) just so as not to make a fuss. I don't get it.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 18/05/2022 12:25

@BlueMooMoo

Plaster isn't dry but that's not stopping them. You can drill in the day after apparently. All the floor units are being done first, and it's almost dry anyway now.

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 12:33

@Newhome321 hopefully it sails through planning then

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 12:40

@Sewfrickinamazeballs totally understand. My husband is the same! And in fact thanks for the timely reminder to make sure our plumbers do the same 😀

Week 19! You really are on the home straight.
As much as I've loved bringing it all together I'll always be glad to get my evenings and break times back from researching shower wastes etc.!
Are you set on all your decor or are you doing the main bits and then decide on decor as you go?

Thanks. Yes, get that shower head height right!

Decor - I have a clear plan for the downstairs loo (art neaveau mural, gold ceiling, dark walls), kitchen (and hallway/landing) will be F&B Wevet (but colour matched as I don't have a money tree) with one wall being a dark green colour (TBC). Main bathroom, navy blue walls, teal and white tiles) everywhere else I haven't thought about yet. That's the bit I'm going to enjoy doing so don't want to rush it. I'm happy to live with plastered walls for a few weeks whilst I figure that out.

We made it to the bnb on Monday so apologies for not keeping up here. Sorry if I miss anyone as I round up.

It's all systems go at home. Electrics and plumbing being started. Ufh going in. Stud walls mostly up. Half the windows are in. Lighting and sockets design completed. Pretty much mostly to spec - when we get back home on Monday I need to make a record of the changes. I've added an LED strip but think have less downlighters so hoping the price will work out overall.

Been working through tile and bathroom quotes and am pretty happy with what I've chosen now. Have had to make some compromises as ever :) but budget broadly on track.

What LED strips are you going for? I've got loads going in our house. I'm about to pull the trigger on my order (50m + 10 drivers). I found it so complicated but my electrician is amazing and helped me work out what I needed.

OP posts:
Sewfrickinamazeballs · 18/05/2022 12:58

@BlueMooMoo and good job keeping to budget. I think we are pretty close to (within £3k) of our original budget which I'm pleased with. Total spend likely to be around £330k Confused makes me sick thinking about it.....then I look at my kitchen and the view from the room and that feeling somehow melts awaySmile

OP posts:
BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 13:18

@Sewfrickinamazeballs I don't know many details but it is warm white that will run the length of the stair skirting. I showed the electrician what I wanted and he will order and do it I hope!
50m sounds loads! Are you having it in lots of room or is it mainly the main family room?

BlueMooMoo · 18/05/2022 13:25

Also @Sewfrickinamazeballs snap on the gold loo!
I do need to wait for the update on the electrics but everything else so far is mainly on track. Think we are 2k over.

Amazing job 👏 less than 1% over - that is pretty incredible.

I'm still hoping we can come under 300. Awww, I'm glad you are feeling it is worth it. As you say feeling at home is priceless.
I'm happy with everything so far just slightly gutted about the tightness of the sofa/dining table area but some things have worked out even better - we have a double height hallway (sacrificing an upstairs walk in linen closet) but it's so worth it.
